So was it a good lesson, or was he being kind of a jerk?

The correct reaction would have been to nod sagely, ponder for a moment, then respond in kind by sharing some deep wisdom of your own - "When two men squabble about steak over a campfire, the man holding the knife gets the last word" - while proceeding to eat the entire steak yourself.

;)

lol thats awesome

Mentor best answer, yet.
Depends on how good a friend. I have some mates who play some pretty dirty tricks, revenge is always fun so long as no one gets hurt. I tend to wait for my revenge till it is icey cold.

You learned a very valuable lesson about what a jerk your "friend" is.

Time to upgrade your friends.

As for how I would have reacted, I would have said, "I appreciate you trying to teach me something, but your lesson isn't part of the bargain. I still have the knife, and I'm still cutting, and you can keep your lesson." I would have then cut the steak in two as fairly as possible, gone home and never had anything to do with that liar again.

Sorry but it sound to me that he is more of an *** then a teacher. He is nothing more then someone who plays honest people. If it were me and i wanted to teach a lesson it would go for the two of us. Both of us dont eat. If thats how he acts all the time he would not be a friend of my. Sorry but if it was me out there with you cycling i can promise you that you can and would rely on me. No back stabbing or playing games. In your place i would have droped the steak on the ground "by mistake of course". Then handed it to him after all you never know what you find out there for food. You do eat what you can get your hands on in real survival. That rubs me the wrong way sorry.

Sasha

I was thinking the very same way. I don't think I could have a very good time after that. What if he got a couple of flats during the night? What if his water tasted odd in the morning. That might put him in a survival situation. Cheap lesson to learn about him. A friend would not do that. He will probably have a laugh at your expense when you get back. He won't keep his mouth shut about it. Merry Christmas. I can see new friends on the horizon. Loosearrow

Sorry to hear about this. Aren't we all adults? What kind of person tricks a friend like that?

I guess that another lesson he tought you was not going with him anywhere never again. Valuable lesson or not, he was a jerk for not splitting the food 50% with you.

When we go climbing to the Alps we usually carry less food than desired and when it is time to eat, we split everything evenly. And I mean it.

I would of gave him the WHOLE steak , and said " Now , I am going to teach YOU a lesson......it's about selfishness.

Well, I didn't know this particular park very well, so I decided to take someone along with me. He suggested that we pool our resources and go shopping together for the some food to cover the one night. He suggested that we buy a nice steak and grill it...

What is your opinion on this situation? Did he have a valid point, or was he just being somewhat of a jerk? How would you have reacted?

From these comments, I am assuming he was not a good friend. He seems to be more of an acquaintance. How long have you known him? Do you ever have to see him again?

I have gone out to the woods, hunting, etc. with both good friends and somebody I was just acquainted with. There are good and bad in both and I've quit doing anything with some guys because of the things they have pulled, just like this situation.

You can't change what happened, but you can change your future interaction with this person. If you do not have to see him again, I suggest that is exactly what you do. Don't talk to him again! If you do, I suggest that you tell him how untrustworthy he is now and that you no longer wish to ever be around him again. The "trust" is the key here. This type of person would also take the shirt off your back because he was cold and let you freeze! :( All to prove a point!

My reaction would not have been good in this situation as I wouldn't have let him off with the dishonesty of his "condition." He brought up an agreement from the past through a LIE of his own. Therefore, it would make the earlier agreement void in my mind!

Good luck!

Cheating voids the agreement. The guy's an assclown. Unless there was a damned good reason to tolerate him I'd have wiped my ass with the steak and thrown it in his face.

I would not trust that person again in the woods or anywhere. I do not think he acted honorably or fairly. I hope that you will guard yourself against any dealings with him in the future.

Meh. Lesson learned...I personally always bring lots of extra snacks and food, usually just because I get hungry frequently. Often, though, whoever I'm with isn't prepared, so I share lots too. It is a good object lesson that you should always have reserves/backups for emergencies. It was in really bad taste though.

I think it would have been better to "lose" the steak, or drop it, or whatever. Then he could have pulled out a steak and said "hey, look, I have a spare for us to enjoy".

For me, camping is about enjoying myself, not making it miserable via intentionally starving myself.

I can't really imagine doing that to a friend without quickly adding "just kidding!" to the end.

Yeah, he was a jerk. Don't take him camping anymore.

Merry Christmas!

The lesson wasn't learned here.

What you call sticking to your word is just a rationalization for failing to stand up for yourself. Keeping your word doesn't have to mean letting people deliberately screw you. Nobody's going to respect you if you're not willing to stand up and tell people to eff off when they jerk you around. Your so-called buddy was no doubt giggling to himself all night about how easy you were to push around. That guy will never respect you.

I would have recut the steak into equal portions and told him to go ... his hat.

That's your lesson.

LOL! You have got to be kidding! If the story is true, I would have given him the big chunk of steak with a smile and he would have woken up paracorded into his sleeping bag the next morning. That is not a friend, by the way...

Once he fell asleep, I would have beaten him with a large log.

After all, there's no telling what's going to happen in the bush.
