So, how often do you cut yourself?

The last time I cut myself was with a knife right after sharpening it... it didn't bleed... it just sliced off that outter layer of skin. It's what I get for feeling my edge while walking LOL. Other than that... I usually find that sharp pieces of would usually dig into me more than my knives.

See, I don't get this. Dull knives are supposed to be dangerous.

Not so much...but today! Just after breakfast, about to leave the house&making up a lunch-box to take with me, slicing tomatoes and at the same time gaping out of the window at a squirrel up a tree and a fit looking blonde walking by...Opinel No.8 slices right into my thumb, fair bit of blood too......

We were discussing this at the Michigan get together. I was telling kgd that I haven't cut myself in close to a year. I was breaking in the pivot on my Centofante III and clipped the inside of my pinky finger. :o Bled like a stuck pig but not bad enough to need stitches.

I guess I'm not doing enough cutting either.

Burns are another story.:p From melted paracord ends to minor kitchen accidents to messing around by the fire pit. I'm a 1st degree burn magnet. I can't even microwave a frozen burrito without burning the roof of my mouth.

I would divide cuts into two categories: little nicks that just bleed a small amount and the oh-crap-what-have-I-done whoppers. The former I get every week or so, the latter, at worst, once a year.

Nicks come more often than I would like. Usually while examining a blade:

Me: this is a nice...ow dammit

Other person: what happened

Me: while clenching my hand around the new cut...nothing

Big cuts are a lot less frequent. I have had a few that bleed for seemingly hours and probably could have had stitches.

Every time I get a new knife( it's not yours until you do this) or when I do fine work with a small blade.

i nick a shave my skin once a week and my worst cut was with a axe and i cut an artirie on the inside of my foot. It bled realy bad but i used duct tape and tissue to close it up. I knew i needed stiches but i was som damned embaressed about im suprised im sharing this accident. But i got stiches later that day.

Thankfully, my accidents are getting fewer and farther between. I haven't given myself a serious cut since a disastrous incident involving a red onion, a newly-sharpened hollow grind, and my finger several summers ago. That one left a chevron-shaped scar on my index finger, and really ought to have received stitches.

Does hair count? Because everyone knows that the mark of a knife knut is the absence of patches of arm hair.

All the best,

- Mike

Nearly exact same thing happened to me. I gave my old Kershaw Leek to my neighbor/friend and was showing him how to open it with the flipper and the thumbstud. The action was real smooth on that knife as I'd carried it for at least 3 years, and I primarily used the flipper since the blade and thumbstud were so small. He asked me if I cut myself often and I said "nah," two seconds later I pushed on the thumbstud too hard and ended up slicing my thumb when it opened. Other than that I rarely cut myself, but that might be because I'm not using my knives as often as I should be.... :o

Maybe once every 3 weeks... always a very small cut by a small knife. A good portion of the time it happens during either food preparation or the sharpening process.

the last time i got a really bad cut was a few years ago..

i was starting to dabble in knife make, and made a sweet knife out a of a sturdy drywall saw blade. i cordwrapped the handle and rubbed some silicone goup into the cord. some time later i decided to remove the cordwrap for some reason...and as i was taking the cordwrap off, the knife blade twisted up into the base of my pinky, cutting deep and fast. so deep, i got blood on the blade!

that deserved stitches, but i waited too long before i went to the emergency room, so i just got it pulled open, washed out, and got a nice dressing on top.

the most painful cut i think i've ever had was the other day...a really deep paper cut.

i get all kinds of scrapes and minor burns and dings almost on a daily basis, but i don't usually count those as much of anything.

Almost daily..but seldom with a knife. Work related nicks and scratches, and the occasional smashed appendage..or zinged digit with power tool. I got lucky last time and stuck my thumb against the side of my skill saws blade..just got a friction burn..what a rush though! :D I have even lost the tip of my nose to a rasp once! Man, you wanna talk about blood!, and I got laughed at for about a week or so...that sucked.;)
