Somebody talk me out of a Sebenza

How about a chisel ?
This chisel cost more than that ten years ago. It is a hand made (but not custom) Temple Builder's Paring Chisel. High end Blue Paper Steel hardness ~ 64 HRC. but no moving parts. No pivot, no spring or lock . . .
It cut the three inch dove tail joints in this all hand cut cabinet maker's bench.

A Sebenza is not life changing.

That said, they are built so well, that if you appreciate well made items that will last a life time, pick up a used one on the exchange. They are worth trying and owning in my opinion.

That will save you a little up front and you can always resale if they aren't worth the money to you.

You could put the money toward a daughters dance class...a sons hockey league, car payment. A surround sound system, 20 cheaper knives that can do the same job. Why not a surround sound, or gaming system. New chainsaw, lawnmower, vacation, brand new Grill, or smoker, air conditioner. maybe put the money in a savings account in case of emergency......Just kidding, get you a Sebenza. Just don't be let down when all your non knife friends and family could care less when you tell them how cool it is....all they think is.... what i said above. But do YOU!

Dude quit being dramatic and just buy it. If you don’t like it you can sell it for like a $30 loss.

Not really sure how I'm being dramatic but yes, that's probably what's gunna happen. Been watching the classifieds already.

This from a guy who used to wear watches from Walmart and get a new one every year or two. (the watch band replacements cost the same as th watches, $10!!) Then upgraded to a Seiko. Will never wear a watch costing more than $200.00.

To get 80% as good a knife for 20% of the money, look at a Cold Steel Code 4. Light, strong, metal handles with an excellent lock up. Probably as good or a better heat treatment on the s35v blade. Solid knife.

Life s too short to be flipping knives, imo.

I have handled a large Sebenza at a local knife store, and meh, it was well made, but the ergonomics didn't feel right, and the thumb opening didn't align well with my thumb mechanics. Also tried an Olamic 24-7 that day, and also meh; then I tried a PM2 and double-meh. I ended up buying a ZT0462 that day and have been thrilled with it. My advice: try before you buy!

... I don't like metal handles (G10, Micarta, or even FRN for me) and not a fan of the inlay stuff...

I don't like metal handles either. The Alox line from Victorinox is the only exception I can think of.

Yet, I like the Insingo. Go figure...

If I’d seen the posts above from Blues Bender and Quiet, I might have probably capped off my escalating taste in folders in the $100-$175 range. I didn’t and I now own several CRKs and Shiros. It all comes down to what you want to have. Be warned about one thing, though. Once you have one CRK, the probability is strong that your first one won’t be your last and only one. Like Quiet said, the Sebenza is a gateway knife and my experience was that it ignited my taste for high-end folders.

Ok, Ill try properly this time.

Sebenzas are NOT the ultimate knife. They are really damn good, and they really work well, but there is better out there.

They way I deal with stuff like this is MVP, Minimum Viable Product.

Take a sebenza, $600. Find a knife with similar features for maybe 30% of that price and get that. See how it feels. Then if you decide you still want a sebenza, wait until you can find it for 30% off and buy.

That being said, What is the reason you're looking at a sebenza? Is it quality of fit and finish? Smoothness? the name?

edit: I just realized this post reads like a sleep deprived 12 year old's rantings... Only half of that is true right now, your guess which. :p

You can get a Sebenza for around $450, less if you get used.

Sebbies are like Ferraris -- you don't really need one, but they are so beautifully designed and built, they are in a class by themselves.

I'd say get one if you like how they look.

First time I saw a picture of a 21/classic I was sold, I had to have one. Took me some years to pony up tho..

Treat yourself and buy one. That's really what you would be doing.
Then get the membership and post pics. If you purchase 2nd hand you won't lose anything if you end up selling.

Don’t do it.

Too much $$$ for a pocket knife. Won’t do anything a $50 knife can’t do, and they’re not even that rare or collectable yet. :p

Just buy the $15 Sebenza-inspired Sanrenmu and be done with it if you like the style so much. Just don't tell the morality inquisition of this forum lol.
