So was it a good lesson, or was he being kind of a jerk?

Hey guys, I wanted to get your opinion on something.

Sometime ago I decided that I wanted to go 'stealth' camping in this state park somewhat near me. Basically I wanted to cycle to the location and through the park during the day for some exercise, and then keep out of sight when it closed and spend the night there. Not really a big deal, right?

Well, I didn't know this particular park very well, so I decided to take someone along with me. He suggested that we pool our resources and go shopping together for the some food to cover the one night. He suggested that we buy a nice steak and grill it (the park has those grill things you can use). So we did, and loaded up our bikes and everything was seemingly fine.

Later in the evening when it was time to grill up the steak, we did so and he said his stomach was acting up after riding so long and that he only wanted a tiny piece of steak. So I said, "Are you sure?"........and he said, "yes." So I was cutting him a small piece, and he says ........."Even smaller, all I want is a little slice to get some flavor into my mouth, that's all." So I move the knife over and cut him this very small piece.

Then he says, "Remember that when we agreed to split the money for this steak, we also agreed that one person would cut, and the other would choose which half he wants?"

I replied......."Yes."

So he went on........."Good, I want the big part, you can eat the tiny slice."

I said, "What are you trying to pull?"

And he said, "Nothing at all. I am just teaching you a valuable lesson. You can never plan what is going to happen when you are out in the bush. Anyone can get lost and be caught without provisions, and furthermore, you should know better then to rely on someone else. You are not going to break your word are you? It's only one night. Give me the big piece of the steak. "

So I grudgingly gave him the big piece of steak and spent a pretty hungry night out after cycling all day. It was just one night, so not like it was life threatening or anything.

What is your opinion on this situation? Did he have a valid point, or was he just being somewhat of a jerk? How would you have reacted?

I guess its a lesson but I would have told him to kiss my @$$.

Hope you only paid for your share :)

Jerk. Screwed you out of a meal. If youd known you had no food, you couldve spent some time gathering wild edibles, and maybe trapped some food.

His intentions were good I guess...but still.

I wouldve popped both his tires in the middle of the night, and told him he shouldve been prepared when he had to fix them or walk his bike out in the AM.

I thought you guys were first going to get caught.
Perform brokeback stuff.
Or get in a fight, for food.

You're way nicer than me-I'd have played along, then woke up in the middle of the night and pulled the tubes and tires off of his bike and rode away:D When he called a couple of days later, it would be "Trust no-one" and a few other choice words.

If I wanted a Sensei I'd go to a dojo, I don't need friends to teach me lessons:thumbdn:

He was being a huge jerk. I would've told him to suck it and thrown the little piece in the bush, keeping the big one. You should've stolen his bike and left during the night, and left a note saying "You know better than to rely on someone else".

Sorry but it sound to me that he is more of an *** then a teacher. He is nothing more then someone who plays honest people. If it were me and i wanted to teach a lesson it would go for the two of us. Both of us dont eat. If thats how he acts all the time he would not be a friend of my. Sorry but if it was me out there with you cycling i can promise you that you can and would rely on me. No back stabbing or playing games. In your place i would have droped the steak on the ground "by mistake of course". Then handed it to him after all you never know what you find out there for food. You do eat what you can get your hands on in real survival. That rubs me the wrong way sorry.

Sasha

It's like, he's suppose to be your friend, whom a person you can trust. So why in the hell would he do that? Doesn't make sense.

exactly.

You dont eat, I dont eat.

What couldve been a really sweet outing was spoiled. Why do some people always think they need to "teach" people lessons.

That was a dick move.

Im glad to know that everyone on here thinks alike. That guy can make lawyers and politicians look like angels.

He was being an ass.

The proper response would've been to tell him, OK, as you put your little piece in your mouth, and then throw his big piece into the pond, and then tell him to have at it.

When he says "WTF?!", just explain to him: "I am just teaching you a valuable lesson. You can never plan what is going to happen when you are out in the bush. Anyone can get lost and be caught without provisions, and furthermore, you should know better then to rely on someone else."

Then explain that you kept your word – you're letting him have the piece he chose. Let him know that you are teaching him a lesson, that friends giving each other their word relies as much on the spirit of the oath and on good faith between honest men as it does on the actual words. :D

(And then get yourself better friends.)

Yeah Sasha. Its cool to know there are likeminded people in this world.

If SHTF, Im starting a WSS eutopia. So everyone needs to get a WSS patch to gain entrance to paradise.

I pretty much have the frame of mind never to complain outwardly no matter what the situation is, but yeah I'm pretty firmly in the camp that thinks it was a jerk move.

If there was any doubt, it sealed it for me when while he was eating the big piece of steak he looked at me and said...

"Have you seen Survivorman? He goes in for a whole week with just some peanuts and beef jerky. That piece is more then enough to sustain you for a single night."

i would've said that i absolutley agree about "You can never plan what is going to happen when you are out in the bush." and then i would've eaten his leg.

by his logic, that is fair.

the real lesson is there is no honor amongst thieves.
