Some cooking pots...

Nice lazy day today...my wife had to a bunch of school work to do and I had to do some outside home chores:barf: However, I was able to clean up some pots that I used recently boiling water over coals. I wanted to dink around with a couple of alcohol stoves, a little Vargo titanium one and a Swedish mess kit surplus one and a couple extra cottonballs and Vaseline that were left over.

Here's some pics:

Here’s is my Bear Grylls kit Consists of the NATO canteen and plastic top cup; Crusader steel cup and stove stand. I had a buddy from UK send me a stamped out lid for the cup (outstanding product) and with an older Vargo titanium alcohol stove, it works perfectly. I carry the whole kit and caboodle in a Maxpedition Toadstool shoulder bag. Just need my own TV show where I can eat bugs and do stupid stunts:

One thing I’ll say about these nice little alcohol stoves is that you need a good wind screen otherwise the heat just gets sucked away and they aren’t the most efficient to begin with nor put out the most BTU’s…but they are simple, small and quite!

The handy little MSR Stowaway pots (.475, .775, 1.1 and 1.6 liter sizes); these are excellent for storing your food in and make a great pot to use directly on the coals; a little heavy being stainless steel, but a great design. I have a couple different sizes; this is their smallest:

Here’s a trio. Snow Peak’s Trek-700 Ti mug and Vargo’s Ti mug (both nest with a Nalgene one quart bottle); second is a new little Optimus Terra kit that is awaiting our next backpacking trip (couldn’t use over the fire, it’s pretty much a stove-only pot):

Here’s the nifty little inexpensive German mess kit…nice for my bug out bag:

Here’s the Swedish surplus kit that included the little alcohol stove. It’s a pretty big set up, but very durable and it too can be used directly over coals. Here, I’m just using the pot and overly large stove stand and stove. I actually left the alcohol stove outside for the past week or so with fuel in it. Nice to know the seals are still good and it didn’t leak. I was actually able to boil a little over a liter of water TWICE and warm a third liter enough for a cup of tea with just one filling of fuel that was still in the burner!

Hollowdweller will recognize this! Open Country kettle:

Here’s a Civil War repro tin mug…the handle is a little large (hard to pack), but it has a great hinged lid and bail...just make sure you keep it clean out as this tin will rust quickly if not attended:

Here is the little handy Billy from Zebra; nice stainless steel with small pan inset (it’s removable). The folding handle needs to be longer to fold underneath for better packing and it also needs to be stiffened up so it’ll stand up on its own:

That's about it!

WOW. Great and interesting collection of cookware. And I thought I was the only one who bought a lot of gear just to see what works. You have put me to shame. :o

How much are each of those worth roughly? I'm in the market, and I'm kind of leaning towards one of those totonka pots, but $40-50 shipped is pretty steep.

Great stuff, thanks for the pics!! Between you and HD, I'm gonna have to pick up that Open Country Kettle. Looks like what I'm looking for.

You asked the right person. It's obvious Rock owns an outdoor store.

Great collection Rock. Surprisingly your wife seems to be still gullible to the "I'm just going to organize my gear" line as a substitute for "yes honey, I'll do the dishes, vacuuming and help with the laundry".....Mine caught on to that whole trick a long time ago.

Why you rolling your eyes at me doc? He may as well own a store, he's certainly got more selection than any I've seen.

I wasn't rolling my eyes at you. I was rolling my eyes at the fact that Rock owns so much outdoor gear he might as well own a store. It was a good natured jab at Rock, not you.

The German mess kit as well as the Olicamp stainless cup were about $5.00 and the Snow Peak and Vargo Ti pots are about $30-40. I really like the Snow Peak titanium Trek 700; it nests well with a Nalgene-sized bottle and you can toss it in the coals or used it on a stove with no worries. Also, you can "accidently" leave water in the mug and it won't rust:D Totonka is a pretty decent brand, but the Zebra stainless mugs and cups are probably the best deal out there. If you don't mind aluminum, Open Country is a great bargain as well. I would think that MSR's Stowaway pots are kind of in the same league...

:D I'm here for you to Doc:p It is pretty sad; I didn't even bother with the family cooking stuff we take camping...

Yeah, doesn't work all the time, but I was up early working outside and then did the kitchen...she was busy working on her Masters and classroom school work, I just said I was going to get out of her way and keep the kids busy, quiet and away from her:D

Rock. Do you know how the size of the nato canteen w/ cup compares to the US canteen? I'm trying to decide on a couple of pouches for my pack and need to figure out if it will fit.

It's a tad bit fatter but will fit most pouches geared for USGI canteen cups...it may be a tight fit, but they should work okay. Just squeezed the Crusader cup into a USGI MOLLE canteen pouch; it won't be too easy getting them out though.

Is it taller than a USGI canteen?

No, it's about the same size...the USGI cup is narrower, but wider (length-wise); the Crusader cup is not as wide but deeper (front to back width)...is that confusing enough? I'll try and get a couple pictures to show you...

That is a great post Rock! Love it.

Tell me, if you had to pick one of those set-ups as a favorite, which would it be?

I actually kind of like the looks of that Swedish set! I have a Sierra stove with the upgrade kit with the kettle and lid I like a lot, but using it is not possible to use everywhere when there is a wood fire ban; some will tell you it is ok and others won't.

Any of the nesting cups for bottles or canteens are great for a light-weight kit to boil water in. I really like the German 3-piece kit...smaller than the Swedish kit, lighter (it's aluminum) and works great on a stove or over the fire. Regardless of the $5.00 price, it's a great little mess kit.
