My wife went out to the local shop and bought me a brand new Ruger 10/22 for christmas. It was a complete suprise. I have a 10/22 already, but its pretty old, and I want to start tricking it out a bit, so I wanted another one to keep fairly bone stock, just for woodsbumming etc...

Well, this is my 3rd Ruger 10/22. The first was really old, and I gave it to my nephew a few years back when I bought a new one. The first was wood with blued barrell I bought used for cheap (80 bucks IIRC). The new one I picked up a few years back is stainless with composite stock. As is my newest one.

I noticed something differant about the new one right off the bat. Ruger FINALLY put an extended mag release from the factory! Awesome, as I wasnt a fan of the old style. Also, the stainless finish is differant. Its more of a matte stainless then the shiny one I have. The receiver appears to be gunkoted grey, making it more matte then the other. I really like the more matte finish. Appears more durable.

Anyways, im not gonna push this rifle on anyone. Im sure you all know what a quality piece this is. Ruger makes a damn fine rifle. Ive never had a hiccup from any of the 3 Ive owned(with factory magazines, and ANY ammo)...

Just thought Id share these observations with you guys...Im planning on adding an Eagle sling, and Eagle butstock pouch to this badboy, as well as a taller front sight, and rear peep sight. No optics. I have pretty good eyes, and have no trouble hitting what im shooting at within the effective range of this rifle...

Pics! Feel free to post up pics of your 10/22, and stories/thoughts...

Interesting.

Is the extended release made of metal or plastic?

Also, is it a stainless gun, or carbon steel with a gray finish/coating?

The release is metal....

The tag on the end of the box says SS/SYN. Stainless, and synthetic stock.

Nope, spot on with my other 10/22. I mean, Ive only put a couple hundred rounds out of it so far, but no hiccups, and I can keep the groupings pretty tight on it. Doesnt shoot any differant for me.

Cool! Thanks for the pics and info! I love my 10/22. I've never had a hiccup of any kind with mine, with any kind of ammo (and I usually shoot the cheap stuff). I have thousands of rounds through mine, and I've been tickled pink with the thing since I picked it up. All I did to it was slap a red-dot scope on top, and it's been GTG ever since. Those things are dead-reliable. And pretty darned accurate too!

:edit: I have the rock-bottom "carbine" model- which is blued, with wood furniture. That matte-stainless version looks fantastic for banging around in the woods.

Had a Marlin back in the day. Gotta get myself and both sons one of these. Good guns.

Yeah, the crappy thing is, like everything else, they arent getting any cheaper. The last gun show I went to they were 300 bucks.

A red dot is FANTASTIC for these guns.

Many years ago I got a super deal at a gun show on a 10/22 heavy barrel target model with the laminated stock. Not the easiest carrying field gun but a good shooter for those of us not quite ready to spring for a Volquartsen.

Worth every penny. :D

You know it bro.

Those are nice. Real tackdrivers.

You can quickly drop a TON of coin into one of these...The target model is damn nice IMO.

Yes, if I were considering pounding serious coin into a 10/22, I'd just go all the way and get the Volquartsen. There wouldn't be any question about what it could do and resale value would be better if you ever had to part with it.

Agreed.

I use a Tijicon Reflex on one of mine (yellow triangle instead of red-dot,) but these type of sights really bring out the best in these guns.

Glad about the metal extended mag-release you mentioned. It's about time Ruger started adding these features to the gun.

Mine is a totally stock verison (walnut stock/blued barrel) that I got as a birthday gift close to 20 years ago.

I've considered adding peep sites and maybe fooling around with a folding stock, but I've never followed through. I am fond of the gun and will not likely sell or trade it.

To answer the question about the actual construction. Barrel is stainless. Receiver and subcomponents are painted grey. Remember that nearly all the receiver group is aluminum. Check out the 22s built by Majestic (Arms)? They build some fantastic rimfires. If you are contemplating moving up to a 10(9)/22 mag, handle one first. The rifle is nearly consructed of all steel. It weighes a ton compared to the 10/22.

I've had my Marlin Model 60 for about 15 years now. I bought it because it was cheaper than the 10/22 and money was a bit tight then. I've been so pleased with it that I never replaced it with a "better" rifle like I had planed.

I'd still like to have a 10/22 set up as a bench rifle (heavy bbl, aftermarket trigger, Hogue overmolded stock, and some expensive glass) but I can't justify it right now.

One of these days.

Congrats J! Nice new shootin' iron.

My main squeeze for years, everything you could want in a 22, good score. I will say a power custom hammer is worth every dime. Chris

i have a marlin 880 .22lr i would put some better glass on it and mayber a new trigger. the barrel is long and heavy enough ,and i love the stock. this would be my long range gun. then i would get a 10/22 put a red dot and folding stock bolt hand and mag lever
