Special project Magnacut ???

The guys at Buck asked what I would be interested in when it comes to a collaboration piece. I asked them for a small classic-style folder similar to the 501 but with a clip-point, elk horn, and a small sheath with a pocket clip. Industrial designer Lee incorporated a wider blade, full flat grind, and a long pull nail notch that really pulled the whole thing together. After some iteration on the pocket slip we were able to get something very functional which provides the convenience of modern pocket clip carry without having a clip directly on the knife which I think simply wouldn’t work with this type of knife. I’m proud of the combination of classic and modern we were able to put together.

I ended up with #001/100. Fantastic knife in every way. Thank you Larrin for all you have done and for the top notch presentation on magnacut. You even had my wife totally engaged. Lol.

Hi Larrin,
Welcome to the Buck forum! Your presentation was very informative as to what Magna steel is all about, thank you for doing it for the BCCI knife nerds.

I liked your knife design so well I asked if I could by the one passed around at your seminar. I will remember the event every time I use that knife!

All of you forum folks should go to Larrin's "Knife Steel Nurds.com" and read up on Magna Steel and other steel related things.

I think the Larrin 501 is the ultimate Sunday go to meetin knife! You guys did a fantastic job on this knife and sheath setup. I’d sure like to get one but they are probably already gone. Thanks for showing us the knife and the back story!

We should have a version with different handle material coming soon. I don't want to say anything the marketing group isn't ready for, however. :)

Larrin I'm REALLY interested in a Buck 112 Magancut and would flip out if somehow someway it would be a drop point! But my question is is it possible to mirror polish Magnacut? I bought the 110 version and so far it's living up to the hype!

Mirror polishing is challenging when steels contain significant amounts of vanadium or niobium. It’s not impossible but I would look at other steels as being more ideally suited to a mirror polish.

I would have bought from ya. that what I really wanted. I love the sport. modern features and convenience without giving up too much. I've been using my magnacut 110 for awhile now. this steel is best Bucks put out yet in a 110 format. so far its been 100% corrosion proof. I know Sal at spyderco has been testing it in his salt tests and it's passed so far. seems to hold a sharper edge better than s30v. so easy to sharpen. tough enough. there is no lose on a 110.
I can attest to the 100% corrosion proof! I work in the oilfield and the water out here is absolutely nasty. Like... smells like metal and salt. Rusts stainless steel in under an hour. Disgusting stuff. Been using a protech malibu in magnacut for over a month now and not a single spot on it!

good info thanks. now ya got my curiosity rearing full throttle. I know nothing about oilfields. what's that water used for out there? some form of a drilling process, machinery cooling, something else?

The water out here is used for frac jobs to fracture the shale deposits so the wells can produce. The rock formation isn't very porous so they used high pressure (I've seen pressures as high as 12.1k psi) and sand to fracture the formations. Then, when they bring the wells online, they get a lot of water back. The water they get back gets treated with an insane amount of chemicals and reuses to frac the next well. So, if you think salt water is corrosive think again! This stuff is so nasty you can smell the salt and metal in it. It's also full of bleach, acid, and other corrosive chemicals. And my magnacut blade literally looks brand new! As a comparison, I carried a spyderco drunken out here for 1 12 hiur shift. S90v blade showed an insane amount of rust spots in only 8 hours.

Bakken Formation?

After reading through the Magnacut information I am definitely intrigued by this new steel and hope to see more builds in the future.

Not the Bakken. Bakken is in ND. I work in the Permian/Delaware. Wet Texas. I'm actually having a custom fixed wharncliffe mad by another forum member as we speak! Super excited to finally get it! Magnacut and cf.

My bad. I realized my error once I re-read your post. I live right on the edge of the Bakken. Not that much sand here.

All good! I wouldn't mind getting to work up there at some point. It's one of thebfew fields I haven't gotten to work in and I'd get to see two of six states I haven't managed to visit yet. Heard it's really nice up there! West Texas is disgusting. Lol.
