SoCal "Survival" Hike, May 23rd.

i think i rather walk in front... easier for her to get the one in the back than catch the guy in front... :D :D :D

i just realized that my ankle is also bothering me... i am going to be pissed if i can't go because of this... :(

i was just reading the attached PDF and it makes it sound like alcohol stoves are not permitted... and last time i went backpacking at Mount Wilson they told me the same thing kinda...

so how come we always see pictures here of people using these stoves???

Campfire permits are not required at developed Forest Service campgrounds or picnic areas. Visitors may use the stoves, fire pits and campfire circles provided by the Forest Service, or their own barbecues, liquid or gas fuel portable stoves, as long as proper clearance is maintained.

You can use it anywhere if you get a campfire permit. Without the permit (which is free) you can still use it at campsites or picnic areas.

Hey, my wife will out-hike most of us! Really, I totally lucked out, completely.

FYI I'm pretty gassy, so you might want me to walk in the back...unless you're into that stuff like Sasha. ;)

So Jason that means if we poke you with something sharp and and bring a match to you that means you would just FLARE UP ????? No wonder you like to ride bikes and not a Cage lol... Yea i got my limits and i think i would stay away from you... Better find someone else to snaggle up to..... Well im just saying in case you want to snaggle up at the end of the hike...

lol

i just completed a walk on the treadmill for 2.7 miles with a 6.5 incline... hope that prepares me for sunday... :D :D

I am planning to do 4 miles tomorrow, then 5 on friday and 7 on saturday to be ready for sunday... :D :D :D i really want to go but my knee/ankle pain don't want to go away... :D

I suggest you take Saturday off, relax, stretch a bit, and let your knee/ankle chill out before Sunday. Overdoing it before a hike can do more damage than good.

Alrighty there. So are we meeting at REI parking lot?? I would like to make sure all the details are set and we all know what is going on. I got a parking permit to park. Might ride my bike over to meet ya all.

Sasha

Okay...

FINAL DETAILS:

DATE AND TIME: Meet at the REI parking lot promptly at 8AM on Sunday, May 23rd. From there we will decide on who will carpool in whose car. We will need Adventure Passes to park at the trailhead. Buy them beforehand!

LOCATION: Here is the REI: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...cadia,+Los+Angeles,+California+91006&t=p&z=15

HIKE: Here is the trailhead: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...01,-118.022304&spn=0.007294,0.016168&t=h&z=17 Here is the map of the hike (we're doing the loop counter-clockwise): http://lh4.ggpht.com/_eNKqVM_r4Ts/S-9_nqbmLcI/AAAAAAAAAd0/oxGSTY6QTI8/chantry flats hike.jpg

CONTACT: If someone wants my phone number, just in case they get lost or something, email me via at: wildewinds @ yahoo.com (no spaces)

BRING FOOD AND WATER. The hike is 10 miles and doesn't have any vending machines along the way.

BRING ADEQUATE CLOTHING. A good distance of the hike is along a stream with lots of tree cover and it's supposed to be pretty chilly on Sunday (forecast says 63 degrees high temp in Arcadia. It'll be a bit colder where we're hiking).

DISCLAIMER: Everyone is responsible for their own safety and this hike is not an official event of any kind. I'm just posting the details of the hike. Hike at your own risk. (hah, seriously, I was a member of a hiking club where someone died on one of the hikes and the legal backlash was crazy)

Thanks for putting all the info down in one spot.

Just checked NOAA and looks like a 20% chance of light showers in Arcadia after 1100...probably greater than 20% and starting earlier at higher elevations. You may want to pack a light rain jacket or poncho just in case.

one more question...

how much water should we take??? is there drinkable water along the way...

thanks...

probably everyone already went to sleep... :D :D :D

Im bringing a 3L bladder and an extra 1L bottle. I figure that 4L of water should be more then enough for a 10 mile hike with cool weather. Going to bring some power bars for a snack and thats it .

Pretty much same here. With this much water, expect plenty of pee breaks :p

100oz of water for me, as usual. I've only used it all up on a 14 mile HOT hike with much more elevation gain than we're doing. I even shared it with someone at the end.
