So, you have a pretty knife, but what do you use when you need to cut

If I am in the kitchen, I use a kitchen knife.

Other than that, my go-to cutter is a Leatherman Wave. It is good for most cutting I need to do and I can get another one without too much trouble if it becomes somehow broken or lost ("loaned" to my brother-in-law).

There is a machete under the rear seat of my pick-up.

I should have also included what my 'pretty knife' is, a beautiful queen of the collection, Reate Wave

This is a very capable knife, just so pretty it's tough to use on any chores that would muck it up ;) but it's good to know if it was pressed to cut something, it certainly could!

Usually, I don't need to cut a lot of stuff like some here do...<snip>...
I think more than a few here look for excuses to use their knives when there might be better tools available
I'm in that same camp - I've been quite open about the fact that I often go days, even weeks, at a time without reaching for a knife. (Yet I still carry a traditional, a modern folder, and a fixed blade - go figure.).

That’s one reason I don’t have highly ornate knives and stuff. I would be to cautious about using them for fear of damaging them so I tend to stay away from them. I do have a couple Buck of the month 112 knives with some really nice looking wood on them that I use only sparingly but only because I have other knives that are my edc preference and I don’t want to lose them out in the wilds or damage them. They would be almost impossible to replace like they are.

Not that I consider my other knives are ugly but more ordinary and still nice looking. If it gets some wear and tear I just think of it as character and battle scars. Lol and I can replace them easily enough because they are regular production knives where as the limited edition knives are hard to find and very expensive.

I have a bunch of inexpensive folders and slipjoints I choose oned depending on the task and I've found they are up to the task at hand. My more expensive knives are just safe queens. I will most likely not be buying anymore knives I'm 67 and have over 200 knives at some point it's no longer collecting but simply lunacy.

I usually grab something from my slipjoint box.

I currently have 2 fairly pricey knives that are unused and will stay that way only until I decide if they stay or go. If they stay, they will be used. I intentionally keep no safe queens. I currently carry and use a small Sebenza and a Winkler SD2 every day and lately a Winkler Highland Hunter on my belt when out on the acreage. All 3 get used.

Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley An excellent thread. I'll have to get a few pictures when I have a chance to back up what I'm saying here. I carry nice knives every day, and use 'em all for opening mail, opening an Amazon package, snipping an errant thread off a shirt, and so on, but when actual cutting chores need to happen, I carry/use one of the following:

1. GEC 2019 #97 - Allegheny model - This has been my trusty "eat'n" knife for a few years now, and the patina it has taken is amazing. This is actually by far my most used knife.
2. Opinel #12 - Box cutting/breakdown duties. This knife became a dedicated cardboard eater, because it's so easy to sharpen it back to screaming sharp after use.
3. Cold Steel Recon 1 (in XHP no less!)- This has been my dedicated camping folding knife for several years, and has done everything from carving small sticks for figure-4 traps, to shaving larger sticks for s'mores, to whittling, to general food prep. There have been camping trips where this is the only knife I end up using the entire time, and candidly, with its TRIAD lock, I don't really know that I'd need anything else, honestly.
4. Victorinox World Traveller Lite - Usually in my pocket when camping, and in my daybag when at work, it's done a lot over the years.
5. TOPS BOB Fixed Blade: This thing has been almost everywhere and done it all. It's now been retired, in favor of plenty of other fixed blades I own, but it was one of my first "nice" fixed blades and it camped with me a LOT, and I'll always hold a special place for it in my heart.

Knives. There's use, and then there's use.
