Spyderco Customer Service Disapointment

I have purchased 3 different sets of cheap Torx drivers from Lowes, Home-Depot, or WalMart.
If I compare the T10 bit from each set, they are all slightly different sizes.
I had to go through 3 sets ($5-$10 each) until I found a set with accurately sized bits.
You might be experiencing this same problem.

...or Spyderco could be using crappy screws. Either way, only one of these problems can be easily solved by you.
I'm sorry if I sound "fanboyish", but I'm really trying to help. :)
Between my Delica and Stretch, I've completely disassembled those knives more than 6 times, using blue thread-locker each time, and I've had zero problems.

Could you post a picture of the stripped screw-heads?

I have noticed this also. Another thing that I have run into with the super small torx screws is a smaller bit will engage a size larger screw head but loosely. If you feel any slop by gently rotating the bit (CW and CCW) in the screw head you may have the wrong bit. It must be hard to maintain tolarances on such small screw heads and bits.

I bought a Tenacious and a Persistence and on both 2 of the 3 clip screws stripped when I tried to remove them so in my opinion Spyderco has a screw quality control issue. I have bought several knifes of many different makes and have never had that issue so you can blame the bits or buyer if you want but I put the blame on Spyderco.

I had three stripped screws while changing the pocket clip position on both of my Tenacious knives. I've also had the same problem on my BM Pika and Kershaw RJ. I figured it was just a "Made in China" problem.

If you are willing to buy screws and don't want to wait, you might check E-bay. I recall seeing screws and such on there every now and then for Spyderco's more popular models. This is probably not the preferred solution, but it may yield a fix for you.

I'm sure they have you down, and may have already shipped them. Be patient for another week or so, and if they still have not shown send another email.
They will get you the screws. Best of luck, and maybe it won't be much longer.

I had the opposite feeling about dealing with Spyderco W&R last week. Charylnn was gracious and quite helpful. All I did was send her a courteous form email detailing my problem and politely asking for assistance in best enjoying their product. I needed a barrel screw, and it's in the mail now. Soft skills come in handy when expecting others to help you clean up a mess you've made, and accepting culpability for nullifying a warranty is the first step to getting treated well, not the last step.

I'm not saying that you're a bad person, dumb or anything like that. I'm suggesting that maybe you investigate your communication style a bit more to derive some of the implications of your actions and approaches to communication on others. It will help you out in future situations like this to understand the perspective on the other side of the phone/email. Starting a public rant about how terrible someone is at their job isn't always the best way to ask for assistance from that person, and if it is any indication of how the request for the screws went initially, I'm not surprised that there was a less-than-enthused response.

I've stripped a couple of screws before and Spyderco have always sent me a couple of new screws. The mail may take up to a month to arrive, but they do. The toughest type of screws to remove are the ones in the Military...
Recently i've stripped a screw out of a Chokwe because it was screwed in too tightly. I had to use a plier to hold the barrel spacers and applying alot of force before getting that screw out. I've damaged the spacer alittle and will ask Spyderco to send me one and i believe that they will.
Spyderco CS is one of the best for me. It's because of their wonderful CS that makes many people loyal to their brand.

Benchmade comes through when you need screws! No questions asked they will send you out a complete set of screws and a pocket clip at no charge, in a few days!! I recently had a problem with Craftsman torx drivers. They suck! The #6 Torx stripped very easily. I wasn't like crankin real hard on it either. The tool just failed IMO. We ll see how good their lifetime warranty is! If anyone knows of a good reliable brand of torx drivers please tell! Maybe Snap On? I ve had better luck with the Benchmade blue box bits that I have with the Craftsman.

I hate the fact that a big and great company like spyderco says that you will void the warrant if you take your knife apart, that is just like saying keep them in your safe and don't use them. They need to learn from Kershaw costumer service, free parts (including pocket clips for which Spyderco asks 10$), catalogs always get here on time with extras, I only received one from spyderco after sending them several emails after my order and two months later (never got the 2012 version even tho I have ordered it and sent them emails about it, getting the answer, we will ship it soon). Kershaw's arrived with extras in two weeks.

What you said is right. I have many sets of torx, not the husky like a lot of people say they have. I did identify that 2 sets of torx drivers I had which had the same size, were in reality different sizes. I even went to the hardware shop and checked to see if I was missing something. You know, I am not perfect and can make mistakes, so I like to check before getting upset.

I can't post a picture of the stripped screws since I drilled them out. the issue was, I got all but 1 (this happened on the same spot on 2 knives) screw out, the one that holds the pivot for the lockbar. I think this is possibly an issue with the torsion or stress put on the pivot from the spring or the bad screw, who knows. In any case, I was able to loosen it very slightly, so of course this created a little bit of play. If anyone has ever dealt with a stripped screw, you know that once it starts, it of course doesn't stop. So, I left it and emailed Spyderco.
