Spring into Spring with a "Barlow a Day for Thirty Days"

Day 14

Tough work for the Roundhead today, slicing a little packing tape. Way way overpacked with big bubble pillows. Better than not enough (cough big river cough).

Replacement lightweight camera strap for the one that's fraying, remote switch I thought I already had, and eclipse filters for camera and eyeballs. Now, time to clean the gooey off the blade and make it shiny again.

Day 16

81°F and overcast in not-so-sunny South Florida today! I decided to try to brighten the mood with this very orange Rosecraft Blades' Beaver Creek Barlow.

I like Rosecraft's traditional offerings. Great fit and finish at reasonable prices, and you can buy them even if you're no good at the modern bloodsport that is Internet Fast-Click (I won't type the word "l-llyscr-mble, because it makes me cringe inside...). Even better, they have excellent QC, which means they have frequent "seconds" sales, where you can pick up knives with a little bit of extra character for even more reasonable prices. Their moderns, on the other hand, do absolutely nothing for me at all.

Also, If you were wondering who keeps old Plexiglas® color samples laying around, now you know. Glad I could help. 👍

Old Boiley is still in my pocket for day 14!!! We're almost halfway there!!Bearings 1.jpgI collect a few different things, vintage corkscrews is one besides knives!!
Old Boiley and Me found this corkscrew today - I thought I'd seen them all!!! This one has a thrust plate and ball bearings!! New one for me!!!
Works like a hot darn!!!🍷🍾

I picked this up too just to see if it lived up to the hype. I was pretty impressed! Fit and finish was pretty good. Even flush in all 3 positions. Only complaint I had was the tip of mine was ever so slightly bent and the blade had a bit of a belly to it.

Wow - I can't believe they didn't hold that one back as a second! I picked up a few pieces from a recent seconds sale and some of them included notes of why they were held back. For the most part, they were for very minor details like "Slightly Rounded Tip," "Scales not well matched," and "Possible crack near pin" (I looked and looked, under magnification and with different sources of light, and couldn't find anything...).

Looking more closely at the blade on this one, I think it might have a slight belly too. That said, I'm not sure whether it's a result of a manufacturing defect or the designer's sometimes questionable sensibilities. If taking the full product line into consideration, adding some belly to a traditionally straight blade would be one of his less ostentatious design departures. 😂

I don't drink wine, so I have absolutely no use for a corkscrew, but if I ever ran across one with bearings, I'd probably have to get it.:)
Here's a Beverage Entry Tool, that's pretty cool though.

Nice! Two works of art!

Barlow is a good knife to have when your ear tagging.
Agreed. Feels like they were meant for ranch work.
That Boot jack looks like it might have been Gregor Samsa at one time....definite Kafka element to it 🤣
🤣 I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe his final resting spot was my mud room floor 😁
DAY 16 : CHOISES AVAILABLE FROM BACK IN 2019 .

A few have been gifted away .
Too early to decide . Will have to get back to you on what I will carry today .

Awesome collection, Harry. You could go all 30 days with no duplicates.
DAY 16 continued : I did make my choice for the day .

That’s actually the one I was hoping to see when I looked at your previous picture. Nice stag and a cool bolster stamp.

Sticking with the Rough Ryder (I double checked the spelling isn't the old with an "i") RR198 for day 17. (Picture is in post 782, page 40.)

Must be a popular variation.
I know the smooth white bone variation/version was made before the spelling change to "Ryder".

This is the third one I ordered (and paid for). ☹️
First two were long before the spelling change. They were both misplaced/lost before I could get home time and get them. ☹️
I ordered (and paid for) this one post retirement and post stroke.

I "think" it was worth getting.

The hardest part of this challenge for me is that a barlow is my preferred size to carry, so 30 days of barlow means I’m not carrying a lot of my other similar-sized favorites.

That’s a nice photo and Barlow too. Nobody said you couldn’t tote along another knife ….. or you could tote one of your other favorites part of the day and a Barlow part of the day. It’s an honor system and I already said the rules was laxed. ;) 😍🤣

Day 17 - one of my favorite TC15 Barlows, this one is from 2013 ...... antique yellow saw-cut bone with sheeps-foot blade. I preferred the original 3 pins on the covers and the font style used on the bolster stamp back then as opposed to the current offerings.

I'll add my lightly customized carved Mountain Goat Opinel No. 8 to my belt sheath, just in case I need a sharp blade with some curve to it. By lightly customized, I mean that I stripped the finish off of it, used my favorite oil stain, rubbed in some bone black powder to highlight the grain .... put one coat of low gloss Formby's tung oil finish on it, and rubbed the Vibroloc ring with red Scotchbrite for a more satin finish. ;) 😊
