Spring 2016 Becker East Gathering - sign-up closed

I can't speak for the man but I can tell you, you won't get a camper up the hill to the campsite.
I am slowly getting into wild edibles so wouldn't mind learning from anyone that has experience.

Who's eligible to go on these soirees? I don't see any mention of campers. Tent only?

the campsite is on top of a ridge accessible by 4x4 and/or 4x2 w/locking diff. if the path is dry.
trailers don't fit.
attendance requirements are pretty lax, but it is a fairly polite society in the Heinlein sense of things.
there will be food, fun, fire, firewater, grain soda, food, cutlery........

women are welcome to attend, with or without an attending male.
SWMBO has not yet decided if she will be joining me this time.

Johnny1280 said everything very nicely over at the west coast thread...

"What can you expect when you show up to BeckerWest?

There will be food, fire, strong drink, contests, and general merriment! Knives, guns, beards...you get the idea.
There hasn't been an age limit in the past. Just use your best judgment on bringing kids along.
Most of the attendees will not use a filter. Especially at night time around the camp. Virgin eyes and ears may be...(will be) offended.

Friday- Guests arrive, folks hanging out, setting up camp, a lot of B.S.ing, a fun night around the camp.
Saturday- Big breakfasts, contests, lot's of food, usually not as rowdy as Friday night.
Sunday- breakfast, camp clean up, trash is picked up, and everyone is usually out by Noon.

"What should I bring?"

-Bacon
-Camp stove
-Food, drink, camp chairs for sure.
-Tent, hammock, or some form of shelter.
-Trade items if you want
-Bring some TP, there are no restrooms.
-Folding tables and pop-up canopies are always nice to have around.
-Knives, guns, and gear. Ear and eye protection.
-Bring whatever you need to spend two nights in the woods."

oh, yeah - I would love the chance to take home a couple cases of yuengling porter if you can find any.

I'll def start the search!

I can look too. I finally found it here at Harris Teeter grocery stores. Of course, Harris Teeter went out of business. Other places have to sell it though.

Pretty sure we have the porter down here as well. I'll take a look next time I'm in the store.

Y'all just let me know cuz I'm going to be limited on space with 3 of us in the jeep. I'll have the roof rack and hitch rack loaded but I will def make room for beer. That being said, any extra room is nice heh.

Random question.

If I bring my wife is she going to be the only girl there?

Do some of you guys bring your wives?

There are a decent number of wives/gfs there. The place would barely run without Kay(Trade's wife) . NCSlice's woman held down a medivac a year or so ago. Chance Sanders' wife is always by his side. The women are welcome and keep us heathens from setting ourselves on fire on the mountain and/or drowning in alcohol.

Haha! Well put Murph!
My wife and daughter (now 13) had a great time and are both up for it again.

My local store sells yuengling so I can probably bring a case or three down. Just need to know glass bottles or cans?

I'm in... probably just me, but maybe Sabbath too, at least for a few hours.

Middle of April seems likely to be rather chilly to be swinging in the breeze, so I'll bring a 2-person pup tent. Or I may just pass out on the garage floor. Or curl up next to the firepit... Or wherever... as those who've seen me in (inaction) are well aware, I can snooze pretty much anywhere. I'm not picky. :D

Cans are a lot easier to smoosh down and deal with. There are garbage cans on E's property, but 700# of empty bottles is a huge pain. We all need to pretty much pack out everything we pack in. So my vote is for canned beer. :)

I have no specific requests for classes or seminars, but I'm certainly open to listen to anyone who wants to teach... well, pretty much anything knife- or outdoors- or homestead/survival-related. In recent years I have learned about everything from soap-making to cordage and net-making to advanced camouflage techniques, and more at Ethan's Gatherings. So don't be shy, tell/show us what you know!

Ethan has always been very gracious about letting us use his shop and tools, so I will go out on a limb and say if anyone wants to bring their own knife-projects to work on grinding skills, assembly or finishing, or just knives to sharpen, I'll be glad to help. Whether you want me to teach you to do it yourself, or just have me do it for you. (providing extra beer is highly recommended in the later case ;) ) I'll bring some belts and stones and safety glasses and whatnot. The last few Gatherings, messing around in the shop on Saturday afternoon has been a huge part of the fun for me. So again... don't be shy.

I'm pretty sure I can talk my dear wife into sending along some treats to share. I'm not allowed to show up without a mess of her bacon-wrapped water chestnuts. Angie's highly-sought-after cheese/sausage breakfast biscuits do not officially exist until Sunday morning, so don't even ask before then. I will also have this year's version of JT's World-Famous HomeGrown HandMade Green Sauce, for those who like a bit of spice.

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but there's usually a drawing with prizes on Saturday night. So if you have anything you make yourself that you would like to show off, or something special from your region for a new friend to take home with them, please keep that in mind. For instance, there will be at least one THK custom knife in the kitty...

Aww, sad to not see Angie, I think my wife was looking forward to visiting with her, myself as well...well...I guess ur the next best thing. :D

I get it about the bottles. Most canned beer sucks so its good to let folks know they're responsible for their empties. I'm hoping to have just one bottle...a fifth of something, haven't decided yet. Might just grab a plastic Canadian Mist hehe.

I think the question about bottles or cans was directed towards those looking for the stuff to take home that's unavailable in their area.

I've taken up lock picking and I'm sucking quite well at it. Maybe those who are in to it can teach others. A trunk with a prize and maybe a 5 minute limit per contestant would be fun. Anyone have clear training locks? It's a good man skill and fun puzzle like task.

Well if I bring my van I can probably bring down a ton of yunengling so I may be talking orders haha.

ill wait until we are closer to april to see if there is a high demand.

I would love to learn more about tree and plant identification.

Me too! I'm woefully unskilled in that regard.

I'm sure Ang will hang out at least for a while. She likes all you lunatics, but Gatherings are also her chance to go do whatever-it-is she does for a day or two when I'm out of her hair. :p

As for cans v. bottles... whatever works! :) I prefer drinking from glass at home too, but again, damn the garbage bag gets heavy fast...

I know nothing about defeating locks other than wearing a heavy boot... but DerekH has done some studying on the topic. Hopefully he will wander over and you and he can teach us something.

lager and the black&tan is easy to find -- Porter not so much.

My store has lager, Black and Tan, IPA, and light. I'll keep an eye out at other places for this mystical porter.

Sorting out our schedules right now. If everything works out, it will be Christine and I with our "boys" at our usual location. If that's ok.
