Spyderco Customer Service Disapointment

Europeanoutdoorsman......... Your fault that you used the wrong bit, your fault for being impatient, your fault for damaging your knife, your fault for voiding your warranty.

I read that and thought the exact same thing...

I dunno OP, seems like you had already decided to blame Spyderco when you started this thread.
I am probably making a mistake by assuming that my positive experience with my (2) Spyderco knives is the norm.

Either by working with Spyderco or finding your own route, I wish you good luck. :)
Keep us updated.

If anyone knows of a good reliable brand of torx drivers please tell! Maybe Snap On? I ve had better luck with the Benchmade blue box bits that I have with the Craftsman.

You're probably right to assume Snap-On.
For me, the set that fit best was Kobalt. YMMV.

Why some people who complain about this forum and its members but keep coming back for more is beyond me. Case in point, I dont like McDonalds so I dont go there. What is the point of calling people out for supporting Spyderco in a Spyderco forum? I am excited however as to what childish name Ill be called.

In case you forgot how to read...I didn't use the wrong bit, I am not impatient, I didn't damage the knife, and I don't care about the warranty. I just want Spyderco to stand behind their stuff and be able to provide a CUSTOMER with parts. I don't care if I have to pay for them, and I don't expect them to put the knife back together.

Nonsense all around. If that's what you wanted you could have had this resolved already and not posted a bitter thread about Spyderco W&R.

I don't think the original poster will not be satisfied until Sal flies to Europe, fixes his knife and buys him lunch.

Most folks put way too much torque on small screws, let me say it again, way too much torque on small screws. The problem is compounded when thread lock is used, especially if the person doing the dissemble does nothing to release the thread locking compound.

The following table is from here: http://www.wihatools.com/200seri/285recommend_Torq.htm

Maximum Recommended Torque For Wiha 285-SeriesTorque Blades
Size Style Maximum Torque
T5 TORX .5 Nm 4.4 in.lbs
T6 TORX .6 Nm 5.31 in.lbs
T7 TORX .9 Nm 7.9 in.lbs
T8 TORX 1.3 Nm 11.4 in.lbs
T9 TORX 2.5 Nm 22 in.lbs
T10 TORX 3.8 Nm 33.6 in.lbs
T15 TORX 5.5 Nm 48.7 in.lbs
T20 TORX 8.0 Nm 70.4 in.lbs
IP6 TORX Plus .5 Nm 4.4 in.lbs
IP6 TORX Plus .8 Nm 7.0 in.lbs
IP7 TORX Plus 1.3 Nm 11.4 in.lbs
IP8 TORX Plus 2.0 Nm 17.6 in.lbs
IP9 TORX Plus 2.5 Nm 22.1 in.lbs
IP10 TORX Plus 3.8 Nm 33.4 in.lbs
IP15 TORX Plus 5.5 Nm 48.4 in.lbs
IP20 TORX Plus 8.0 Nm 70.4 in.lbs
1.5 Slotted .15 Nm 1.3 in.lbs
2.0 Slotted .4 Nm 3.5 in.lbs
2.5 Slotted .4 Nm 3.5 in.lbs
3.0 Slotted .6 Nm 5.31 in.lbs
3.5 Slotted 1.1 Nm 9.6 in.lbs
4.0 Slotted 2.5 Nm 22.1 in.lbs
#000 Phillips .4 Nm 3.5 in.lbs
#00 Phillips .4 Nm 3.5 in.lbs
#0 Phillips .9 Nm 7.9 in.lbs
#1 Phillips 3.8 Nm 33.4 in.lbs
#2 Phillips 5.5 Nm 48.4 in.lbs

Recommended torque values differ depending on screw manufacturer, ALWAYS use the torque specified by the manufacturer.
Wiha does not endorse or certify any of the above torque values for screw they are intended only as a general guide line.
Never exceed the torque specified by the screw manufacturer.

Maximum Torque is similar to driving 120mph. Its Possible but mechanical failure will occur sooner

Yes, the OP is being impatient, but some of the inmature behavior in this thread suprises me.

I like Spyderco knives. I bought a green serrated Endura years ago in Dayton Ohio - the first of the brand I had ever seen, and it went on ten-day backpackers out west twice over twenty-three years ago.

I own fourteen Spyderco's and have had a problem only with the last - the puukko.

I have never taken a Spyderco folder apart - not because it would void the warranty but because I have never felt the need.

I strongly believe one should give a maker/seller/manufacturer a chance to handle a product problem directly instead of making a public complaint. I post this without judgment about how the OP has handled his issues.

I only contacted Spyderco once about a product problem, by PM to Sal, and have not received a response yet. It has been six weeks. I guess I need to try again.

Assume for the moment that Spyderco is operated by mere human beings, as has been noted. That would mean mistakes are made.

The impression that I get is that if you have anything negative to say about Spyderco, you are discouraged from bringing it to the Spyderco forum.

For those that do not totally preclude negatives about Spydecso, should they be posted instead in GBU? General?

I suppose the difference is some people have a negative experience and are willing to work toward a solution, while others simply want to yell and complain, offering only negativity and self-righteousness.

I've seen many volatile topics end peacefully when the OP genuinely wants to try and resolve the situation, and I've seen casual topics deteriorate into an emotional screaming match of blame and entitlement.

I'll admit, if I had a problem, I would not look forward to starting a non-positive thread in a manufacturer's forum, but if I post without animosity and entitlement and really want to help solve my problems, I don't foresee any thread explosions happening.
