Spec Ops 10" interest

I want to get this fired up again. I have had nothing but good luck with the 6" and 8" sheaths from these guys. I think we can fit many of the bigger choppers into one size of these. People can modify the sheath to fit from there. I was able to cram a Scrapyard SOD into the 8" so I know we can fit at least .25" thickness knives into the standard kydex liner they use. Spec Ops was very excited about doing this when I talked to them. They were just waiting on a confirmation of size. They would be able to supply the junkies with these as well as deployed troops. Once we get a good consensus on size I will proceed.

By my estimation these knives would fit a larger sheath with about 11.5 or so inch liner.

Busse Basic 11
Busse Bushwhacker Mistress
Busse CGFBM and LE
Busse FFBM might fit with some effort
Busse NMFBM might fit LE and thicker NMFBM with some effort

Swamp Rat Rat Mastiff
Swamp Rat Rat Daddy-LE and CG
Swamp Rat M9LE and CG
Swamp Rat Battle Rat CG and LE
I am not sure what the battle guard looks like but the length is right and would probably work.

Scrap Yard Dogfather CG and LE

Let me know what you think and thanks for the help.
Zach

I think that it is a great idea.

As to the sizes you may need different insert thicknesses:
Basic 11, CGFBM and CG NMFBM will all fit a .25 insert great.
A CG BWM is going to rattle around a lot in a .25 insert.
The FBM LE and the FFBM at .34ish are both going to be needing a thicker insert I would bet if they even fit at all since they are beasts.
A .27 FBM or the NMFBM LE might fit into the .25 insert ok though if you don't care about scratches at all.

I agree make it with different size inserts. I have a FFBM and it would be great to have a sheath maker that offered an insert for blades thicker than
.250. If the inserts were made for .250 thick blades but folded with overlapping seams so the owner could heat them and re-form for a thicker blade that would work also. I just bought two sheaths from LMI and re-formed one to fit my FFBM. It was easy to do because the inserts are removable. Also make it so it fits up to a 12 inch blade.

I'm in
I already have 5or6 of there sheaths and I use the same size liners on mine and I just heat them up to fit thicker or thinner from .33 and thinner even my sfno but that is tall so it took more work to make it fit so a wide 12" sheath would be nice

There is no comparison in the quality of the Special Ops sheath that I have and the Lost Mtn. sheaths I just received. Lost Mtn quality is so much better and also include kydex liners, instead of the plastic that comes in the SO sheath.

Also, Lost Mtn is already up and running on the size you are looking for. The Foot Long will fit NMFBM and B11, and the Holmes will fit a Dogfather LE and Battle Rat.

The sheaths I received from LM also included an extra kydex liner.

Just my $.02

If we could keep this to interest in a larger spec ops sheath I would appreciate it. This is not a one sheath better than the other thread at this point. Spec Ops is interested in making quality USA made sheaths to fit a range of knives. Not just Busse. I am looking for sizes and knives that will fit.

Thanks,
Zach

I like spec ops stuff dont get me wrong... and id probably get one even-but they are late to the game. Not sure either fit exactly... but, As a few others mentiond... LMIW makes really nice stuff and they seem real nice to deal with. I have a footlong and a "JOHN HOLMES" on order with them now. After seeing that specops only has the smaller ver, I researched LMIW, and again, they already have what your looking for and it looks sweeeet. never heard a bad thing in fact. Gotta love the name too- JOHN HOLMES. It kinda ses it all!

Sorry Man - Just wanted to set the record straight - So you can probably ascertain that I'm not in for a SO sheath

I'm definitely in for one that fits my CGDF.

As an aside tundratrader, do you have pics of your SOD in the 8" sheath?

So this looks like great interest. Just like kydex we have many players.
IMHO the stitching and construction of these is flawless. They are able to satisfy all orders and are continually improving the product. They are USA made sheaths These sheaths have been in use in Iraq since the start. The SOD pictured here was sent just for that purpose. Many top shelf makers choose this brand above others. Chris Reeve puts the greet beret into this. Strider has been know to do the same. Rick Hinderer sell the fieltac with this sheath. So on and so on. The military likes spec ops and the is what they will get. Almost every knife I own has mashed cat kydex. F
Here are the Spec Ops I have or have had.

1. NMSFNO 8" combat master

2. SOD 8" combat master

3. S5CG the sheath is 6" combat master.

Zach,
Can you please specifically state exactly what it is that would make a Spec Ops sheath better than something already available from LMIW? Is there something that makes Spec Ops a better quality sheath or do they have a better warranty? As I see it, they are both closely priced, USA made, and use the molle straps. LMIW is available now and--I know this is just personal preference--I prefer the way the LMIW pouch closes to just plain velcro on the Spec Ops. Don't get me wrong. I know the Spec Ops is a great sheath used by many custom makers, but for folks in the market for a sheath, why should they choose Spec Ops over LMIW? Brand loyalty? Something else? Thanks in advance for your insight. I may be interested. :)

Wow, my previous post is a mess. I probably should not be posting from the back of the ambulance.

The spec ops sheath and LMIW works are similar in a few ways. They are both cordura type nylon with a plastic insert. Spec Ops uses a tube insert and LMIW uses a folded kydex insert. The LMIW insert is designed to be wrapped in paracord and then inserted in the pouch. I think alot of guys are using these as little bug out bags. If you don't have the insert wrapped it is a very sloppy fit inside the outside sheath. To heat form the kydex for lost mountain you have to cut down the insert and reform into a taco style sheath. I think it is designed this way to grab the blade. I had a few LMIW sheaths and the stitching was sloppy IMO. The two outside pouches on the LMIW are really nice but it is a little much for me. I like the simplicity of being able to carry just a flashlight or a multitool. They offered a pouch or two straps but when they were swamped with orders they decided to streamline into one style. I like the Spec Ops having the retention strap adjustable and higher up. Having adjustable velcro is the only way to go with the wide range of knives that could potentially be sheathed. The way the belt/molle straps are integrated into the Spec Ops also give you a guide for inserting your knife.

In summary
I like the overall quality of the Spec Ops. I like that it is smaller overall. I understand the concept of having a small bug out unit but if that is all I have with my here in Alaska I am hosed!! I think having the adjustable retention strap is essential it should not be a chicago screw attachment option. It looked like an afterthought to me. My Basic 11 was very loose and I think it would have slipped down to the choil at least with my strap on my LMIW. That just adds weight and leaves room for a screw to get loose.

The last I checked people were still waiting on the first batch of sheaths. Spec Ops wants to make these sheaths for other knives as well in the larger size so it is going to happen regardless.
I feel like the sheaths I got were rushed overall and the affected the quality. Maybe we can get LMIW to adapt some of these ideas and go from there. I didnt feel like rocking the boat until now but these are my thoughts.

Let me know what you think. That is a rant and hopefully reads correctly. It is a pain in the butt typing on my phone. Hopefully I will have a minute at home on the computer tonight.

Charlie and Beth are doing great and are a new company but I think they are in over their head at this point. The last I checked people were still waiting on the first batch of sheaths. but your previous post,

I dont think this thing belongs in the Busse forum,
maybe in the Equipment and Gear section,
especially since your added
"a range of knives. Not just Busse. I am looking for sizes and knives that will fit"

Whatever the case,I will refrain from giving my opinion
of the fantastic, high quality sheaths I received from LMIW. ;)

As Bear stated earlier, count me out on Spec Ops as well.

To clarify my post,
A group buy for a specific sheath for a specific knife would be a great thing,
Im all for saving money and developing needed equipment, however,
Opening this to include "other" brands of knives, even though they may well fit in there isnt a good idea for this forum. (imho)
Also stating your opinion of LMIW after stating you wanted to keep this
from being a "one sheath better than the other "thread
really isnt fair,is it?

I like the basic intent of your thread

It is hard to talk about features of a specific sheath vs another. I am trying like heck to keep this on target. I am really not trying to say anything super negative about the LMIW sheaths mostly just personal preference issues. If others knife brands fit after the fact that is fine. Spec Ops asked about Busse mainly but they want a range of knives to fit.

I will contact them tomorrow and confirm that we have interest. I will consult on a group buy possibility since this is Busse fans organizing this.

I love the Spec-Ops 6" for my Scrapper 5 and M6. I have an 8" otw for my Camp Tramp.

I have my Dogfather in an old ESEE Junglas sheath. It is ok but I would swoop up a Spec-Ops 10" for sure. It would be a welcome addition to thier line up.

I'm interested; would love to have something for my M9. I have the small Spec Ops now for the M6.
