Obviously, you've all forgotten the movie Predator or you would know exactly what that is. :p

We don't live in the woods anymore. So anything strange seems malign. But there was a time we would have accepted many of these mysteries as spirits dwelling in the world alongside us, some of which were noble and many of which were friendly.

When I lived in New York, most of my environment was concrete and blacktop. But I spent time in the parks. As I walked along the streets, I would often reach out and tap the metal poles I passed. Ouch.

Walking through the parks, I would touch the trees, and felt a warmth and a friendliness that made me smile. I began looking for trees with broken branches, and my Swiss Army Knife saw would remove the torn portion, and the blade would trim it smooth. The trees .. appreciated .. this.

Dryads, I think.

Denn die einen sind im Dunkeln.
Und die anderen sind im Licht.
Und man siehet die im Lichte.
Die im Dunkeln sieht man nicht.

Kalama--how old are you Bro??

This could be eye floaters

If there were no tracks---no one was there.

That is a very creepy photo; it looks like a shadow person.

I had an experience in 1988 while traveling Taiwan's northern east-west cross-island highway. A Taiwanese girlfriend "Lisa" and I traveled by combination bus and on foot. We arrived at Hohuan Shan, which is a small ski resort up in the mountains, but it was summer, so no snow. But unlike in other areas of Taiwan at that month, up on the mountain was cold. It's pretty remote, and quite a winding hike up from the highway down below. There was a lodge with a dorm room with bunk beds. There were only about 3 other couples there, who took 3 top beds on the opposite wall. "Lisa" and I took a bottom bed near the doorway at the end of the hallway. There was a lone guy sleeping on a lower bunk way at the other end of the room. If we looked across the room at the other bunks, all we could see of the couples were maybe the bottoms of their feet, if that.

All that day, Lisa had been nervous and said there were spirits around, because there are lots of fatal car accidents on that mountain. There was a car that had apparently fallen about 300 yards down a steep mountain just sitting there near and below the lodge. I've had many experiences in my life, but I thought Lisa was trying to mess with me. Even though the place got a very weird vibe after dark.

As we went to sleep, my last thought was to kinda laugh in my mind at what she was afraid of. I remember at some point suddenly waking, unable to move/completely frozen. I was on my left side, and Lisa slept with her back to me, but she looked like she was at the end of a tunnel. There was an odd, low moaning that had a wavering/vibrating quality to it yelling in my right ear. That moan gradually rose in pitch until it sounded like a very high, elongated woman's scream, vibrating faster and faster. I struggled to move, and it was like my ears were plugged and all I could hear was this screaming in my head. I also had a vision of being inside of a car looking out the windshield as it plummeted and bounced down the mountain. I don't know how long it lasted; maybe about 20 seconds, but it felt like an eternity.

I fought to move, and suddenly the spell was broken and I pushed up. Simultaneously, Lisa pushed up exactly like I did, almost like we were connected by strings. She turned around, shaking, and said, "There was a pressure in the air, and I heard screaming." My ears were still ringing, but the room was dead silent. Everyone else was asleep like they weren't there. I felt a drop of sweat on my face, and the sweat felt ice-cold.

We didn't sleep the rest of the night, instead sitting up and talking quietly. I don't scare easily, so I hate to say that at one point we walked each other to the restrooms and took turns keeping watch for each other in the hallway. The lodge was run by a family who slept way in back, so the whole place was dark and silent. We both knew that something very real had happened. I'll tell you, it's one thing to read or talk about being pressed down by a "ghost" or paranormal entity; it's quite another thing when it actually happens to you. You don't need to believe anything, because you KNOW.

I've had other freaky incidents at other times and places since then, but that was the absolute spookiest.

Kalama that is definitely spooky man.... i probably would have high tailed it out of there too....

It's not uncommon for me to get that chicken skin feeling when I'm out by myself, as I usually am. Especially at night. The mind has a way of playing tricks with you, constructing scenarios from even the smallest bit of stimulation and sensual input. The tiniest sound or movement becomes a dangerous animal, or human, or goblin. It can be unnerving, even when you realize that your mind definitely played a trick. Moonlight reflecting off a wet burly tree stump that in passing looked so much like a face, that sort of thing. Even though you know better, it can be hard to shake the creeped out feeling.

I don't do forested areas very much. I'm more of a desert person. Last time I was out about a month ago, just kicking back enjoying the sights, as the moon was almost full. Once your eyes adjust, it's almost like daylight, you could easily see the terrain, the vegetation, the detail of the mountains in the distance. I made no fire. Rarely do, it would probably blind me to the sights. There was no need for warmth. Not much to burn out there, anyway. Just a small gusty breeze. Enough to make nice background hiss of tumbleweed and creosote bush movement. And I dozed off. A couple hours later, I woke up. The moon had dropped below the distant mountain horizon. The sky was a breathtakingly infinite field of stars, in contrast with the ground and mountains, which were now a featureless black void in the absence of the moon, like a black velvet sheet had been draped over the land as far as you could imagine. The breeze had stopped, revealing a deathly stillness, a quiet that lets you hear your heartbeat, your breath, and nothing more. These moments are magical, under the stars, the occasional blink of a meteor, by myself with my thoughts. Then there's a crunch crunch crunch behind me, I think. I sit up and fumble for the flashlight as I hear it again, crunch crunch, like boots walking overt he rocky soil. What could that be? It sounded close, maybe fifteen yards away. But the flashlight revels nothing, no movement, no animal, no person. Nothing. I could swear it sounded like two feet. Not a coyote. And heavier, too. By now, I'm amped up and hyper sensitive to every possible sensation around me, even though the most notable thing about my surroundings is the lack of sensations.

I think I may have heard it again about an hour later. Much farther away. Maybe 100 yards? I can't be sure. Maybe my brain is just fooling me? The only notable sensation that night was an owl passing maybe ten feet above me, just a large, silent, bird-shaped silhouette under the stars on the lookout for a rodent.

I didn't sleep the rest of the night. Just stared at the Milky Way until it faded away to the glow slowly rising from the east. The breeze kicking up again was somehow reassuring, as if to drive away the mystery sound of just a few hours before. The return of normalcy, the transition from the shadowy netherworld to waking life. What was it? An animal? Sounded like a biped. A man? Way out here, at that time, in that dark, able to come so close, so silently, except for the few telltale footsteps? And depart just as stealthily? I'll never know.

don't have a lot of bigfoot sightings in HI, but that's what first came to mind. http://bfro.net/GDB/
had a few throwing rocks at me and a buddy about a month ago.

how comfy are those tabi boots? (wow, i feel a little mall ninja asking that)

That's a creepy story for sure! Reminds me of late nights in the shop listening to Art Bell.

BTW, shadow people usually wear a hat.

Either it was big foot or you smoked the wrong cigar....That is kinda freaky and that is a great example of why to carry in woods...Glade you were prepared.

2001-10-26 a banker named Lee (30 yrs old )went for a hiking with 3 friends in a mountain in centeral Taiwan, he was missing in the returning trip. after 4 months, people found his body next to waterfall and very very far away from the location where he hike.

His friend send this this photo to the police and post on news paper. the photo was taken before Lee enters the hiking trail, he was the first person entered trail. it should not have anyone standing on top of the trail but the photo shown someone (or an object ) was there, newsworker had enlarge the photo and found the object is a female looking doll because the head and face did not look like a human being.

p6-13.jpg

The Doll very similar like this - Gold boy and Jade girl - underworld servant for funeral .

The Lee's families told police that many faimly members have a same dream about an old man with a young lady invited them for disscusion of marriage deal to the Lee and that lady while Lee was missing.

Lee now became the Son in law of that mountain.

well doc im in the woods about 3-4 time a week i live next to it,im 38 yrs old an yep i got spooked,it happens rarely, its funny but almost everyone here believes in supernatral things its been like that since i was young,,,as for the tabis i like them i use the flat ones for tracking or bow hunting,an when we use the dogs i use the spiked ones, there light ,an you can scale river rocks like spide,,,aloha

Good story Kalama  and Vance - please let me know what area that picture is from so I can stay away :)

I have experienced similar...when I was in high school, I was out on a date one night and my girlfriend and I were parked on the end of a dirt road, out in the middle of nowhere. We sat for awhile and talked and stuff, and then it came time for me to take her home. It was a chilly night, so I jumped back in the driver's seat to crank the car and get some heat going to get the windows unfogged. As I cranked the car, I hit the brakes and just happened to glance at my side view mirror. There was the figure of a large person, standing right beside my rear fender, who was wearing bib overalls - I slammed the car in first gear and hit the gas as fast as I could....and found the headlight switch after hitting second. Needless to say we did not go back there. Still makes the hair on my neck stand up when I think about it

Have had other unrelated experiences in the mountains of NC - that's why I pack now

Thats some spooky stuff Kalama, now i dont go around carrying a gun so if that happened to me i would have high-kneed it out of there ASAP!

Vance, thats some pretty creepy stuff and the worse part is that its right in the middle of a backyard!!!!

Ive never had anything like that happen to me, sure ive heard noises and seen shadows move around my camp, but being in the wilderness it has always been hungry mice, curious foxes and so forth. Or thats what ive been telling myself all this time...

I have a few questions for you.

Did it almost have an electrical feel to it?
And were you totally paralized, and had the feeling that someone was doing it to you?
like being held agains't your will?
And when the sounds stopped, did it almost feel like something snaped in you?

Also, im not trying to be weird or anything, but have you ever had the feeling that there was am elastic band from your feet to the bottom of your neck, and it was being picked in the middle?

I've had very vivid sensations like the ones you explained when things have happend in my life, and to be honest, they were terrifying.

I remember one time, I was laying down beside my girlfriend, and I think I must have just dosed off. I remember waking up, everything on my body being paralized. My Jaw was locked shut, and was tighting more and more. Then, I felt something forcing my jaw open, and I had the odd sensation that something was controlling my movments, then my head was forced to the left, towards my girl friend. I tried yelling to her, but all I could do was whisper very silently. I was try as hard as I could so scream to her, then in seconds, I heard that loud noise, I didnt associate it with screaming, but it could have been. Then, just a crack, and I was awake, but when I woke up, I would up yelling her name. It was odd, because as far as Im conserned, I was awake when it all happend, I just woke up and was still in the same position but then her name just blurted out of me.

The whole time, I felt allmost like I had an electrical charge or something, its was the worst thing that has ever happend, very dishearting.:(

Sounds like a sleep paralysis. It happens to me.
