Spring into Spring with a "Barlow a Day for Thirty Days"

how many, like me, just use the main?
On the Barlows I find myself just using the main blade. I might use the pen if there is a huge pile of boxes to break down or something like that where I know it's going to dull the main blade.

With the stockman I rarely use the main blade.

I don't know what day this is, maybe 8 I think. I'll go with 8. It got messed up with some technicalities and a lost knife and then I got a gorgeous new Congress that kicked the Barlow out of the pocket.... You know how it goes.....

Kutmaster today. Fresh edges, fresh oil, reeks like 3in1.... it's ready for the next 3,000 miles. (4,828km).

DAY XIV

Dubious about this one but here goes. Got some fine Stag on it and it's a Lockback too, Drop-Point, the bolster's big but it's slant....fingers crossed :)

I decided. It's my challenge ! ;)🤣🤣🤣🤣🦨

I am enjoying all the participation !😍😍😍
Thanks for taking the helm on this one! If it were left up to the group it might have been labeled a "Fox-n-Hound, drop point, barlowbolstered, Italian Lockback." 🤔🦆
"That's no joke" ;);):)

Yes, participation has been incredible!

Day 14
Today I'm carrying a Boker M4 Sherman-Damast. This one has a historic connection, using various materials obtained from the production of the M4 Sherman Tank.

IMG_1504.jpg

Boker website. "The Boker Barlow M4 Sherman-Damascus is supplied with a unique Damascus blade forged from various materials from the production of M4 Sherman tanks previously restored by the museum. The unique 80-layer Damascus is hand forged for us by Chad Nichols in the customized Ladder pattern and is reminiscent of the tank marks left in the ground by the heavy tracks of the M4 Sherman. The integrally constructed Barlow is supplied with burlap micarta handle scales that are colored to evoke the authentic camouflage finish of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. The stainless steel handles are CNC-milled from the solid and also form the characteristic bolsters and are ground to a matt finish by hand."

I am more of a "main blader", but, some of the previous owners of my old knives were "pen bladers". 😊

🤣🥕

It says it's a fox-n-hound. 🤬 It's a bare-head and one might say it has one side of the bolster that one could say is extra long ...... but ....... the short side isn't extra long and it is also slanted (which doesn't fit my idea of a Barlow pattern) ..... so I am going to call it a half Barlow ..... or almost a Barlow. So ..... buzz, buzz, buzz ...... you need to toss it aside for another day and get a Barlow in your pocket ...... before this day is through ! 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🦨🐈‍⬛;)🤣🤣🤣

On the other hand .......... it's a beautiful jack knife !😍

I decided. It's my challenge ! ;)🤣🤣🤣🤣🦨

Kentucky Bourbon, Kentucky Burley, tobacco Barlows, tractor green ............. they all seem to go nicely with a Barlow. Barlows on the farm, when I was a youngster in Kentucky, is where I got my first glimpse of a Barlow.

I am enjoying all the participation !😍😍😍
🥺 Looks like the steward has ordered my entry to be withdrawn from the race ;) And I'm not requesting a doping test here either....🐴🦥

DAY XIV mk.ii

This Stag should carry the day and in this matter In Primble I trust 😻

Happy Monday!

Day 12…

It takes a conscious effort for me not to automatically reach for the main blade. How many of us regularly use the smaller blade, and how many, like me, just use the main?

Yeah, that's pretty much me. Single blade Barlows are slimmer, lighter, more pocket friendly, etc; but as a boy, the only Barlows I remember had two blades. So, being the stubborn old dinosaur that I am, I prefer the two bladed Barlows.

DAY 14 :
I posted the Bulldog with the Spey Blade yesterday . I am posting both just so there is no confusion . They both have a curved handle , but one handle is curved up and the other is curved down . Both are Green Bone made in 1986 and bought from the same guy in 2017 . And I am a Main Blader .

I am the exact opposite, i always use the secondary first on all my knives, i think i just feel more control. Im usually using it to strip wire or cut out a template. The old timer i carried two days ago i removed the main (broken spring) and i use it alot.

If you’re still snowboarding, you should try skating again. I skated as a kid and have started again in my 40s as my son has gotten into it. I’m not great but it’s really fun to do with my son and it keeps me young. I’m also a snowboarder. I started doing that in the late 80s and never stopped.
My little cousin still skates but I think mostly down hill. He's down in Florida but I bet he could get me back into the swing of things. He keeps me young and "hip" 😂

Day 14:
In light of the conversation, this seemed appropriate even though there's no snow left. My favorite snowboard. Also, a picture of sunset over the lake at the top of the mountain from this past winter's outings.

I, too, tend to go for my secondaries first. On a barlow, that'd be the pen. On my stockmans, that'd usually be the sheepsfoot. I guess I tend to keep my main blade for more organic things like slicing up an apple, cutting chicken, or pruning the blueberry bushes.

Regarding main vs. secondary it depends on the knife. I really like the secondary on my Case Barlows. Just the right pull, size, shape, placement... everything. Consistently great, out of my very small sample size of 2.

The secondary on my other Barlows all seem pretty stiff, slightly smaller (although I haven't measured), and somehow "off." I can't really put a finger on it. Again, small sample size though.

Anyway, for Day 14, here's a photo of a Case main blade:

there's no snow left.
must be nice. we got a fresh batch over-night ... wiith more scheduled for delivery b4 the "weekend"😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬☹️🥺😭

Regarding main vs. secondary, for me it depends on the task, and what blade is what. 😇

Example: If I was going to sharpen (or make) a quill pen, I would probably use the pen blade or more likely the Wharncliffe blade on the SAK Mini Champ.
(thinnest slicers I have. More so than even my Exacto knife, I believe.)
Peeling a critter and getting it ready for pan/grill/smoker/drier (for jerky)/ freezer would need a spear point/clip poin, or Spey blade.
Unzipping the belly a Spey or Spear Point, since I don't have a "Montana Knife" for that task ... come to think of it, the "Montana Knife" was supposed to be great for peeling, too ...

🤣 Looks like we'll be lucky to get snow one more time before summer. I love the snow though! I'd take shoveling the driveway over mowing the yard any day of the week 😝
