So since BM uses the Spyderhole.......

On the "agreement", probably best to let it drop. elevate to a higher plain.

To my knowledge, Benchmade has never offered to share their Axis patent.

A requirement of the Axis lock patent is that it has dual liners. Blade thickness + liner thickness, + scale material + lock release button makes it difficult to make very thin.

This was supposed to be a light-hearted thread and it was not my intention to bring up bad blood on the Spyderhole. Just wishing out loud really...

Hope everybody has a good new year.

Having a BB lock D'Allara and several Axis lock knives. I have to say the Axis is by and far easier to operate. BUT, I believe that the BB lock is much stronger by nature of the physics. Im torn between the two but I feel the Axis is a slightly more efficient design. The D'Allara is a bit of a pocket hog. The blades pivot is off center so to speak compared to other knives of the same size but different lock. It has to because of the relatively large ball bearing and spring sitting in the spine, preventing it from closing on a regular oriented pivot.

My personal wish is that BM would beef up the Axis lock further by putting a radius on the inner valley of the barbell design. As it stands its a sharp 90*. That puts alot of strain on a small area. Its my thought that if it were to fail it would snap the ends of the barbell off, the part that sticks out and you move with your fingers.. At the "crotch" of the angle so to speak. Radius the angle and it will spread the stress out. Much like how Spyderco does with the locks now.

I said crotch... lols.

Sorry Sal, but it was something I felt needed to be said once.

The matter is now dismissed from my mind, along with that other company.

I like the looks of the 705 & 707, haven't tried them. So they are thinner than the Grip, Presidio?

Yes, the width when closed is the reason I sold my D`allara and never bought a poliwog. Those are brilliant knives, but if they can't fit comfortably in my pocket, they're not going to be useful to me. That said, the Phoenix looks like it closes at a normal width and will be much more practical (and beautiful).

I love my Benchmades but when I need to slice something efficiently and well I reach for one of my Spydies. If you would have told me that a slipjoint (UKPK) would become my favorite knife a year ago I would have laughed at you. Keep up the good work, life is much more enjoyable with a nice range of choices.

I love my Griptilian with the Axis lock and hole as much as I love any of my Spydies. Look, say what you want, but it is a darn good knife. I love Spyderco, and I carry my Native happily, but a good knife is a good knife.

Spyderco may be my first choice and my favorite, but it isn't going to be my only choice. Especially not with so much cool stuff and nice people (Chad Los Banos comes immediately to mind) around.

With all that said, I have also said several times that Spydie+Axis would be a dream come true for me...

The 707 (and I assume the 705 as well) is a nice slim knife in every regard and I really enjoy carrying mine. If you're really looking for thin, the 530 is also very slim, though I'm not a fan of the spearpoint blade.

Both companies make great stuff, but I must say there is something very utilitarian about a Spyderco and I find myself using them more often. As Artfully Martial mentioned, the one downside to the Spyderhole is the inherent width of the knife when closed.

+1 on the Griptilian

I fell in love with the SpyderHole, but when I found out I could have an axis-lock, modified sheepsfoot blade and the thumbhole design on an American knife as well, I bought two of these.

I am a die-hard Spydie-fan and I still have my UKPK in the rotation because it is the best slicer I own, but for now, the 555HG gets the most pocket time.
If I could have it my way, I would have an American Spyderco with axis-lock, H1 steel, and a modified sheepsfoot blade, so basically an H1 Salt 1, made in Golden, with an axis-lock. That would be the last folder I would need to buy

I would buy more spydercos if they had Axis type locks. I had a D'Allara and didn't like the ball. It almost hurt in a way, you know, like your feet do walking on river rock.
I love Benchmade's lock, and love Spyderco's knives, the marriage of those two would be awesome.
The Griptilian is a good knife, but a Caly 3 or Delica/Endura what not would be even better than that with an Axis lock.
