A question for you fellow wood inlay owners, especially those who have more than one in your possession:

I have a small Burly maple. The wood on the lock side has several shallow dips in it causing it to be a little wavy. The larger wood inlay on the opposite side is perfectly smooth. Is this common/normal?

Obviously a problem which I would be ashamed to be seen with, save yourself the shame and send it to me, I will hide it for you....

Actually all I have are physically smooth, though optically the may vary almost a 3-d effect....

Tallpaul, It's in the mail...

NOT!!!

Joe:
Any natural material that is used as an inlay can do funny things. That is why most custom makers will not warranty scales made of natural material. Wood, ivory and stag to name a few. Best advice is to call CRK and maybe send the knife back to see what they think. The dips may be a result of you leaning on something like the edge of a table and putting pressure on that side of the knife.

The Box Elder is now and "orphan". I saw my large Maple inlay off to a good home today. I am confident that it will be appreciated and treated in the manner due such a fine instrument.

A young forumite with a great eye and a definite taste for the finer things in life left a great impression (and more than a few dollars) with me. He and his mother have my gratitude and my respect.

He is already beyond his years in knowledge of our craft. If he continues with his interest and remains as dedicated as he is now, he will someday, soon, become an authority in this field and will be one to whom we all can turn for information and advice. It was an honor to have them in my store.

My thanks go out to them.

Although it is a poor picture, here is one I got from TallPaul about 2 months ago. It is pictured with a few of its friends.

Your wood inlay is going to be awesome. Pictures are cool! CRK got me a VIP pass for the Blade Show West! Talked to Bridget and she confirmed that you are getting the Redwood inlay and I am getting the curly maple. Do you have any idea who is the third one getting a lefthand wood? Please post pics of your woodie as soon as you get it and I will do likewise!
Left handers are the only ones in their right mind!

Yup! Yer right. I have truly enjoyed this thread.

All my "woodys" are safely ensconsed in new homes with guardians worthy of such fine instruments.

I am now in the sad position of having to wait for the next batch. However, all of you who have them in hand, keep scanning and shooting and posting. When I have more I'll add them to the stable. These thoroughbreds of the cutlery world deserve a showcase and I can't think of a better one than this.
