So the Strider Warranty...

Okay, if I understand it correctly, I can do anything i want to the knife and it gets fixed no questions asked. Is that true? Can I get it completely scratched up and send it in once a year (I don't mind paying a little to get it cleaned up)? I might consider buying that RCC if I don't have to be even a little afraid of bruising it. It would honor my Blue Bump's memory because dropping the RCC wouldn't matter, I'd just have it cleaned up in a year anyway.

how i understand it is they will fix it or replace it if you break it. refinishing will cost money and take time, a long time. looks like sharpening is free. strider likes his knives to be used. i heard a story at plaza cutlery: while at a show a customer approached mick strider to show off his mint knife. mick took the knife, looked at its pristine condition, proceded to chop at a metal usher pole, and handed the knife back. that is how your knife should look!

for more warranty details check the strider site faqs, there are warranty explanations there.

They will fix or replace it for free if it´s damaged. If they see itßs done intentionally (e.g. vise marks on the snapped blade) they´ll only exchange it once.

They will charge you for cosmetics, though.

i'm afraid if mick did that to my knife he would be giving me another one thats not cool at all & he would have to replace it no ifs/ands/buts.

one of the guys at plaza cutlery told me that story. i dont think i would be happy either.

I've encountered Mick before (online) and he wasn't the kindest of souls. Fortunately, I was an onlooker.

How much, roughly, does it charge to take up cosmetics? I'd love to beat the hell out of this knife and get it pretty again once a year.

according to his site, at least 100.00. seems like a lot to refinish a blade when the finish rubs off fairly easily. may be their way of avoiding the issue.

never met mick strider, but talked to some of his guys at the plaza booth. they were all very nice and answered questions, even goofy ones. i dont think mick was there. i have heard he can be blunt and a bit aloof, but again that is second hand info.

Pshh, a hundred? Why, I should just buy a new gravitator everytime mine (the one I'll buy instead of the Strider) gets dinged up then. I get two free just for the price differential alone on the cheapester strider folder.

yeah, you could do that, but if you have your heart set on a strider, then i think that is what you should get. the finish will wear off and the blade will get scratched, sure, but a knife built like a strider just begs to be used.

depends on what you mean by "refinishing."

if you're talking about the tiger stripes, that's not gonna happen. the stripes are a result of black oxide buildup after heat treat.

from the strider FAQ:
"Will Strider redo the stripes on the blade if they are worn?
If you have the time and money, Strider will reproduce the stripes on your blade. Cost will be around $100 and the wait time will take 16-24 weeks. It is suggested that you just use the knife."

if you're talking about the digicam, i'm pretty sure they'll refinish it, and it'll cost money. i don't know how much.

if you're talking about a straight, beadblast coat, it's FREE. and it looks damn fine IMO (i don't care much for stripes).

i send my user strider back to the shop 1-2x/year for a pro resharpening and reblasting, and it always comes back looking great.

I don't have my heart set on a strider though. I just thought it would be nice to have a knife that can be abused fearlessly. CRK has a reasonable refinishing program, I think it's about 40 dollars to refinish both handles and blades. I can see doing that once a year on a hard use knife. But a hundred dollars and 24 weeks? For that much, I'd better get a new blade, and I'd better get it in a week.
For that matter, I hate coated blades. Why the heck can't I get a plain blade for that much money? Sheesh. I guess when it gets terribly scratched up, I can just sand it down and refinish it by hand and make it plain. Then I get to sell it at a huge loss years later. Great...

here are two examples of strider finishes just the way i like 'em.

according to the site, the tiger stripes are done after the heat treat. the blade turns black and it is the bead blasted to bring the grey through. think i said that right.

and yeah, it sounds striders may not be what you are looking for.

Alright, the free bead blast of the blade makes up for it, nevermind. Totally fair.

But say, what'll it take to get one of these sweet grid finishes?

so... you're talking about getting tiger stripes then? cause yea, it's expensive and takes a long time. sorry bro. :'(

now we're talking. like i said, straight up beadblasting is free, and IMO it looks outstanding. turnaround time for reblast and sharpening is like a week, or a little more depending on if the guys are at a blade show or something. send 15 bucks for shipping, and they send your knives back to you via FEDEX.

gluck!

ps,
you're right, CRK has a refinishing service as well. for their fixed blades, it's 23.00 for straight black. for a folder (blade and handle) it's like 45.00. they do an excellent job as well.

hhahahha. fork over the dough for a custom. ;)

i've never seen the grid pattern done on anything but custom striders. and you probably can't get it re-done, unless you have 100 dollars and 24 weeks.

Well, if I end up buying an RCC (I have negotiations going on for one as we speak) I'll inquire about getting the grid finish on it for some amount of money down the road.

back to your original question about the strider warranty, what you've heard so far is correct. if you break it unintentionally (and they are really forgiving), it gets fixed or replaced.

they've proven this warranty to me twice now, and i'm proud to say i'm a continuing strider owner/user.
