Spyderco Backs Down On Warranty@Repair

IMO, and I might be wrong, this is a situation in which a person used a tool to the end of its useful life and then expected Spyderco, because of its history of great CS, to replace it with a new one. Stories of that type thing get passed around on the 'net quite easily and often, so I don't think such an idea is quackery. However, it is, again IMO, unreasonable. Tools wear out and Spyderco can't just give knives away. Let's figure out how much it cost Tony each day to use that knife - I'll bet the 1-2 cents per day compares very favorably to all his other tools.

My faith in Spyderco's CS has not been questioned by this post.

No offense intended.

Dude, that knife was "rode hard and put away wet"
You got your use out of it. Buy a prybar to use as a prybar, they are a lot cheaper.

Well Tony sent me pics and asked if I would post them. The pics sent were huge so I shrunk them. If anyone wants to see them bigger I can post larger versions.
WOW! I remember my first ride through an ore-crusher!!!

That's some heavy duty use, dude! Looks like your daily driver from the knife demolition derbies.

indeed same respons here. I know that some toolmakers have a "break it and we replace it "policy, but these are tools that cost 2 to 3 times as much as ordinary tools. Spyderco could come up with that policy but it would double or triple the cost. I agree with Sal that ,this knife has had more then his share of work, even IMHO to much work. As i collect and wear Spyderco knives, i can't imagine me getting that amount of wear on any of my knives! Anyway, i am sorry that your expectations didn't came thru with Spyderco, but hearing the same judgement from others in these forum i also think u should lay this tool to a rest and get u a new work knife.

It's clear that not everybody has the same perception of what "used up" means. I find it amazing that Tonyknives submitted these pics thinking that they would help prove his case that the knife was defective.

Hey, I've got some lobster shells in my trash, maybe the supermarket will replace the lobster since after I cracked the shells, the meat fell out (and ended up in my stomach). :D

As a firefighter I use and sometimes abuse my knives to the point of repairable damage or total failure. If I use that knife in the course of a rescue and I indeed save a life with it that knfe has served its purpose. If I break it, oh well, I'll get a new one. Knives wear out plain and simple. I can not expect something to last forever if I use it on a daily basis and put it through its paces. From the look of Tony's knife I would say that it has been well used and carried and put through its paces.

"Spyderco warrants that all of our products are free from defects in mamaterial and workmanship....If a knife fails to function as it was designed we will examine its condition on its return to us, identify why it failed and respond in an appropriate manner. If we determine that there is a defect in the manufacture or materials we will repair, or replace that product with the same model or one of equal value. If the problem is determined not to be caused by defects in manufacture or materials we will inform you of the cost for repair. Upon agreement and payment, we will perform the repair. If we are unable to improve the condition of the knife, we will return it to you with the recommendation that it be retired from use."
The last line pretty much sums it up.

What a great excuse to buy a new knife! Sal said to retire it. Hmmm? I may use that line on my wife tonight and buy a couple.

Anyways, back to the point. Your knife wore out. No biggie. I bet you have tons of stories on how that knife served you well. Hang it on a wall and get another. Hope all works out.

Mike

All tools can break if you do not take proper care of them or misuse them. The knife has been used and abused to the point of failure...how is that Spyderco's fault? I would simply go buy another and forget about it.

Aloha Electric Zombie!

I already replied to TonyKnives, but I HAD to comment on your Avitar!!! COOL! Also, it won't be easy for this guy to "get a new one"...That G10 Harpy is a RARE bird!

Thanks DayWalker. Actually, I've seen several G10 Harpys at gun shows and knife stores.

Aloha ElectricZombie!

I just have a thing for Glocks and going off topic! :D

I hope ya got a few of them G10 birds!!! LOL!

Take care and God bless!

Holy.....!
Did you try to pick yourself a way through the wall of bomb shelter with this harpy? For your next knife I would suggest, you buy one that is a lot cheaper and can be thrown away after one use (which is likely to fail before you are done with your task), or you buy one that is a few times more expensive and will be replaced not matter what you did to it....But quite frankly, why don't you just use the right tool for the job...maybe a jackhammer?

I'm still laughing at this thread's premise. And absolutely NOT is this meant as a flame!

But givemeabreak! I'd personally be embarassed to submit a train wreck like this piece, expecting an "L.L.Bean" style no questions replacement warranty response from Spyderco when their warranty doesn't provide for such contingencies. And then to register public indignation.... gesh! I give points for the attempt to get warranty service... heck nothing ventured, nothing gained. But I dock points big time for the public outcry. :barf: Net major deficit! Some folks just want a free lunch..... go figure

Let it go. That thing has been used so far above and beyond what any knife should be asked, that to expect it replaced is laughable. Judging from the wear on the serrations and the beaten grips, it's gone through more than enough for two lifetimes.

Hi,hehe,

Nothing offensive, but,
If you will go ask for this pair of the shoes, replacing, and they will replace you, i dont doubt, that Spyderco replace this knife too .... ;)

Probably this car can be replaced too ... its not so used i think, and its sure factory mistake ...

And Damn! I dont doubt, that building contractor will replace this house too!!! Its sure his mistake!!! :grumpy:

I don't know..I've had really good service in the past, until I broke my Gunting Trainer. I sent it in, and offered to pay for a new blade; it wasn't a defect. I got sent back a nice note saying that it should be retired. I should be able to pay for the repair, right?. I'm very conflicted by this-I think that they make great knives, and I love the warranty Dept., but it's still broken..

Dijos,
I would think Spyderco would replace the blade for you . :(
You were not asking for "free" repair or replacement.
Assuming blades are still available for the Gunting ?

Interesting we get so attached to our fav' EDC and hate to retire/replace it. Only to find our fav' EDC is no longer mfg :grumpy:

[QUOTE=TonyKnives

So spyderco warranty and quality take it and shove it

PS
Their response was just to Callus for me with no negotiation or compassion JUST LOWDOWN DIRTY ROTTEN CHEAP

I worked in retail for short time in "Returns/Exchange" dept. Your comments remind me of some the  unrealistic customers I had to deal with.
Your post will not sway me from the purchase of Spyderco's in the furture.

Fess up Tony...what really happened to the knife??? ;)

Edgeseeker, that brought back memories of working at Kmart while in college (long time ago). I had a seriously upset customer that would not understand why I would not authorize a return on her defective/abused item.
I kindly pointed out to her that we didn't even sell that brand, it was a "store brand" for one of our competitors, and that the receipt she kept waving in my face wasn't from Kmart, but the store that actually sold that brand of merchandise.
She was still cursing as she left, and the small crowd she had attracted was laughing at her as she made her exit.
That kind of experience gives me some sympathy for CS reps, especially when you see this kind of crap posted as a "poor me" thread. :barf:

:) If anything - this just gives me more confidence in, and respect for the company who is run by "our Sal". He is not about to step back and take a loss on a knife just because someone tries to "bully" him into replacing their hard-used tool. Good on you, Sal!

Respectfuly, Jeff/1911.

PS - I LOVED your pictures Simona!

Where is this abuse you guys keep mentioning on his knife? It just looks to me like it was a well used tool and finally bit the dust.

That being said. TonyKnives, what were you thinking? How long have you used this knife for? Is that paint on the handle? Obviously this knife has been used a lot and frequently by you over who knows how long a period of time. You bought it, you used it well, and it broke. GAME OVER. Go pick up a new one because if the knife lasted that long through that kind of use it was obviously a keeper. I'd like to see you get another knife that would have performed better for as long as it did at that price point.

I think you should be thankful Sal even bothered with your post after the uncalled for comments you made about his company and its warranty department.

Where is Sal "really coming from" because it looks to me like you should be asking yourself that question.

See the amount of replys to your thread? There are so many because Spyderco is an honorable company and Sal is an honorable man which is why people come to his defense when some outlandish claim is made against him and the service he trys dearly to uphold to the highest standard.

I'm glad you are done with Spyderco, that leaves more of their knives for us.

-Bryan
