Spoon Carving Fail - beware, graphic pics

I just got a couple of curved carving knives from Ragnar a week or two ago. I've successfully carved out one spoon bowl with them so far and thought "ok, this is not as weird as I thought it'd be." So last night, I sat down to start on a new spoon while my GF was watching TV. I was being inattentive, stupid, and careless:o. This is the result:

Went to the ER and got stitched up; luckily it was a slow night, though it was still around 3 hours when I got out of there.

So, this is my first semi-serious knife-nut wound. I cut my finger with my Bravo-1 a while ago, fiddling around with the sheath, but a few butterfly closures took care of that. And here I thought I was doing pretty well having gone so long without cutting myself :(.

So, lesson learned.

Btw, anyone have any videos on proper use of the curved carving knives?

Everyone here has cut themsleves---at least once.(Except me--I've done it several times)

We appreciate your honesty

Heal fast

Thanks Dr. Bill.

I was being stupid for the most part. I wasn't using the carving knife correctly as I was trying to get the bowl started. I was using too much force, resulting in the length/depth of the laceration. I was also starting from the hard exterior of the commercial carving block I was using; I hadn't carved it down a bit to get to the softer interior. All of these are "duh" things, but in the moment, I was just getting frustrated not being able to get the bowl started, since on the last spoon it was relatively easy.

I've already learned much from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhYNDRmIg0s

Looks really painful. The lack of attention is really what nails you. Hard to do on a project that involves a lot of cutting. Carving can be problematic in this regard because the activity often forces you to make compromise cuts towards you at some point. Not so bad when you are being attentive but because the same activity is also very repetitive, you can lose focus very easily.

Damn Russell!!

Hope you heal up fast....At least you will have a cool scar. Scars are cool.

Ouch man. You know you're way too addicted to BFC when you stop to take pics of a knife injury to post before heading to the Doc. :p

Yeah, but the person that he'd want to impress knows that he was watching reruns of Sex in the City while he wounded so suddenly.;)

Yikes! That one looks scary. Just kidding above. Just heal up quickly!

wow Russell... that's a gnarly one... it's going to leave a nice scar... :)

glad to hear you're all good man....

Yeah, I'd probably cut myself too:D Man, just the other day I was showing my son how to safely close that Cold Steel Pocket Bushman...I was using another folder showing how the locking bar pops the blade closed and guess who had their thumb in the way:o It wasn't bad and my son got a good laugh out of it...it was a good (humble) lesson to never let your guard down and always treat tools like this with respect when you're using them.

Hope it heals up quickly...at my age, scars just add character:D

KGD: Yes, it really does. I was sitting cross-legged on the ground, and my GF was sitting on the couch behind me. We were talking and when I turned around to look at her, I slipped. Surprisingly it wasn't painful for the most part, I was dumbfounded more than anything. But when the Doc numbed the wound, that stung.

Jake - Haha, thanks :)

Haha, I know. My GF rolled her eyes when I asked her to get the camera before we left. Luckily, it didn't bleed much.

Yup, definitely have to remember to always be careful. Thanks Rock

Whoa RK that is a "spoonfull"!!! Kinda took me surprise....your thread title deceived me, I was expecting to see a ruined project:eek: Hey I thought wow RK is pretty Buff...then I realized that I was looking at your calf and not your forearm lol. Like they say back home "no worry, bumby pau". All Aloha, MK

Ouch!!! Well at least it didnt bleed much. It could have been alot worse. We have all cut ourselves before (some more than others). And I think I am in the more than others category!!

Get well soon, and if you think it hurt when you cut yourself, wait until you get the doctors bill.:)

BTDT - got the stitches (I started collecting sutures when I was 7, w/ mom's paring knife :) )

Hope it heals quickly - keep it clean & dry & it should do fine.

Thanks guys!

Looks like it started bleeding again, got a growing blot on the dressing. I should probably just stop walking around.

I was really looking forward to taking a study break this memorial day and doing a hike somewhere. Looks like that might have to wait.:grumpy:

And yeah, at least I'll have a scar to brag about :p:D

Yeah, that is scary! It's the reason I don't play with my khuk very often, and am very paranoid when I do.

Tiny scratch there bud. Just lay some neosporin and a bead of superglue. You'll be fine.

Seriously though, glad to know you're okay. That looks nasty.
