Spartan Harsey Folder & ZT 0620 CF

What do you mean Spartan doesn't manufacture their own knives? I am unfamiliar with any definition of manufacture that does not cover Spartan. I'm pretty sure that doing everything from blanking and milling to finishing and shipping in house counts as manufacture (although, the hand ground special editions where the grinding steps are done by custom makers obviously is an exception ).

I haven't seen the bad review you cite, but I have heard them complain about being asked to service counterfeits. I have not needed anything from them fixed myself, but I have certainly found Spartan responsive and helpful.

I believe they don't do titanium in house. I was told they have a guy who does their chopsticks. I don't know about anything else though.

the issue mentioned in the podcast was regarding an Akribis with lockup issues. I just looked on the Spartan website and it states they do use some external manufacturers in their process. The podcast read a response letter from the CS department about one of the hosts having an Akribis with blade play and lockup issues (1:28 into the most recent Modern Neanderthal Podcast). the Spartan CS rep said to send in the knife for a tune-up and resharpening but they could not guarantee a fix for the lockup/ blade play issues. I thought they were made by Millit (They manufacture for many small brands including Koenig and Hawk)....but I cannot find confirmation. Many small manufactures/mid-techs use Millit, Halpern, or Three rivers to do their production. Don't take me to the bank on this as it is heard from another party....but I can guarantee the ZT was made at the KAI USA facility.

Interesting posts so far.

The ZT 0620 CF is waved. I've never used a waved knife before. I'm not too keen on the feature. Would it be much of a problem if I were to NOT have the wave catch on my pocket for instant opening ? I'd prefer to open the knife manually with the thumb studs.

Not much of a problem. Just don't press the spine of the blade against your pocket when taking it out. Might take a bit of adjustment but not much.

We have been carrying the Harsey Folder for a while and I can say it is on my short list. Incredibly well made and there is good reason it just won American Made Knife of the Year at Blade Show. Both the ZT and the Spartan are great knives. I like my ZT's and I like my Hinderer's and I am sure I will like my Harsey Folder when I get one. They are definitely different though. People try to compare the 2 but if you carry one or the other for more than a couple of weeks you will start to notice all the little differences.

Also interesting side note. The blade length per Spartan, which all sellers use, is 4 inches. When I measure it though I am coming in at least 1/8th under that.

Here is a pic of both for you. Hope it helps.

Pics always help! Thanks!

The SHF looks fantastic in this pic. You can really see the differences.

That's a great pic. And it definitely helps. They both look really nice. But the look of the Harsey just calls to me. The ZT is sweet too but right now I'm leaning toward the Spartan. And being the American knife of the year winner certainly helps.

I am not in the market for either but I hear you. The SHF wins that visual match-up for me. No doubt.

Just out of curiosity , what are some alternatives to the Spartan Harsey that are similar in materials , quality , size and price ?

I guess in a nutshell I'd be asking for a sub $500 titanium frame lock (non-flipper) of Spartan-like quality.

I've been looking at customs and most of what I've seen are well over $500.

Well man, why even bother to pass on possibly untrue 2nd hand information? This is the internet, we must only have the truth.

I like Spartan blades a lot. I didn't have a use for most of the few I owned, but I still miss them. The Ares and the V-14 dagger really stood out as fantastic pieces, I just don't need weapon only oriented knives at this time.

I think that Harsey folder could have a place in my line up though. The Phrike looks handy as well.
Best of luck.

I have said that the Spartan Harsey folder almost comes off like a Chris Reeve/Hinderer Collaboration knife. While non flipper Hinderer Knives are rare they are out there. The Sebenza is also another great choice. There are many others as well, those were just the first 2 to come to mind.

Many others ? Cool , what else ya got ?

Assuming you're looking for a titanium frame lock folder without a flipper with a blade length of 3.5"-4" and an under $500 dealer street price?

The usual suspects from CRK, Strider and Hinderer.

  • Olamic Wayfarer 247
  • Walter Brend Marauder
  • Todd Begg Steelcraft Kwaiken
  • Reate Horizon-Ti
  • LionSteel SR-1 Ti
  • Aegis Hoplite

There are also some with subframe lock.

Niiiice. I will check these out. Thank you !

Unfortunately , most of these suggestions are flippers. I'm after a non-flipper. But I appreciate the thought.

Many of the ones I mentioned including CRK, Strider, Hinderer, Olamic 247, etc. can be opened manually without a flipper.

Is it true that Hinderer currently makes only flipper models ?

Does Chirs Reeve do all his own titanium machining in-house ?

Yes, CRK does.

If you are looking into this type of knife and you have not bought a CRK you are doing yourself a huge disservice. In the least, buy a used one on the exchange, check it out, and if it is not what you want, sell it for little to no loss.

I have an Umnumzaan that I bought used from a friend of a friend. And even though it's older and a tad beat up , it performs great. It's one of my work knives.

The Sebenza 21 I had , I sold. At the time , it just wasn't what I was looking for. But times and tastes change.

Then I just saw a Medford Praetorian today on YT and it looks outstanding. But at $600-$700 I'll prob stay away. But now I'm all over the map. I'm prob going with the SHF. Looks so nice.

Everything you keep saying sounds like the SHF is the way to go. I really do not think you will be disappointed. Considering it is a full ti knife and a Mid Tech the price on it is well worth it. Would love your feedback if you do get one.
