Society is breaking down, ya have to move on...what knife ?

My BOB already has a bunch of knives and survival stuff in it already, Howlin' Rat, and some good slicers so the only thing I'd grab would be the Chopweiler or my EK #5 Combat Bowie, bags already got everything else.

My "Out the door BoB " has a knife or two in it, as does my vehicle BoB. There are no exact repeats, as they are oriented for different things. If I had time to choose one more knife, it would be of the Sharpened Pry bar ilk, in case I had to bust my way into or out of a building. It would have about a five inch blade, because it might need to be used in very tight quarters. I learned this from an old magazine article where a custom knife maker designed a useful knife under the needs of Canadian Swat type team. They needed a knife that was an entry tool first, a combat weapon second.

lots of good pratical advice here; but in a world wide catistrophic, SHTF event, would'nt a good ZOMBIE killer be on your must have list ? for example the RAT , RC-10.

I'd go with a 7" blade - large enough to split wood, defend myself and my family in a pinch, small enough to do food prep and other routine tasks (although nothing is routine in this scenario, is it). Probably a Becker BK7 or a Skinny ASH.

That said, there would be no way I'd be caught taking only one blade! The other members of my family would each get at least one knife each, and the German Shepherd would go too (no knife for her, though :)).

I enjoy the mental exercise of these questions. Thanks Pitdog:thumbup:
I have had to walk out into all kinds of last minute grab and go situations in my lifetime. There are ALWAYS many folks that, never having asked themselves these types of questions, face harsh situations with no gear and no plan.

I grab my HI 17 3/4" WW II Khukuri with a Chiruwa handle, in an underarm rig scabbed together from old web gear. Cut out a walking staff and sharpen it and away we go;)

:D

Exactly what I carry, now.... I'm not going to carry something that makes me a target (stands out, tactical) or a victim (incapable for use in defence). I want to be under the radar.

eh? No you want to look pretty ;)

functionally pretty :D We all overcompensate though.....

Would have to say a 7 " blade capable of doing all the things said ...one of my favorites" Cumberland knife " by Mike Mann at Idaho knife works :D

my go to blades.........landi utility or breeden pathfinder!!!!!! don't leave home without it!!!!!!

The chances of me taking just one knife is like the chance that I'd eat just one potato chip out of the bag, or just have just one beer. At the moment, and I'll probably change my mind in five minutes, I'd say Bark River Golok. Not much I couldn't do with it if I had to, it's a fast little chopper, and small enough to carry in my jacket unnoticed (I tried it before posting).

Folder.........Spyderco Manix

Fixed...........Gerber Yari??.........Dozier K2?? (either/or)

That would work nicely!

As for what I have, I think I would carry my Ontario sp-8. There isn't much I can't do with it and at two pounds it makes a heck of a chopper. I have shaved with it as well.

Hey Pitdog, did you go to see "The Road" for your inspiration for this particular thread?:D

I would take either this
SGS.jpg

or this
khuk_10.jpg

I have both, and have used both in the bush, and have no problems using either of them for all of Pitdogs specifications.

I love these threads! Its intresting what yall come up with. Grab n go I'd have my ole CS LTC. Its never fails me ans I can slice cherry tomatoes with it...cause I've had it forever. My Breeden Striker and Leatherman are on me from the time I get up till the time I go to bed anyway so I'll hafta assume I'd have them too.

Even though we do these threads habitually, I still enjoy them, because I think they force a person to think about what they carry when they do get out.

Having said that, I'm on a one month road trip and I brought all the knives in the pictures below (not counting 2 folders, a leathemand, and several SAKS), so as you can guess I'd have a hard time picking one. But if it literally could only be one it would be the toughest big knife I have -- a Busse Straight Handle Steel Heart (SHSHII). Back up choices SFNO or RC-4.

Gonna have Bryan Breeden make me up a SERE 5.5 of his, with a couple of personal changes. That'll certainly be my number one blade for pretty much any situation. Big enough to suffice as a chopper for shelter building and fire prep(if to do nothing else than to cut a baton for cross-batoning), yet handy enough for food prep and trap-making.

I imagine a Becker TacTool would be good for pretty much everything as well, except for field dressing game. I think it'd particularily shine in an urban environment, assuming the situation would allow you to openly use something as badass as that.
