A web crawling with millions of spiders is growing across several acres of a state park 50 miles east of Dallas, inspiring both wonder and revulsion. (PHOTOGRAPH BY TOM PENNINGTON/FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, VIA ASSOCIATED PRESS)

WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gaaaaaah, gimmmmmmie 1000 liters of diesel and a match and i'll take care of that nastiness!

That looks like a tentworm infestation . . . but the scientists checked it out and said it is spiders.

Highly unusual phenomenon. Most spiders are solitary and cannibalistic. They stake out a territory, spin their own web, and will kill and eat any other spider they meet. The exception to this is when a spider mates . . . but then the female typically kills and eats the male immediately afterward. Millions of spiders sharing territory like this is unheard of. Perhaps there was a mutation, or some chemicals in the environment have suppressed their natural aggression towards one another.

Are you sure it's a bunch of spiders? Might be just 1 really biggun :D

This reminds me of something I've seen on a David Attenborough documentary.

IIRC, it's the work of a large colonly of very small spiders that cooperate to spin webs that cover a large area. Again IIRC they are typically found in tropical areas.

Maybe they have made their way to Texas?

Kind regards
Mick

This occurred a few years ago...I was in Iraq and Texas received record levels of rain and a lot of flooding. This caused an abundance of available dinner insects and consequently an increase in predators. My wife said that this was the consensus for an explanation...they are no longer there, but for one who doesn't care for spiders (or at least have them crawling on me:D), this definitely puts chills down my spine:eek:

Dude, that ROCKS!

That is sooooo cool.

Man we didn't have anything like that, but something cool nonetheless. Year before last we had huge number of insects, I mean atrocious numbers. Well, all along my road, for about 4 miles, of all things golden orb weavers (a colorful type of banana spider) had strung webs from the ground to the top wire of the telephone poles -- looked like a giant gossamer net. It was like an all-you-can-eat buffet for them.

Why such hate towards spiders? They are the natural enemies of flies and other pests. Without them we would be screwed. I'd choose spiders anytime instead of flies, mosquitos and other nuisances.

I remember reading about this. Cool post.

I just vomited up my Cheerios......

I'm packing up and moving, right now, to a state that is currently frozen.
