Spyderco Carbon Fiber

GB, also a Taichung knife, is solid CF.

Hmmm, how do you explain this then.

Well, that pic keeps me from having to snap some. You can quite clearly see the G10 underneath the chipped CF veneer.

Snap some pics, not my scales.

Fiberglass is what makes G10 different from CF. Is it really definite that the layer under the CF surface is made of fiberglass & resin? CF does not have to be woven, although that is its most common appearance. I have structural carbon fiber parts in my car, and they look similar in construction to the GB scales. Some are pretty on the surface with a uniform sheet of carbon fiber wrapping the piece (driveshaft, for instance), some look rough and unfinished (chassis braces). Some pieces have presentation-grade CF on one side, and a rougher grade on the underside (hood), but is still all CF. In the end, the performance is the same.

I have a Sage 1, and its definitely not like any true CF I have ever seen. But for the price I'm not complaining. I just assumed it had more resin in it, but enough CF strands in it to call it CF. From reading here, it sounds like its may be some type of CF over G10.
Anyway, it grips well when wet like CF, and I like it. I guess thats all that matters(to me).

The gray & the black is the same , there is no lamination line , as far as I can see on mine using a magnifying glass the grain is uniform ( best seen from an angle ) , just that the gray is beveled , showing side grain.

With the exception of the gold layer on top , it´s a solid piece of something , question is what !?

You can see the lamination line right there in the picture. You're looking too deep. It's only the first 2-3% that is actual CF.

Sal just posted in general. It is in fact laminated.

Teol, Sal just made a post in the thread in General.
They've made so many knives with CF he didn't go into which ones were what. Not sure about yours, but it is some type of CF.
Wow, I was a huge help to ya wasn't I:p

He's referring to the Lums (nishijin, people called it "diamond plate CF," it's just glass fiber) and the new GB air which is silver twill, which people incessantly call "silver CF."

Ahh, that makes sense. I have a knife with CF and silver twill G-10, and the twill part does look just like CF.

Mine are not like that - they are the same all the way through. I wonder whether there was a change in materials in the second run? The three we have here (I have two and my older son has one) are from the first shipment of the first run. All I can tell you is that these three are solid CF all the way through.

Thanks !

But I want a proper answer on that specific model from Sal/company rep not some general answer about other models & whatnot
now , the catalog spec´s are clear , it says CF .

"The Szabo’s handle is constructed of full stainless steel liners capped by Gold Line carbon fiber scales. This striking material combines the strength and light weight of carbon fiber with an outer layer of embedded gold-colored wire. "

Maybe Sal can come along and tell exactly how, and what, the current models are made of specifically.

I emailed him asking if he was interested in responding to the thread in general knife discussions...if you want that type of response...you may have to do the same...

We started making knives with carbon fiber scales a long time ago. (Walker). We've used many types and laminates from many companies. We've used solid CF and laminated CF/G-10. We use glass fiber as well. We've made buffed, peel-ply coated, etc. We've used one type on some models and switched later down the road. We've probably made more carbon fiber scales than any other company.

What is the problem for which you are asking?

I was just wondering if it was true or not. I kninda just wanted to know...
I've never owned or handled a carbon fiber knife so I was just curious.
Thanks for the explanation!

Sal, I think 1234(Teol) wants to know exactly what he got in his Szabo folder.

Are the handles carbon fiber (Szabo) or are they say G-10 with a sliver of carbon fiber on top ?

Oh and a problem , a minor one but still , the internal stop pins are rubbing on the liners , at least I think it´s the stop pins,
I have had to hold the blade in one hand and the handle in the other and "wiggle" it like a 1000 times just to make it
easier to open , it was hard when I got then it loosened but then it went super-hard , now I have cleaned it out &
oiled it but it´s still a bit hard , do you have any recommendations on a another method or should I just wiggle it some more ?

Ah I see now that fellow numerals also was asking for me , thanks !

CTS made a video about various CF, he asked me to post it since he's away from his computer.
