Southard flippers are available...

So yes, I will be "disgruntled." I will be as "disgruntled" as I can be. Perhaps if I'm "disgruntled" enough, and enough other lefties are "disgruntled" enough, we could show that there is, in fact, a market for higher end knives made for lefties.

In the improbable event that Spyderco did, in fact, make a left handed version, it is unlikely that you would actually see a difference in price for the right handed version. Perhaps the left handed version would be a bit more expensive, but if they are running CNC programs to make knives, it wouldn't really cost a whole lot extra to just mirror the program to make it left handed. You can seen an example of this in the (now discontinued) left handed Spyderco Military. On some websites it is actually cheaper than a right handed version--likely a combination of the dealer's desire to get rid of something that isn't in high demand, as well as the knife having a similar enough cost to a right handed Military.

Not to pick on you Cynic but I thought this was kind of ironic. You cite the example of the discontinued and ,"Can't give them away" lefty Military to make your point that Spyderco should cater to a small minority of knife buyers who are left handed. Why would they make more left handed stuff if it's just going to end up in the clearance bin.

Being "disgruntled" won't do any good unless the demand is there when they actually release a left handed product. I wonder what percentage of left handed people look for left hand specific knives? How many left handers are making due with right handed models because they are used to adapting to right handed everything else from computers to power tools?

Yup. This is why I said it was unlikely. Current demand does not appear high enough to justify making a left hand version of the knife.

Note, though, the "current" in that sentence.

Being "disgruntled," and being "disgruntled" loud enough, could encourage more lefties (who seem to have come out of the woodwork in this thread) to speak up. Both Nutnfancy (for all the gripes I may have about him) as well as Cutlerylover have recently posted videos talking about manufacturers and marketing departments listening to customers.

Lefties are customers too. CRK makes left handed knives, Spyderco used to (until they discontinued the left handed Military), and Lion Steel makes left handed versions of their knives.

How many left handers are making due with right handed models? Maybe enough to encourage a few lefty version runs. Hopefully.

Don't worry Cynic you're not alone here...

I am also of the mind that if it isn't left-handed, I won't buy it. I have owned quite a few right-handed knives and made due with them for a while until I actually got a true lefty and I haven't looked back since. I sold off almost every knife I had that was a right-handed liner or frame lock and now I mostly just buy customs.

While it is a great knife and an awesome collaboration, it is pricey and for that price I can have someone make me exactly what I want. While I am disappointed I will not be able to purchase this beautiful piece, it doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother some right-handed people when we even mention our displeasure. I love flippers but I don't love right-handed locks, not anymore. Can I manipulate one? Sure I can, just fine in fact but that doesn't mean I will buy another right-handed lock regardless of who made it. I've adapted to a whole lot over the years, I play guitar right-handed, I use a mouse right-handed, I have even used right-handed scissors but in this case I'm not willing to compromise. To those lefties that are willing to, enjoy it, I don't want to take anything away from your happiness.

It is just a personal choice that I have made and it actually saves me a lot of money in the long run.

Having said that, if Spyderco did make a sprint run of lefties, I would buy it in a heart-beat!!!

Unless the folder has a thumbstud only on one side and is the only convenient way of opening a folder, I don't find the righty vs lefty issue that big of a deal personally. A couple of years ago, I developed tendonitis on a couple of fingers in my right hand where I couldn't even hold a knife tight enough to cut my food. Being right handed, it became almost impossible to deploy any of my folders with my dominant hand. I still carried my knives though, and with the exception of 2 knives (single lug seb and kershaw avalanche), I found that it wasn't hard at all to use my left hand to open and unlock the rest of my knives. Some right handed spydercos like the PPT are easier to open using the middle finger flick with my left hand, and very difficult to do with my right even after my tendonitis went away because the lockbar partially covers the spyderhole. Looks to be the same case with the Southard. I'll just finger-flick with my left, and use my thumb for my right.

Checking back in on this one. The lock is on the wrong side for left handed people. Holes follow locks.

There are at least a half dozen nice spydies I'll never buy because there are no left handed versions. (other brands too)

The 10% need to say - I'M LEFT HANDED, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE!

Heads up Cutlery shop has the pre order back up I just placed a order FYI it is not in the Preorder section it is mixed with the other Spyderco knives

The DPx HEST folder was offered in a lefty-version right from the start as well.

As much as Spyderco is open to being lefty-friendly I see no reason to fault them when they aren't. It's not practical to offer all models in left-handed versions. I will say that as an industry, the knife world is much more accommodating with both opening hardware and clip mounting points than they were even 6-7 years ago. Which is good, because like a lot of lefties, if I can't carry it and open/close it in a natural way I won't buy it. Every year when I go to the BLADE show I cross off several potential purchases after handling them and finding them less than ergonomic for a left-handed person.

You cite the example of the discontinued and ,"Can't give them away" lefty Military

And just how many years did it end up being in production? IIRC the original plan was a small run with potential for regular production, turns out it sold well enough to last for 3 years? I ordered my second-one just to stock up when I saw they were being discontinued. If I could have afforded it I would have bought a third as well.

I was a bit disappointed to see that it is hollow ground, rather than flat ground, but I ordered anyway.

Manufacturers need to know lefties want left handed versions. All the right handed people claiming we are whining is hilarious. You get to choose from almost every knife out there with never a thought about whether or not it will work for your dominant hand.

Spyderco made one left handed model. I own a lefty military as I'm sure many other lefties do. We don't get a choice of super steels or anything. Think about how you would feel if left handedness was dominant and you had to put up with everything being backwards for you and when you voice your concern you get told to shut up and deal with it and to stop whining. Imagine that.

It's tiresome to see right handed people trying to silence us when we voice our concern. This is a forum. If you don't like my post then skip it and don't respond.

Spyderco makes many back locks and a few ball locks, those are all lefty friendly.

Dear Spyderco Please incorporate a black dlc type of pocket clip on this model.

you can rub it with rubbing alcohol to clean it then soak the clip in PCB etchant to turn it grey if you want.

Anyone have pictures of blade thickness?

Nice!!! Just placed my order, excellent price too might I add. Now the waiting game begins.

If you've seen blade thickness of the tuff, it has identical blade stock thickness to that. Makes me want one more to have another robust blade.

didn't want to since I cannot afford it right now, but placed a preorder for the southard.

Haha! Ditto here. "Shouldn't have, but did it anyway"

I originally dismissed it because from the video it looked like it was going to be way too big. But looking at the specs now, it is spot on my favorite size. Closed length is the same as a Stretch, Yo2, or Cento3 (114mm, 4.5"). But the edge length is like a Chokwe! 10mm longer edge than a Para2 while having a .25" shorter handle. Love it!
