SPAMarama!

I knew this was coming! But why did you have to make a challenge? I've never sliced Spam thin. Usually slices of 1/3 to 1/2 inch, sometimes I dice it to mix with eggs. But a challenge is a challenge--I will try it. Sometime this weekend, assuming I receive my knife on schedule tomorrow.

But I have a question, Rachel: did you eat the Spam? I know it's not kosher. Just curious.
I just thought a challenge would be fun, but feel free to slice it any way you like and post pictures.:thumbsup:

I did not eat the SPAM. I haven't kept kosher since I was 12, when my family moved to Texas, but I just don't much like ham, and it smelled like not-good ham. If I fry those thin slices crispy will it taste like bacon? I do eat bacon sometimes. :) Also, I bought a can of regular flavor in addition to the Lite version, in case I wanted to do a comparison.

I'm going to try the thin slices. Probably wouldn't taste like bacon, though. Bacon is my FAVOURITE pork product, but I usually brown a thick slice or two of Spam in a skillet and eat it with eggs (with plenty of Tabasco sauce). With some black coffee and a glass of whole milk, it makes a great breakfast. Sometimes I grill two slices for a sandwich. It's good with cheese. I even made it with peanut butter once, and loved it. My family thought I was crazy. Well, they do anyway.
Hoping to get the knife tomorrow and will post pics soon!

I glaze my Spam occasionally with maple syrup.
After it's got that crispy outside pour a bit of syrup on top, flip occasionally, and allow it to caramelize nicely.
If you're doing it in cast iron you'd better know what you're doing or you'll be chiseling it off the bottom.
I use non-stick for this one.

My grandfather used to make us lettuce, mayo, and fried Treet (SPAM's less famous cousin) sandwiches when I was a kid. I still get a hankering for them from time to time.

I suspect cardboard would taste better, but I'm willing to try the regular flavor.

If there's a way to barbecue it...;)
Hey Rachel,
Do they still have the Spamorama celebration and cooking contest in Austin?
When I lived there in the early 80's it was a BIG annual party. I was a judge one year. I still retch a little bit thinking about it.
My team won 3rd place the year after with Spam popsicles.--Yum!!--KV

Get real, Sliverama:

They stopped in 2007, but it was revived this year. I've never been, but it might be worthwhile just for the polka music. :D
I never had thinly sliced Spam, but now that I think about it; a pile of fried thinly sliced Spam, stacked on some good rye, topped with a slab of really good Swiss cheese, would make a tasty sammich.
Add some sauerkraut & Russian dressing, and you have the world's least kosher Reuben sandwich!
