SOG Flash 2: Pending Happyness

Thanks man. You know, I got a replacement knife from my dealer, and it has the same amount of vertical bladeplay. After some resaerch I have figured out that there are two models of the Flash 2.

The one I have has a round locking button, and there was an older one with a rectangular locking button. Since I have now had two with the round locking button that both had a good amount of vertical play, I figure every person who has a Flash 2 and claims that theirs has no vertical bladeplay -probably have the old rectangular button model. The design of the lock is a lot different.

-I think that is why SOG was unable to fix mine. The new ones are just worse than the old rectangular lock versions. The new ones have a problem that cant be fixed. IDK. I have given up on SOG -I wish that Chris had of told me that the model that I have (or the new ones) have a bladeplay problem.

I still have a flash 2, and it still has a lot of vertical bladeplay -the same amount it always did (I kept the original and sent back the replacement since both knives had the same problem- the original is my proof anyhow). I guess I can just use it until it breaks, but it is not a knife I am proud to own. I might end up trading it (hopefully), or giving it away.

Sorry to hear that man.I think your better off just giving it away,to some one who doesn't know a thing about knives. All I've ever heard about SOG folders is bad,bad stuff. Then when it gets to their customer service it gets even worse.
Maybe you would have better luck over in the spyderco forum.I know for a fact they stand behind their products 100%.

Anyway better luck on your next purchase.
I'd bet my Sebenza that it wont be with SOG...

I just saw those new versions at Dick's yesterday. I did not handle one, but perhaps you are right that the change they made is somehow not a good move! I did not even like the looks of them!

I love my spyderco knives. This summer I bought a Salt 1 and I think an endura is in my future.

I supose I might buy a SOG again (one day), but I would have to be 100% sure that it would meet my expectations, which I consider acceptable and standard (no serious bladeplay for one). Kershaw, spyderco etc -always meet my expectations and often go beyond them.

I have tried out the Flash 2 rescue model with the rectangular shaped sliding bolt and the Meridian Topo. They are both fine. I did not notice any excessive blade play at all the Flash 2. I like the Meridian. The Flash 2 is all business all though it is a combo edge I like the fact that SOG chose to put the serrations on a good two thirds of the blade (a decent length) making quite a useful rescue knife. It has a nice good grip and the most appealing is how light it is.

I hope the newer ones don't have excessive blade play since I would love to handle an aluminum version (is the aluminum as light?) Has anyone else had a problem with blade play on the newer model (especially the aluminum)

Just Incase you were wondering I got a SOG Flash II about two weeks ago and I had the same problem. But after me playing with it for awhile the lock up is rock solid. No play in any direction. The only play I sometimes have is a little tiny bit of side to side play which I fix with a quick adjustment of the pivot screw. If you just give this knife a little bit of time you will love it. The only thing I really don't like about this knife is the safety. I doubt that this would EVER open in my pocket, and most of time the only purpose this lock serves is turning itself on in my pocket so I can't deploy my knife when I take it from my pocket. But overall this is an amazing blade that I think you will really like if you just give it a bit of time.

greater, I think the aluminum handles are make it like 1 oz heavier but it would still be a super light knife.

"I got a Flash II at Lowes last week, no play in the blade at all."

Is it the rectangular bolt version or the new one with the stud that moves in an arch?

I purchased the aluminum one with a circular bolt recently and took it apart it is the same type of bolt lock as the original square one (I saw a picture of that one disassembled on the web) or close enough with that little circular stud added it helps with leverage and is more easier to activate.

I would love the aluminum one (yes I bought one recently) however it does have that annoying play. When I took it apart and inspected it I determined it does not affect the lockup integrity (I don't care about warranty hoopla, it seems to be fiction anyway) but it is annoying and I don't like it.

Too bad my zytel rescue model with a square bolt locks up right. I'll give it time and see what happens or what I can do with it.

UPDATE ! UPDATE !! UPDATE !!!

When I found my SOG Twitch 2 Aluminum model had excessive blade play I decided it was time to immediately contact the pros at SPECIAL SPECIAL SOG CUSTOMER SUPPORT TEAM WHICH CONSISTED OF ME, MR ALLEN WRENCH, MR FLAT BASTARD FILE , AND SR MINI CIRCULAR FILE.

The problem with the new twitch 2 (my particular one anyway) is the new stud arch toggle whatever you want to call it (I call it a cam) actually impedes the bolt from fully traveling forward into the locked position (lack of quality control) the good news is it that it's repairable. The bad news is if you file too much you might screw things up more (file carefully.) I filed the groove in the cam a little deeper with a circular file to allow the bolt to slide forward a little more. I filed just a tad too much and I was unable to unlock the blade (It almost unlocked, it wanted to, but almost is not enough.)

Fortunately I didn't overdo it too much so (here is where it can get dangerous if you don't know what you are doing) I was able to file more of a ramp on the lock bar to allow the blade to close when the toggle was pulled back.

The part I filed made no contact at all when the blade was fully locked open and bar fully forward so lockup integrity was not affected.

I am now the proud owner of an SOG Flash 2 aluminum model knife with precision lockup and zero wobble that I can show to my friends without having to worry about the embarrassment of them mocking me for paying good money for a knife that rattles.

My only question is when they buy their own and experience rattle will they mob me and hang me off the nearest lamp post ?
Hopefully not.

I am now really happy with my newer model SOG Twitch 2

PS I do like the safety lock it is a good option to have. If I get into a bit of rough and tumble I am not comfortable with any auto or assisted opener with a loaded spring and no safety residing in my person or pocket.

When you take this thing apart though the safety has a tiny tiny tiny ball bearing that is held in place with grease only after you disassemble take care not to let this ball bearing roll away or you will have some time finding it.

Blackfeetmageet would you like to sell your flash 2 to me. I feel more confident with my allen wrench and files at hand. I am curious if this problem is the same as mine (universal.)

I have the same problem with my flash 2 and I dont think I have the skills to do what you did.

I will sell you my Flash 2. I have only used it for a couple paper cut tests -nothing crazy. The edge still shaves skin right off my finger!

1) What price are you thinking and
2) can I even sell anything via bladeforums? Can I pm you?

Oops I forgot you need a Gold membership to sell ($25.00 yearly)

PM me if you can.
