Spider Colony

I hear that they really really hurt when they bite you, like scissors cutting into the skin. Was it really that bad?

It did hurt, but not much different from being stung by a bee or a wasp. I wasn't happy, and the side of my neck swelled up to where I couldn't turn my head in that direction for a couple hours, but I lived.

Now that is some interesting stuff. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to get nailed by one of these guys. I’ve held them plenty of times, but as long as you don’t restrain their movements, and gently remove them from the ground (not the web), you generally can get away with it. That goes for a lot of animals such as snakes, etc. But, when you restrict their movements, watch out! They tend to get on me when I’m on the four wheeler or golf cart at the hunting plantation. Even for my bug crazed likings, its still freaky to see one on you that you didn’t intend to be there. You don’t have any pictures of the bite do you?

I was on the back of a topless golf cart at the time, exploring a prospective camp site just south of Homestead. I was riding in the back, while a friend of mine and the property's owner were in front. We were going down a trail that the owner hadn't cleared out in a while. The spider's net was across the trail, they ducked and the web and spider got me on the left side before I could duck. I felt the spider on my neck and I grabbed it and threw it off. It was really creepy to feel its legs and body in the palm of my hand. It was too late as it had bitten me, probably at the moment of contact. The thing was huge.

Don't have any pictures. This happened in the mid eighties before I moved to California. It simply swelled up, like any large insect bite. I'm just grateful that I wasn't allergic or it could have been very bad, as we were far from help and the property owner didn't have a phone. The nice thing about the whole incident it is I lost a bit of my fear of spiders, since I was bitten by a really large one and I didn't die. I wouldn't want to be bit again, though.
