Special project Magnacut ???

I wonder who it is.. they have to be a BCCI member and a member here as well...

It's annoying. I've been a BCCI life member since the 80s, and I'm fairly active here, but I still miss out on this stuff. I can't spend all day hitting refresh on a website, I wish there was a better way. The limited numbers available and having to know the secret handshake is one of the things that sours so many people on Great Eastern. It's a shame that Buck does the same damned thing.

Magnacut isn't a passing phase though so Buck will surely aim towards making that a common steel in their lineup. It's still the new hotness even if it's been around a couple of years now.

Frankly you're right in regards that social media influencers get a head start in line and people who grease the wheel. I don't buy GEC just because of that fact as well.

I saw the email and was able to go directly to the Buck site and buy two... could have bought three but thought that would be greedy. Don't forget, Buck has to balance serving the community and selling its product to make a profit and keep the doors open and the employees paid.

I almost bought a couple of the 110s, had em in my cart even. I just couldn't commit with that funky blade shape and thumb stud. Ugh...

I would have bought from ya. that what I really wanted. I love the sport. modern features and convenience without giving up too much. I've been using my magnacut 110 for awhile now. this steel is best Bucks put out yet in a 110 format. so far its been 100% corrosion proof. I know Sal at spyderco has been testing it in his salt tests and it's passed so far. seems to hold a sharper edge better than s30v. so easy to sharpen. tough enough. there is no lose on a 110.

I understand the need to sell product at a profit, but thanks for the lecture on basic marketing. I'm glad you bought two knives, and I hope you enjoy them.

I also know that taking care of their best customers, and those who drive a ton of free, positive buzz about their product can pay big dividends. My money has the same impact on Buck's bottom line as some schmo who's going to turn around and sell at a big profit to himself.

This is not life changing stuff. There will always be a few who benefit because they can live their lives tied to their phones, or have an inside track on these special offerings, or who can travel to a 'Club' event, or can attend a show that's four states away. I know that, I accept that. It doesn't mean that it feels like you're being treated fairly, or that they're treating their long-term members and collectors well.

They raised their Buck of the Month numbers and it's worked pretty well for availability most of the time. This was advertised as a very limited run. I was bummed but I feel like it's a sample of things to come. I hope. Magnacut is a winner.

It's a little dishonest and melodramatic to compare them to GEC.

Yeah, they may use similar tactics on some of the special stuff. But if you need a knife, the standard line does the job and they're literally available everywhere at ridiculously reasonable costs for US made products.

There's no "standard" line of GEC. There's no base models. You want ANYTHING from them, you have to hunt, pray, beg, sacrifice a goat under a blood moon, and for what?

I'm all about collecting, but some Buck fans are just as toxic as GEC fans. They demand scarcity and rarity so the things they collect are special and limited, they don't want big production runs. Then, when they can't get ahold of something, suddenly the complaint is that it's TOO rare and they need to bump up those production numbers so little Timmy isn't left out in the cold.

Can't have it both ways. 🙄

I didnt buy the 2nd knife to flip it at a profit. When I have sold BOTM's/ in demand knives, both here and on the BCCI FB page, that I had extra's of, I sold them at my cost...what I paid plus shipping and taxes. I buy at least two of everything I like, watches, knives, swords, guns and so some extant, even cars. One to collect / keep pristine and one to use without worrying about having to keep it like new. As for feeling butt hurt about your personal reality... may I suggest a "safe space"?

I am a very good customer/collector and I think Buck has treated me very well.

Happily we live in a free market/capitalist country and once something belongs to you , you are free to do with it/sell it as you will...including flipping it at a good profit.

To me it seems just the opposite. It seems like my S30v 110 stays sharp a little longer than my magnacut 110. But the difference isn't huge. According to the charts the magnucut 110 should be more than three times as tough as the S30v 110. My intention is to NOT prove that theory, but I'm carrying my magnucut 110 anyway.

O.B.

on working edge, id agree with that. s30v seems to lose its sharp edge pretty quickly. even though it still has a working edge and lasts a good while. actual sharp edge, i feel magnacut last longer in my uses.

I was at the BCCI event when these were rolled out. Buck did not tell us about those going up on the web. I was busy at the event and not checking the messages on my phone. So I missed out on the web knives. Only knew about the club 501.

It’s strange they would release them online during the event. Seems like you couldn’t win either way, but I think the 501 would have been worth missing the others.

Same here. By the time I heard of the ones put up on the web they were sold out. I did get the 501 though that was sold at the bcci event.

The guys at Buck asked what I would be interested in when it comes to a collaboration piece. I asked them for a small classic-style folder similar to the 501 but with a clip-point, elk horn, and a small sheath with a pocket clip. Industrial designer Lee incorporated a wider blade, full flat grind, and a long pull nail notch that really pulled the whole thing together. After some iteration on the pocket slip we were able to get something very functional which provides the convenience of modern pocket clip carry without having a clip directly on the knife which I think simply wouldn’t work with this type of knife. I’m proud of the combination of classic and modern we were able to put together.
