So if the end of the world came...

Id have ...

Waist : 10 packs of pepper spray along belt/ 5 cans tear gas / 1 busse machete

Back : Coldsteel whip thing, and a medium cold steel katana

Chest : bullet proof vest / upside down ka bar

A sling shot and a bag of marbles.

And 2 grenades.

so for blades, ive got a kabar on chest. Busse machete on waist and a cold steel medium katana on back.

But the pepepr spray would be first. Blind em all and then run or stab the blind people.

I am not sure why so many think they would have to be out on the move, I know I would bunker up and band together with my family and others in my community that were like-minded. I simply don't see why I would willingly leave a lifetime supply of ammo behind me just to try to scrap out a living with a knife. On the move you become a target and are limited to what you can carry with you. A community care take care of it's members, has enough people to keep watches and area patrols, can garden and share chores. They can set and man the necessary OP/LPs and protect their base of operations.

Might be easier out in pretty rural environments with a low population density. Not so promising for urban/suburban peeps.

Bunkering might work in certain situations but it depends on the intelligence of your adversary, i'd think. Let's say it's not mindless zombies but roving bandits. Who like to light things on fire. Things like storehouses of ammo. Perhaps if you had a spacious strongly walled settlement it would work....you could be self sufficient, impervious to siege tactics, reasonably defendable, and have enough space within so that no one can burn down your above ground storehouses from outside your wall (molotov cocktails, flaming arrows, etc) or otherwise mess with underground stores (use grenades to impair if not completely block entrances?). But if it's a simple small farm or ranch-house, I think it'd be hard. Especially if the catastrophe was sudden and there really was no time to fortify sufficiently before craziness broke out. i don't know. that's my thinking anyway. what the hell do i know, i use a computer at work, drink water from the tap, and eat pre-packaged meat :p:D;)

I am not talking a warehouse of ammo, I am talking about enough for personal use. In the scenario you state I am assuming that everything has broken down in which case You do have some time to prepare a fortified position. Barbed wired can be either liberated from closed stores or simply taken down from existing fences. The area around a city block can quickly be burned and razed to provide a good kill zone. Don't really need all those dollar stores after they have been stripped bare anyways. Sandbags can be filled and positions for defense created. Beats the hell out of trying to hide behind a log after to trip an ambush while trekking around. If there is a bank on the block you even have secure storage against fire and such. You are always better defending a set and prepared position than having to try to defend a a hasty fighting hole.

hmmm...good points and interesting ideas (esp. your point about the bank as a storage depot, vey interesting concept!), but I don't think I'm convinced yet that defending a set position is always better than being on the move. This discussion is prone to a whole bunch of assumptions anyway since we didn't set up any at the outset, and I think one's strategy is always dictated by one's circumstances. This is an interesting topic though, and i'd like to start a new thread in the survival forum (i think it's a better location for this kind of more in depth discussion) so we can get more opinions in; can you contribute there Absintheur (and any others of course :D)?

It wouldn't be hard to make a spear out of something like this if you had a dremel tool:

You could use a belt sander to put edges on the spear, once completed, or you could just use the sharpening attachment for the dremel tool. Total cost: about 15 bucks from Home Depot if you already have the dremel tool and/ or belt sander, or know someone who can do the work for you. In fact, I think I'll make this my next project. Home Depot, here I come!:D

Hmmm
Well made machete on belt
Shotgun with LOTS of ammo (we decided there are zombies right?)
RC-6 on belt
two katanas on my back, ninja turtles style
A crate full of those pocket sized bottles of whisky (get drunk and go zombie hunting...well it is the end of the world, might aswell have fun)
A humvee, out fitted with 50. cal machine gun, those massive lights and loud speakers to play zombie killin' mix while cruisin looking for our undead pals
Armed friends to get drunk and go zombie hunting with
hand grenades
a bunker to store it all in
aluminum baseball bat---*EDIT*---i want the bat with spikes posted above
and an ipod with zombie killin' mix (ACDC-back in black, thunderstruck ect)

done. man this end of the world thing sounds like a hell of alot of fun. Also many duplicates and 4 more of those special humvees so i can find and arm people untill i have a small, convoy of armed people in humvees

For a non-firearms setup:

--One of my many recurve bows, probably the 56# Herters Sitka Perfection as it's short and powerful, with my large leather quiver stuffed to the brim with broadheads.

--Condor Combat Machete

--My teak-shafted Viking hewing spear

--Azon chainmesh vest

--Lots of distance between me and any agressors.

Honestly I'd try to stock up on as much as I could and just get the hell out. Being in Maine I could always head north (away from the heavily populated regions) and hole up in the woods. Lots of tasty animals up north, and not a whole lot of people. :D
