So, what's your favorite woods knife?

The one that lives in my daypack is a Scandi in 1070 -- the blade was made by Ivan Campos, the ivory/ebony handle W Ebony 1.jpgby Kris Klammer of Edmonton.

Who's the maker? I don't recognize the mark.

Thanks,

Frosty

Blade is one of last forged by Yrjö Puronvarsi,as the current blacksmith is his grandson,Antti Mäkinen.(i had small piece of mammoth for handle)

Really nice, can you tell us the make and model?

My main companion for more than a quarter century has been the Schrade Walden 165OT Woodsman. The one in the first picture is the original one I bought back in the early 1970's.

Wow, memory lane. I had a Woodsman about 25 years ago. Can't remember exactly what happened to it. I was into fragrant smoke and liquid refreshments quite vigorously in those days.

I guess that I'm still an evolving knife Neanderthal. I still tend to grab something like this. But maybe there is hope for me as I'm packing my necker more often now.

I use the blades in this pic probably the most ... don't carry a single knife ... usually a large blade in the rucksack for camp/wood processing and a smaller belt knife for finer work. The UKPK is legal over here for EDC so is usually in a pocket ...

The top scandi is a Mick Hill 5 inch 01 Woodlore copy but with thinner stock ... the bottom one is a Woodlore ... hard to pick between these two ... the photo was from a practise session trying to decide which one worked better ... any differences are plus and minus points all at the same time ... very hard to score ...

The Busse khukri easily beats all my other large blades for speed at processing wood and works as quick as my GFB Forrest Axe on chopping ... certainly limbs a fallen tree quicker ... the serrated spine helps on weight ... shaves about two to three ounces off my none serrated version and has a number of bonus points when anchoring the blade and making twine etc ... at least on this one I have narrowed it down to "one knife" ...

Between the Woodlore and the Mick Hill the differences are all "nuance" stuff ... the Woodlore bites deeper on a wood cut ... but the Mick Hill can shave wood better ... that last point is handy if repairing a dink to your axe haft ... the deeper cut is useful on feather sticks ... it all stems from the height of the primary scandi grind ... the Mick Hill is higher than the Woodlore.

The Hill knife is better at food prep ... the Woodlore tends to "ping" the stuff it slices off the board sometimes ... particularly carrots ... all down to the thickness of the knife ... but the Woodlore butchers game better ... that last point probably down to the 4 inch blade working easier inside a carcass ...

Needless to say the Hill knife is more versatile because of it's length at batonning logs for sticks and on a power cut the extra inch of edge makes for quicker whittling on tent peg points etc ...

Each of them though is remarkably comfortable in use ... I once did a task with my top contender knives carving canoe paddles ... did four of them ... only these two knives seemed to have a grip which did'nt fatigue my hand ...

If I had to pick only one to run out of the "burning house" scenario ... I guess it would be the Woodlore ... but that is only on the profit margin and waiting list issue ...

I do have a damascus damasteel version of the Woodlore by Alan Wood which I got for the "stainless steel" qualities ...

The grip on this one is actually better than the two above for comfort ... but I have'nt used it much ... from what I have done though, this one might knock the other two off the perch ... the edge holding on the damasteel is noticeably better than 01 ...

I'm also with Mist and Bryan (wait, aren't you both named...), favorites not favorite. It just happens to be some of them are from Bryan.

If I'm going out in the woods around here, I normally take my RAT 3 (D2 version) with me.
