I'd say for the same reasons as it is used for framelocks - weight reduction and corrosion-resistance. While most framelocks seem to be made of titanium, this is not really a requirement - they can be made from steel, too.

the main reason why titanium is used for frame locks is strength
Me thinks

A frame needs to be strong :D

Same here.

I would really love to see a lock-back folder with titanium handles.... a Manix would be perfect IMO.
STR modded a CJ ZDP with a titanium handle. I just started mine with titanium handles STR cut out for me. Be a while though as don't the heart to tear up my Calypso Jr, ZDP.

Titanium is certainly strong, but it is not generally stronger than steel; one has to factor in mass and volume. If we had two framelocks of identical shape and dimensions, one made of steel, the other of titanium, then the steel version would actually be stronger (but also heavier). You could make a titanium framelock that is both stronger and lighter than the steel version, but it would have to be larger - and obviously, there are limits to the reasonable size of a handle.

FRN? No idea if one exists. I bet someone has tried it, though. :)
Steel? Spyderco's very own Cricket, for example. Or CRKT's old S-2, or Kershaw's various Vapors.

let us not leave out the SS ATR

Think titanium should always be in the spyderco line :)
its should be :)

with the new steel :)
and the new design
:)

Titanium has the advantage of being lighter but it can also be colored by anodizing which makes for some great eye candy appeal. Imagine an Ocelot with titanium scales .100 thick with anodized cat paw prints instead of cut outs or a Dodo with anodized blue titanium scales and an anodized DODO bird somewhere else in a different contrasting color. Or one could anodize the Spyder logo on the handle scales also and stuff like that.

I don't know about for manufacturers but for people like me it is actually cheaper to use titanium over stainless. (even at the current prices) Once you factor in the heat treating costs of steel it can be more expensive than titanium, at least for the hobbyist low volume maker like myself.

for looks?

or to make it more expensive?

:jerkit:

Aesthetics, weight reduction, excellent corrosion resistance, texture (I like the way my Ti ATR feels in my hand), ability to be colored by anodizing, and in order to make it the same strength as steel it would have to be thicker which would make the handle more comfortable to use under a heavy load IMO.

Why are all the major frame locks made of titanium?

I am yet to see a L-back or L-lock made of Titanium.
That would be a waste of money
:)

The titanium frame lock is an engineering thing.
It didn't just happen.
:D

Personally, the only use I have for Titanium is for anodizing or corrosion resistance. If it's not being used in a rust prone environment, or getting tricked out with wild colors, it's of no use to me.

It has serious gadget appeal though, and gives bragging rights, but that's already been mentioned.;)

Lockback: Buck had a titanium 110 a few years ago, for example. And Spyderco made a titanium Police, but i think that was a rather special run. Lockbacks are usually either in the lower price class of folders (where titanium is too expensive), or the very expensive custom knives by makers like Ron Lake, where titanium does not look sufficiently traditional. There are relatively few lockbacks in the middle tier, where the knives are expensive and "tactical" enough for titanium. I think that's unfortunate, and I'm happy that Spyderco is an exception and uses lockbacks in more designs than most makers.

Linerlock: Spyderco's Peter Herbst and the Bob Lum Tanto folder mentioned in this thread, for example. Many, many custom knives, too.

Well, people want titanium, titanium is seen as cool, it's the stuff they use to make bombers and submarines. As smcfalls13 wrote, gadget appeal and bragging rights. Look at all those knives with actual titanium blades, how many people have a real use for those? Someone has even started making titanium wallets - I doubt that this is very practical, but I'm sure it will sell. (And before someone thinks I'm just ridiculing others, rest assured that I'm a victim to the titanium hype myself - knives, watch, sunglasses, fountain pen,... all ti. :))

Didn't know all that ,but I am a Ti victim too.

One frn framelock :barf: , coming up:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387227

Of course, it never got off the ground.

There are many steel framelocks -- Kershaw, Buck, Benchmade, and Spyderco have them in their lines.

But back to the original reason for this thread: SAL! Please consider a ti framelock Spyderco -- I don't see why is has to be with CRK.

As others have said, with titanium slabs on a lock-back folder you get strength without alot of weight, and you don't need steel liners for rigidity either.
I have a titanium handle Buck 560 and it is a pure joy to use.
If it had a VG-10 blade, thumb-hole, and a pocket-clip it would be perfect.

I also have a Boker lock-back with a titanium handle and 440C blade-steel.

I've never seen an FRN frame-lock, but there are quite a few SS frame-locks out there:

Kershaw Vapor
Kershaw Ken Onion Leek
Kershaw Ken Onion Chive
Gerber Hinderer Game-Pro
Camillus CUDA EDC

Just to name a few.

As Grey Area said Spyderco has made a titanium police (which is a lock-back by the way). Also I’ve seen a titanium Spyderco Delica before. And if you include other makers I’m sure there are plenty of titanium handled lock-backs out there.

I fail to see why. Perhaps you could explain to me why you feel that it would be a waste of money?
