Special Buck 119 special

hi haebbie if you mean the cases with the 124's and 110's they were custom made for me , i got them through harold klinkhamer and it is some kind of hard plastic material that has the cutout areas in it , i am not sure what it is but it is hard and yet i think fairlly scratch resistant and where the blade rests there is two magnets flush with the surface to hold them in place
if you look on the exchange scott hartman has the full set of klinkhamer series 1 bucks for sale , i dont think he says whether the case comes with them or not but i have two cases like that and one for the 124's one for 110's and one for 119's they are nice and well made but expensive

many Thanks, buckman, for Information. It ist a good Idea to fix the knives with magnets. On the pics the surface looks like Foam.

I want to make such cases by myself - a knife-cabinet with many drawers. But not in the next week. First I make a knife. I have a 119-Blade made of damast-steel, and I don' know yet to make the Handle like the other 119 or different. whats your opinion? Anyway it will give another Special Buck 119 Special.

Herbert

Haebbie,
Do you make damast-steel? I am a fairly new maker, please send me phtotos or post them with your progression with the assembly of Special 119 Special.

Hi Herbert,
I would suggest a Nice Stag or Mamoth Ivory to go with your damast-steel.

haebbie
i am with jb
i think stag or ivory would be very nice , but even ironwood or a nice burlwood would probably look good too , i was going to say stacked leather washers but i dont know what that would look like with damascus if you could post a pic i would like to see it both before and after the handle, i have a slabside stag 119 and it is a much nicer knife than the regular handled stag 119 so if you could do that it would be that much nicer also
if you read many of my posts here you will see that i am partial to jigged buffalo so a slabside buffalo with damascus would be very nice imho
jb ballpark is $200

No, Scott, I dont make damast-steel. I bought that Blade at eBay. And as you like, I'll post some pics of the Blade and the progression.

Herbert

jb, buckman,

I'll think about it. But I dont take ivory, I take old bison-bones. They look a bit like ivory, they are very solid and I can't go in trouble with Roy Bean. I also have a good piece of yellow amber I can use as a Spacer. Let's see.

Herbert

yea haebbie that sounds alright , i dont particularly care for yellow but that might look alright
thats the first ive heard of bison before , do you die it or poish or leave it plain ??
ps i will try to take a few pics of the slabside i was mentioning before and post them in a bit

That is the crux of the nearly never used damned scool English. I don't know what you mean. "do you die it or poish or leave it plain" wold you please, buckman, be so kind and declare it to me? Also the therms "jigged" and "slabside"? That wlold be nice.

Herbert

ok haebbie i will try by die i mean coloring it , and i see i mispelled polish which would be buffed smooth as opposed to leaving the grain exposed , and the jigged is the same as routered like if you have seen the pics of the custom 110's one choice is smooth buffalo and the other is jigged i think to resemble impala , and slabside would be two halves fitted to either side of the tang for the handle as opposed to one piece that is hollowed out for the tang to go through i hope i have explained what i meant correctly , if not some of the other guys here can probably explain it better

No, I don't make slapstick ---äh --- slabside. The handle would be drilled and comes around the the the unsharp thing, that is the opposite of the Blade what comes in the grip.

Herbert

Oh I see, you were faster than my translation. I think, now I know what you mean. And in the middle of the grip is the tang, I'm learning th whole time, thank you!!

haebbie can you see the pics i posted ? that is the slabside with wood to fill in between the two sides of the stag as the tang is not the full width of the handle

yes, Buckman I see. I did it also with different woods. The slabsides are dark and the other Wood is white birch. So it looks a bit like a full tang (ist that the right term?). But when it is possible, I try to hide the Tang.

If you take a bison bone, may be from the shinbone of a calv, it has the right Dimension of a grip. but first you have to fill the hole in the middle with epoxy. Then you drill and file the cutout for the Tang.

yea full tang is correct , and the birch sounds good too , and i imagine using the shin bone like you say would make for as strong of a handle as any , when you get a chance post some pics for us please

Okidoki, come here my wife and cook me a bison bone for Lunch, buckman of the Buck-Forum will se a bison bonhandle on a knife and I want to prepare it tomorrow!

Alles klar?

:D

((we had bison leg last week. I hope I can save the bone from the dog))

Here's a pic of the damast 119 blade lying on a first concept for a grip.

Materials are (starting at the blade) Bone, silver, red fiber, silver, amber, silver, red fibre, silver, bone, black locust.

What do you think?

...Haebbie...That blade is beautiful. The drawing of your handle design is a very interesting idea that I like very much. Be sure to let us see pictures of your progress as you make up the handle. Your choices of materials is also very good. Very, very nice...
