solipsitude

Don, could this entire thing not have been avoided if you just moved on when you read something you didn't think belonged?

I think it's good cause in the wilderness, there's life and death, and everything comes full circle, just like in Solipsitude...........

nice poems esav . you should add something to this thread daily :D.

I will echo that statement!

Very nice poem, Esav, mood evoking and food for thought.:thumbup:

Any forum where posting becomes spoon carving and fire starting in the extreme, gets to be a dry boring place. Esav has shown a ray of light, let it continue.

Look at how popular the creepy things in the woods thread was. People like a little gravy on the potatoes now and then. Maybe we should have more of poems and short stories here, as long as they have the "spirit"of the place.

Carl.

++ and you didn't think Nessmuk, or John Muir had words like that when they seen what they saw!!!!! come on!!!!!

Poetry , I never really get it and usually have to have it explained to me , thus ruining the whole darned thing.

Cool poem though. :)

It's good to see this thread getting back on track. Great poem Essav, and I enjoy reading poems, stories, and just about everything wilderness related. Keep them coming old friend. (Not that we have been friends for a long time, just that your old... :p)

Drinking Spring

Life flows sparkling from the stone,
Down into the rock-bound pool,
Quenching more than thirst that's grown,
For to men it brings renewal.

There is more to life than water,
So we often take for granted,
Liquid life which our ancestor
Would as life itself have counted.

Thirst we meet in life's disguise,
And our empty cups we bring,
Fill 'em up; yes, seize the prize:
Life flows from a mountain spring.

Take a breath, brethren.
Enhance thy calm.
If it deserves to be moved, somebody will move it. If not, then it'll stay and those who want to read it, will.
I admit it threw me a little to see a poetry thread here. But, it does say "Wilderness and Survival Skills" and I can't see where a poetry thread is a wilderness skill or a survival skill.
So, in a roundabout way I agree with Don R. But, I also leave the moving decisions to the mods. They think it don't belong, they move it. If not, it stay where it be. Shawn is just pawn in game of life and he leave it be at that.

I'm not a Robert Frost by any stretch of the imagination and I can't remember iambic timing to save my life, but here are my thoughts (I know: opinions and anal openings):

The first one I kind of like. But, I enjoy haiku. However, those other two seem...flat -- like they were pushed out and didn't come from inspiration. Poetry usually has a feeling about it and I couldn't find any in those two poems. They were forgettable.

I'm a huge fan of Milton, Alighieri, and Frost.

Still in keeping with the nature theme !:D

There was an old man with a beard
Who said, "it's just how i feared!-
Two owls and a hen
Four larks and a wren
Have all built their nests in my beard.

Or to keep with a knife theme !

There Once was a Man called Reg

Who Went with a Girl in a Hedge

Along came his wife

With a big Bowie Knife

And cut off his meat and two veg !

I try, sometimes to no avail, not to get wrapped up in discussions like this. With that said, and having known a lot of you on this forum for quite a while, both here and elsewhere on the vast WWW, I can make this statement.

It is not my place to regulate rules set forth for proper forum and subforum discussion, but this particular subforum is a VERY close knit community of members. I think it is safe to say that most of the good folk in here choose to log onto BF and park their conversations here. It is more than a subforum, but rather a gathering place at a camp fire.

I think, personally, that any rule limiting what we say and how we say it here, that promotes friendship and good topic matter, is a waste of time and completely unnecessary. It is not only difficult to regulate because of opinion, but ultimately ends in feuding like we see in this thread.

Just my opinion guys.

When I used to teach (and learn) wilderness skills, I counselled (and was counselled) that the ultimate key to survival in the wilderness is mental attitude. I also taught (and was taught) that one should learn to be at peace in the wilderness - and what better way to achieve peace than poetry. And when one is at peace, no panic can cloud the brain or the soul. Survival demands a clear mind and soul.

Yes, I do think that poetry is a wilderness and survival skill.

Thank you, Esav, for reminding me.

Missing (a litany)

Hmm, it got dark early.
It wasn't supposed to snow.
I can't find the flashlight.
Boy, that's a big bear.
No cell signal.
