So was it a good lesson, or was he being kind of a jerk?

i dont get it was this guy a personal survival teacher or just a buddy you brought along? if it was just a buddy,he would never have gotten a PIECE of that steak, nor would he be my "buddy" any longer.

I don't get it either! How hard is it to say "I don't appreciate being lied to and I don't like to be conned".

Imagine if you get an E-Mail from someone in Nigeria asking for help to get some money out of the country, you agree to help then you find out it is a con, but because you agreed already you feel honour bound to go through with it even though you know it is a con. WTF? Sometimes I am astounded by the level of some peoples gullibility.

As someone has already mentioned it does sound like he may of been jealous of your friendship with his girlfriend. Maybe he was trying to teach you something (if you read between the lines)...stay out of his relationship and don't interfere.

Since you're good friends with the girlfriend why don't you tell her with all the details!! Lets see how well that goes down with his relationship.

When you really look at it, it's not revenge but just telling the truth and how it happened.

Paybacks a bitch!

Hey guys, I wanted to get your opinion on something.

Sometime ago I decided that I wanted to go 'stealth' camping in this state park somewhat near me. Basically I wanted to cycle to the location and through the park during the day for some exercise, and then keep out of sight when it closed and spend the night there. Not really a big deal, right?

Well, I didn't know this particular park very well, so I decided to take someone along with me. He suggested that we pool our resources and go shopping together for the some food to cover the one night. He suggested that we buy a nice steak and grill it (the park has those grill things you can use). So we did, and loaded up our bikes and everything was seemingly fine.

Later in the evening when it was time to grill up the steak, we did so and he said his stomach was acting up after riding so long and that he only wanted a tiny piece of steak. So I said, "Are you sure?"........and he said, "yes." So I was cutting him a small piece, and he says ........."Even smaller, all I want is a little slice to get some flavor into my mouth, that's all." So I move the knife over and cut him this very small piece.

Then he says, "Remember that when we agreed to split the money for this steak, we also agreed that one person would cut, and the other would choose which half he wants?"

I replied......."Yes."

So he went on........."Good, I want the big part, you can eat the tiny slice."

I said, "What are you trying to pull?"

And he said, "Nothing at all. I am just teaching you a valuable lesson. You can never plan what is going to happen when you are out in the bush. Anyone can get lost and be caught without provisions, and furthermore, you should know better then to rely on someone else. You are not going to break your word are you? It's only one night. Give me the big piece of the steak. "

So I grudgingly gave him the big piece of steak and spent a pretty hungry night out after cycling all day. It was just one night, so not like it was life threatening or anything.

What is your opinion on this situation? Did he have a valid point, or was he just being somewhat of a jerk? How would you have reacted?

A few questions:

Did you learn anything from it? If so, then "yes" it was a good learning experience.

Did he have a knife bigger than yours or a gun? If not, then I'd have eaten the big piece of the steak and dared him to open his mouth again. That's what he gets for only wanting the small piece in the first place.

Now a suggestion:

You should have given him the big piece of the steak...and then slashed both his bicycle tires after he fell asleep, left early the next morning (while he was still asleep) leaving him a note:

"Survival lesson: never fuck with a man who has a knife and hasn't eaten very much.

Have a nice walk back, Pussycakes."

I would have told him to go F himself.

You should have eaten the whole thing to teach him the lesson of "say what you mean," and "don't cry wolf."

Maybe a lesson in "survival of the fittest" was in order...

"Well, now you only get the steak that you can take from me, otherwise, nice lesson hungry guy"

:)

The jerk took advantage of you. First, he invalidated the original agreement to have one cut and the other choose by his subsequent instructions to you to cut him a small piece. Second, you relied on his instructios, even though he next indicated he was insincere and had purposely lied to you in order to cheat you out of your fair portion. He then has the gall to call you to stand by your (original) agreement, even though he was being a complete asshat.

You should have stood up to him and said that if the original agreement was still in effect, you would cut again. There is no way you should have given in on this one. He was not honorable or hoonest. Teaching you a lesson was the last thing on his mind. Unfortunately, you got punked, either because this guy intimidated you or confused you to the point where the above was not clear to you. I'm sure he is laughing to all of his "friends" about how he suckered you. The fact is he stole from you.
