Spartan SHF Pic Thread. Let’s See ‘Em!

I always liked this one
Yeah, me too, Chuck. This was definitely not something I needed (or really should have spent the $ on) but I'd so admired this version from the time I first laid eyes on one that I couldn't resist when it was offered to me. The chance to own a second knife in Magnacut was a factor as well as the obvious attraction of it's laser etching and anodizing. The thing that surprised me was that all that fine decorative work actually adds a discernible tactile grippiness to the feel in hand. This is one of those that I have a hard time setting aside after a day's carry.

Factory custom, PVD coating with blue hardware. Big shout out to Rachel for this, I didn't even know it was possible when I first called. What a great company and what a great knife!

I really *want* to like these, but I just can't get there still for the following reasons:

1. Really sharp corners, especially on the inside of the liners/lock. I've heard they may have corrected this? Can anyone confirm?

2. The blade shape looks like it can't decide if it wants to be a clip/bowie point or a drop point. The swedge further muddies the waters for me.

3. The shape of the butt end of the handle looks awkward and weird to me....like they weren't sure what to do so they did "something".

4. The cutting edge stopping so short of the plunge lines looks really messy and not as useful as it could be. I realize this is a contested issue but I'd prefer a choil there.

I do really like the themes and designs of the handle engravings and etchings. Some of the best out there, IMO.

They are a bit polarizing, but they fit my hand well, and aren't too sharp on the edges for this set of office worker hands. And as you said, they are beautiful! I think I still have 7 or 8, I did trade a couple away a while back that didn't get as much drool time 😂. My favorite handle is the Koi fish, it's one of the few they have done in stonewash under the anodizing and the handle looks and feels amazing!PXL_20241018_214605650.jpg

I 100% get what you mean. I have often felt that they need a "bar of soap" treatment. They are hard and angular in a lot of ways.

The blade shape is very much a jack of trades for me. It's not my favorite but is useful regarding the design of being a hard use knife that can fit a lot of roles.

I will never accept that unfinished edge as a feature and not a bug. It's aggravating. I don't even use guided sharpeners like some, but feel sharpening a SHF is a bit of a bitch. I have gotten used to it, but it seems silly to not just finish the blade. It reminds me of some of my beloved khukuris...but those are literally beaten out of a piece steel on an anvil on the dirt floor of a shop.

The handle design is top notch and the engraving DEEP. There is not chance 100 years from now someone isn't going to be able to tell what the artist was going for.

The SHF remains one of those knives that I think scratches the itch of a more robust CRK but beyond just really liking mine, I have a hard time going with one over a hard use more budget friendly Cold Steel, tbh.

Case in point, I carried my SHF to a new years eve gathering. I opened some party hats and novelty glasses with it. It would have been handy to have to pry to door off my Honda should the Mrs and I have been in an accident. I mostly carried it because it was nice and looked "cool".

You, Sir, are on a fence.

I suggest you budget a purchase of one and try one out. If it's not for you, part with it.

I love my SHF's. Oh yeah, the grip isn't smooth, but neither are my hands. Sure, they don't have a choil-my hands too. Neither does my Spyderco PM2.

I like the 'unorthodox drop point'.

Yep, you are on a fence.

Buy what you can, use what you can buy.
