Or is it a shank? I'm not sure which is correct...

But regardless, it is probably the pokiest thing I've ever attempted. I had Bos do the HT. Not because he is really good at keeping stuff clean and straight and everything, and because everything I touch always gets a kink in it somewhere. No, no. It was because it won't fit in my puny oven. Really.

I think I'll finish the finish in the tumbler with corn cob. That will (I think) give it a nice non directional bright shiny satin finish. It is at 1200 grit right now, but I got some of this 2000 grit "black ice" from Tracy that I think I'll try first. But ultimately I think a non directional finish will be the way to go due to a few strange intersections that currently look a little weird. I can't exactly take it apart to finish individual pieces.

The purpose of this post is, eh,,, nothing actually. I just haven't started a thread in a while and I felt like it...

I'll post pictures when I get scales on it. Probably in 2011.

...that is all...

If you are not close enough to stab someone with it you can just bounce the sun off it and blind them. Very nice looking.

Thanks.

I started the stupid thing about a year ago but got busy doing jobs that pay.

Truth be told, it is probably above my skill level, but so far it is has turned out pretty much flawless. Doing the hand finishing well took a lot of time. I never used my knife grinder at all. I took it from the mill to EDM stones that David helped me out with. It was a interesting process. The next bit is where I attempt to make scales, perhaps from mammoth tooth.

I'd video tape it for you folk's amusement, but I suspect the language would get a little too salty.

:thumbup:As a knifemaker and a machinist I say that piece is absolutely awesome. The EDM stone process is tedious. Again, that is truly amazing.

Nathan, it is a true beauty. Excellent shiv. I love it and have a piece of D2 1x2 12 long and guess what I have planned for it. Probably take me more than a year and won't be as perfect as yours, but, I am going to give it a shot.

I always loved daggers. They are completely useless in my daily life other than they give me something to look at and admire. But hey, sometimes that's enough.

I keep collecting them and admiring them all the same. :)

I officially deem it a "shiv."

OK that there is funny. :D

Nathan that's an awesome integral dagger/shiv/shank/toadsticker. Regarding hand finishing, I have the same problem with an integral I'm working on. Every place there's an intersection of planes I can't figure out which way I should be moving the sandpaper. I like your tumbled finish idea; just make sure that thing doesn't poke through the tumbler! You'll get corncob all over the place. :D

Nathan that thing is insane.....Its such a cool design, I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it. What handle material?

BTW any "celly" would love to have that "shiv", it would help in cutting the oranges for makin pruno.

I'm impressed Nathan. That is beautiful and so far above my skill level it isn't funny. Good luck with the rest of it (Mammoth tooth sounds like pure masochism on top of the rest, but good luck if you go for it).

Heh heh. The esteemed Mr. DeShivs has spoken. It is officially a "shiv". Heh.

The material is CPM154. And that stuff wears out cutters just as fast as D2. Polishes nice though. Jim, when you take your stab at it, I'd suggest you don't skimp on the cutters or the machining. An hour on the mill is worth probably a day on the bench with those little stones. My fingers cramp just thinking about it.

Jason, you could probably teach me a thing or two about using those stones. I think I took a lot longer than I should have.
