SPAMarama!

My Forum knife was delayed today :( (maybe tomorrow) but we're having Spam for dinner tonight. I told my wife of this Spam-a-Lot thread and she decided we haven't had it in a long time. She asked that I share her secret recipe with all of you.
4 whole potatoes
4 carrots
1 head of cabbage quartered
1 can of Spam whole
boil 30-40 minutes
enjoy
Since refrigerated Spam has been ruled out of the thin slice contest I'm assuming boiled Spam is ruled out as well. ;)
 
So I went into town in search of Turkey Spam ( I don't eat pork .... neither does my dog :D )
My search was fruitless :(
However, I brought home some corned beef and to my delight I found out that this knife is indeed able to cut it and it does it very well ! :D ( well ... sort of ... corned beef is a crumbly sticky mess :) )

No rules against refrigerated SPAM. It's just that I'd promised to photograph the first slice, so once I started cutting I didn't want to go refrigerate it and start over.
Does boiled SPAM get harder or softer? o_O

My two Labradors go over in the field & eat horse turds, so I pretty much ignore their opinion on what's good to eat & what's not.:)
 
Way back last Spring, when the choices for the 2019 Bladeforums Traditional Knife were being decided...the many, many polls and discussions were in full swing and there was mention of SPAM. A certain member was concerned about the slicing ability of a heavy stock blade with a sabre grind. Could it even slice SPAM without wedging itself, would the slices be wavy?

So, I promised that the first thing I'd cut with my new forum knife would be SPAM.

While waiting the long months for our knives to arrive, the topic of SPAM came up a number of times. Some of us love the stuff, some hate it, and some of us (me) had never tried it. Many folks said they were planning to test their knives on it, while others expressed doubt that we would sully such beautiful knives on such humble meat. The knife even earned the nickname "Splicer", a portmanteau of SPAM and Slicer. Its real name: Barehead Sailors Rope Knife was a surprise to some of us, but it's a good name too.

My knife came today (a day early. Thank you, @knifeswapper and USPS.) I touched up the edge on some fine ceramic rods and got to SPAM slicing:

I say it passes the test. I challenge anyone to make thinner, straighter slices. Or more creative carvings. Please post photos of your splicer and SPAM!

Great thread r8shell! When I was growing up there was only one "version" of Spam. Now there are an almost bewildering variety. Great looking knife and looks like it does a great job on Spam.

I've mentioned that I just never developed a taste for ham, and this stuff smells like not-good ham, also I have an aversion to gelatinous food, but I figured after starting this thread I had to try some SPAM. So I opened the can of original flavor and cut the thinnest slices I could, and fried them until crispy with eggs.

Very salty and crunchy, so kinda like bacon. I'd call it edible. :thumbsup:
I also experimented with desiccating a few slightly thicker slices in the air fryer I just got as an early Hanukkah present. (the irony is not lost on me) ;) Also edible, but I feel the need to go drink about a gallon of water now.
 
I think my first taste of spam was growing up as a young feller in Texas when we would buy surplus army food from the army surplus store when we went camping and fishing. SPAM came in olive drab green cans. We had a lot of it. I still like it and I think it’s one of the Texas major food groups.
 
I assume you are talking about Austin, Texas. This is a little ironic, because there is a small town in SE Minnesota named Austin. It is the home of a large Hormel facility, and the SPAM MUSEUM. I have been there and it is cool. A giant pyramid of Spam cans, a large gift shop, a framed original letter from General Eisenhower from Europe during the Battle of the Bulge, thanking Hormel for free tons of Spam for the VERY grateful troops, etc., etc. Trivia: Spam is the most popular where? Hawaii! My new bride and I spent our honeymoon camping out of my old farm truck in western Montana in 1986. We took Spam because bacon is so messy. Well... we never ate Spam again until this last year. I plan to do another can in 2020.View attachment 1252398

The Spamarama is held in Austin, Texas. Spam is made in Austin, Minnesota. Sheer coincidence, as far as I know, but there was some legal wrangling when Hormel Foods found out about it.
