Some people just don't get it.

To be fair, it's not like he's removing the knife for the sake of the feelings of others. It may just genuinely be what he considers a silly logo on an otherwise impressive knife. Nothing wrong with that.

Well I guess you're afraid to let your family eat a Volcano Blast Taco at taco bell, or ride in a Razor ATV. Never play Golf with the Nike Lazar or ride Thunder Road at Paramount Park in NC . Nike, Tour Burner club flames and all might cause arson ?? My Neighbor has a motorcycle, should I really worry he may dress in black and attempt to kill me and my family ? After all it is a Ninja..And lastly I was writing a letter with my pen and noticed the Star of David on top, Mont Blanc, should I call ISIS. Please think about what little things don't mean. And the years of pride placed within knife logos and be happy knives have seen history unfold in many countries. Next will PETA want Case XX to remove the Trapper ? Or maybe we'll just do it ourselves.

These kinds of comments come from the more progressive (aka liberal) side of the fence and people who live in bigger cities in general. Ghetto types do react to a knife as for killing only based on my experience. These same ghetto types expect me to provide them with a knife/blade if it is needed on the job.....

I ignore it completely and pass it off as ignorant people.

We unfortunately live in a world of Trolls who barely have the energy to raise their heads from their smart phones. I'm sure a neighbor asked one of the Wright brothers why they were wasting their time on that contraption. Nobody is going to want to fly. So many people like to sit in on judgement of others. I share my interests with people who are genuinely curious. The others I just chit chat with. Less stressful.

I prefer my knives/tools to have a more professional/traditional look, and for the clips to be on the more "sterile" side rather than the elaborate. As for cartoony skull logos, I don't like them asthetically. You might like something else, good for you, but don't make the assumption that I care what the sheeple think about my knives or that I am afraid of the names companies give their products.

That being said, intent and names can matter in the professional world (i.e. at work), so I am wary of carrying knives with names suggesting combat or fighting. Imagine that you tell your boss that you are carrying a knife as a tool (which many companies wouldn't really care about) and that the name of the knife is the "long range combat-ranger skull crusher". In your private life this wouldn't matter much, but in other areas (i.e. work, police interactions, legal matters) it might.

Imagine pulling out a Microtech Death on Contact! :p

This cigar-smoking dog gets it.

This is a case where we (knife people) get what asked for.

Loads of knives are sold as "combat" or "tactical" knives. Some have names like "Reaper" or "Hoodlum". Popular knife logos have skulls incorporated into the graphics.

And then we come here and act all surprised that the general public is scared of us?

Talk about not getting it!!
I agree buddy, but...but..

All the flashy mall-ninja stuff chafes me quite a bit, even down to one hand openers sometimes. I'm a crotchety old fart who doesn't want his slipjoints and work knives sullied by the "self defense" trip.

However.....

Personal freedoms mon.

Anyones right to swing their arm stops at my face. I wish the damn kids would behave in front of the masses but if they wanna play soldier they have the right I guess.

You're right about some not getting it though.

No one here, we're all cool and intelligent.:):)

I don't know why they named PETA after a bread they put meat on. (I know, "i")

And if God didn't mean for us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat.

I have a manager who collects pens (granted, he uses all he collects, so he's the good kind of collector). He's seen some of the knives that I get shipped to work instead of to my home address, and while he understands that I enjoy knives he still cracks jokes about how he's adding another item to the list of things I do that worry him.

He has told me if I ever go on a killing rampage, he'd be all like, 'Yep, saw that coming'. -_-

Thankfully most of the other people I hang out with are much more appreciative when it comes to nice knives :)

There's people out there that are afraid of everything; whether it's knives, firearms or fast automobiles... Sharpened steel seems to provoke quite a response sometimes.:foot::rolleyes:

Eh I never got all worked up what about people thought of me or my knives. People who were generally negative (and not very many so far) would say one lame and misinformed comment and usually never speak to me again which is just fine with me as I dont particularly like associating myself with idiots anyways. I just enjoy letting them show their ignorance and move on.

Face it: everyone likes, dislikes, fears, or is attracted to different things, and we all act in a reactionary manner occasionally around others. Go with the flow, don't be an exhibitionist (unless feedback is your thing), and don't hide either. Live & learn, teach if you feel like it, but don't if it isn't worth it. Living by example as a proper knife handler (or anything else) generally sheds enlightenment, and can break cycles of stereotypical reactionary behavior all for the better.

I'm on down time right now, so I popped open BF's main page and saw a sale ad with some Mid techs, Customs, and a few Autos. One of my fellow co-workers stopped by, saw the thread, and asked, "What are you looking at? You want to get a knife?" I turned around and told him, "I'm looking into getting a custom." He made a snooty remark, "What do you do with that, stab people? You want to stab people?" Before I could even chew him out for being ignorant, he walked off.

Some people just don't get it... :grumpy:
I would flip it and be like "is that all you think knives are for? What are you, a serial killer?"

The old "why do you need that?" is a losers arguement. Perhaps a better question is "why don't I need a knife?" Try getting into modern plastic packaging with out one, unless you are legitmately weird and carry a pair of scissors (full size, not SAK scissors) on your person.

I agree with a few of the above posters who said that skull/death fetish knives give our community a bad name. Case in point, when get around to getting one of the new Kershaw/Emersons, I will be sanding off the silly skull logo on the clip. I also don't care for the DPX skull logo, yes I get that its that company's thing, but I think its as silly as the Emerson skull.
I dunno, the hest skull seems happy, while the Emerson skull is mean and scawy. ;)

I'm split on "scary" knives. On one hand you can't blame people for looking at some knives and being scared, and it doesn't help that mall ninja types go out their way to look tough many of us knife lovers are trying to downplay our knives in public.

On the other hand, has such a knife lover I do like to have a few big bad blades around. I don't go around showing those to anybody at work, but still don't want to be labeled a "stabber" for owning such knives. And truthfully, if there wasn't such a ridiculous stigma I probably would carry them around once in awhile

People are hilariously bad at dealing with things that are outside their normal experience. Less and less people carry pocketknives, so less and less people see pocketknives in normal, beneficial use. Less and less people have a sane context to put them in -- and put it in an insane context by default, instead. Really, we're struggling against the intellectual equivalent of habitat-loss, here.

Last week I was doing a job taping some stuff up with a buddy. I took out my stockman and set to work cutting pieces of tape. He has previously characterized my pocketknife as a weapon, and I corrected him patiently, then. This time he just chuckled and said, "You and your knives" -- which is slow progress, I admit, but progress just the same. So I handed it to him and said, "Everybody's got to have a hobby, man. Here, try not to hurt yourself." I went back to my desk and got a multitool for a second blade, and with two people on the taping job, we knocked it out in half the time. He may still think carrying a pocketknife is unnecessary and may very well never carry one himself, but at least he has a little bit of mental context now, for why I do carry one.

I would be very interested to hear of a case of ignorance, especially willful ignorance, that was ever cured by the disdain of another. I've never met anybody that weak-willed, myself, nor do I have reason to believe folks are made of flimsier stuff, elsewhere.
