I've been looking at the Harsey and it just looks sick. I was planning on picking up a new ZT 0620 CF this week but now I'm seriously considering the Harsey.

What are your thoughts and opinions on the Spartan Harsey and the ZT 0620 CF ? I realize there's a big price difference between the two.

Too expensive.

Awesome, but too expensive.

I kinda agree, but I also disagree given that it's a large 4"+ folder. There are many other knives with similar materials/origin/construction/price, but are under 4".

Bottom line, if you're looking for a large 4"+ folder, I think the SHF will be a strong candidate.

I wouldn't agree that exclusivisty justifies a $500 price point. Why price it outside of the range of almost anyone who would want to use the knife? It seems like a poor choice, but I am not a businessman... and they seem to be doing well, so my opinion is moot.

At $460 , I am a bit hesitant to pull the trigger on the Harsey. After all , the ZT 0620CF is $240 and I'd prob be just as happy with that.

But I still want it.

It is no secret that Spartan blades are expensive. I know all too well. The knife looks great but I am not a fan of all metal/Ti handles. Stupidly as I write this I realize I just bought this:

Still though, the Harsey is not on my list.

Although the Spartan Harsey Folder is a great big all-titanium folder there's also the Fantoni HB01 which is a similar Harsey designed folder. Fantoni HB01 is a titanium liner lock and very stout. The regular version is S35VN & G-10 but there's also a model with M390 & CF. Very high-quality build from Italy.

How I see it, is that Spartan is a small shop (like CRK/Hinderer) rather than a larger production manufacturer. I could be wrong, but I would imagine that their production volume is lower than some of their competitors, hence the higher price (or competitive, depending on how you look at it).

Looks a lot like a (Harsey-designed) Lone Wolf from the good old days. Anything he does has class. I don't know how many they'll sell at those prices. RamZar has a point, though. Fantoni should advertise more.

Craytab, how you like the Pallas? I keep mine handy. Outside of government buildings. :)

I really like the SHF, especially since there isn't anyone to take care of my Lone Wolf T2 if anything happens to it. It might seem silly, but I actually plan to get one of the SHF's to take into the field, rather than the T2 (the T2 has wood handles).

The only thing that has kept me from pulling the trigger so far is the fact that the only choices are all black, or all stonewashed metal. I don't like black blades, and I don't like plain metal handles. I like there to be a contrast between the blade and handle, especially when there is such an excellent blade/handle ratio. If I could just get a SHF with a black handle and plain blade I would buy it tomorrow. Though my dream would be for a SHF with the FDE(ZRN) coating for the blade, then it could match my Difensa. Sadly I am under the impression (from Bill) that an FDE version is not currently in the pipeline.

Having had a chance to handle a few, I definitely like them and look forward to owning one, but for now I am waiting. Spartan can't seem to keep them in stock right now, so I don't think they are in any hurry to change anything, and they did just win American Made Knife of the Year at BLADE, but for that price I want what I want.

I love it. The button lock is addictive and the noise it makes is awesome. It is already super smooth but it is supposed to get more smooth with time.

I will check out Fantoni tonight. I've never heard of them.

I have the HB02, which is the smaller version of the HB01, and it is a very good knife. I'd put the fit and finish up against just about anything. I actually own several Fantoni made knives (they used to make knives for other labels, like Lone Wolf, Falcon, and Beretta) and they are all excellently made.

The ZT 0620 CF has 204P and the Harsey has S35VN. I've never tried out 204P. I wonder if I'd even be able to tell the difference between the two steels.

These are the two knives I'm deciding between. Big price difference.

I have a ZT 0562cf in 204P. Used it a fair bit. Only thing I have done is touch it up a bit with a ceramic rod. I have a lot of Spartan S35vn. Used it about the same. However, I have re-profiled a few Spartans with their S35VN. Not difficult but not exactly easy either.

I don't think I would consider the steel a big factor in the decision. You want what you want. Don't settle. Life is too short. It's only money :D

I have also been eyeing the SHF since I recently picked up an Akribis and was pleased with it. I like the SHF, but like others, the price is just a bit high, IMO.

Warranty may also be a factor. I haven't heard a lot about Spartan blades, but they don't manufacture their own knives...so if/when the model is discontinued you may have issues with parts, replacements, or general repairs. There was a recent bad review on their CS on the Modern Neanderthal podcast this past week where they said they could not guarantee repair of a lock issue on an Akribis. ZT however has you covered...

That handle looks very rmd like, and I love the rmd handle.

Used it to help skin a 500lb hog this morning, I will say the handle was slick with fat and blood covering it.

The winklers rubber handles really shined through out the process.

Love them both!

What do you mean Spartan doesn't manufacture their own knives? I am unfamiliar with any definition of manufacture that does not cover Spartan. I'm pretty sure that doing everything from blanking and milling to finishing and shipping in house counts as manufacture (although, the hand ground special editions where the grinding steps are done by custom makers obviously is an exception ).

I haven't seen the bad review you cite, but I have heard them complain about being asked to service counterfeits. I have not needed anything from them fixed myself, but I have certainly found Spartan responsive and helpful.
