Spartan SHF Pic Thread. Let’s See ‘Em!

Geez, I was thinking about putting part of my tax return towards one of these bad boys and I think this thread pushed me over the edge.

Now I've just gotta decide between the plain jane or the full dlc...
Just my personal experience, but the patterned handle ones I have owned had smoother actions than my PJ and PVD out of the box, they all wear in, but there may be a little bit more tuning from the factory that goes into the anodized ones.

😬 Didn't wanna spend more than around $400 initially but some of them patterns spartan does are pretty attractive. Maybe if I find a decent used one I'll take that advice!

Keep an eye on the marketplace, I scored this most recent one for well under $400. Plus with Spartan switching to magnacut, the S45VN models have come down, even on eBay.

Yup..the last 3 I bought were marked way down. One was under 200. It was a store demo but still new. The others ,one was just under 300 and last one was right at 350. They are definitely trying to move um.
Show a little interest and they'll make you an offer you can't refuse. Well,I couldn't anyway. I'm stuck on these blades...

They do their S45 pretty damn good as well. I don’t reckon you lose anything going for the 45 over the magnacut

I don't think that most folks would see much of a difference in performance unless their knives REALLY get used and you could compare them side by side. I will say that I have been super happy with my two Spartans in 45. The SHF comes a bit thick behind the edge. Great for a hard use, drag through the mud knife. Not so great for eating an apple off the blade at my desk. When I sharpened it the first time, I thinned it out just a hair, and it's great. Holds an edge, doesn't deform, and actually cuts well.

I haven't used my Ares much as it leans more into weapon that can be used as a tool territory than the other way around, but they gave it a really nice and proportionally thin edge. So far, so good.

I'm still going to pick up a fancy model toward the end of the year in Magnacut ;) I mean, I'm as much of a knife knut as anyone here. I just don't think I'll be plunking down 400 or 500 bones for something that isn't THAT much different from the PJ SHF in my pocket.

I actually prefer the edge holding of S45VN. Mine came well under the $400 mark too.

It's crazy how steel falls out of favor. S45VN is a premium and high quality steel. I'm jazzed to try out Magnacut on a Spartan, but I wouldn't take a bath on a knife sporting an awesome steel just because the new kid on the block is available.
I'm not complaining, I'm just gonna swim through my pile of cheap SHFs like Scrooge McDuck!

I just received my first SHF, plain model, and I have a question regarding the quality. This is my first experience with this brand so I have nothing to compare it to. I’ve never even held one in hand but the price was too good to pass up (eBay, authorized dealer). Upon receiving the knife, I noticed that the blade is not centered and that the action is rather rough. Also, there is a little bit of front to back blade play. If I push the lock bar further in, this goes away. Are these normal for this knife? Otherwise it looks great and feels great but I feel disappointed as this is the most expensive knife I have but I also don’t want to jump to conclusions in case these are common for this knife.

It was just a bit over two weeks back that I posted this knife here, my most recent SHF, but I've got some spare pics today and this is a good place for 'em. This knife is way up the list of favorites and competes hard for pocket time lately....

I have taken most of mine apart and cleaned them thoroughly and greased with TW25. After that everything is peachy. Is the pivot tight on your example? There is a sweet spot on them where the blade centers and the action is smooth. It will be stiff for a while as it breaks in. Spartan customer service is easy to deal with if you feel like it should go to the mothership, or have the eBay dealer swap it out.

Thanks for the reply! The pivot was extremely tight. I messed with it a bit but to no avail. I don’t have much experience taking apart knives but I will give it a shot. If that doesn’t work I will reach out to Spartan.

Use plastic wrap over the tips of your torx bits to avoid scratches, I Believe the pivot is t15 and the handle screws t10. I usually just open it from the show side scale and leave the spacer screws from the lock side in place

Makes sense, thanks for the tips. I do not have any TW25, but I’ll acquire some and give it a go.

I would imagine any high quality firearm lube or grease would do just fine, I just happen to have a huge tube of TW25 for my P series SIGs, so it's handy.
