Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

Did I get a fake Starmate?

My concerns are the uneven grind, the odd unfinished spot on the ricasso/choil and the fact that the lock side seems (to my eyes) to be bowed out when it's locked.

No that thing is too legit to quit. I can tell by the sheen of the blade that it is genuine vg-10 steel.

That's like the same thing I posted above! I wonder if it's from another seller. If these are just starting to be produced and someone gets one thinking they're genuine and are disappointed with the quality, they could get a bad impression of Spyderco.

Thanks GuyWithTheThings, stole the words right out of........

Damn con-artists or just ignorant sellers selling fakes on eBay. Either way, they must be stopped.

Look at the opening for the compression lock. It's not as shaped as a real one. Also, the jimping isn't as severely angled towards your thumb and the coating just doesn't seem right.
This is getting BAD! You have to have a very critical eye to spot these things now days.

I pulled mine out to inspect (my PM2 that is) and compare and you're right, the lock bar and jimping are both off. Jeez these guys are getting good! I'd have missed that.
Thanks for pointing that out.

Oh, and welcome to the forums elsorso!

People need to educate themselves before going out and buying. But then again, if someone is just now purchasing their first Spyderco, they might not know fakes exist...

I wouldn't be surprised if these guys buy a real PM2 and start making exact copies of it. Except they mightn't get better than they are now... it's tempting to get one just to beat on.

Oh, one more thing. The areas right around the screws and pocket clip holes seem almost neon or a moonglow/jade color. so if you're in the market for a PM2, make sure the jimping is angled, the lockbar cutout is right, and the scales are all continuous in color.

I note they even have authentic looking paperwork too. We have a thread going about Spyderco boxes being printed in China.

I have to wonder if those guys are printing the paperwork too, making it easier to sneak a copy out to their counterfeiting buddies?

Yes, the paperwork is being copied but the counterfeiters. However, the paper it's printed on doesn't feel like printer paper; it's thinner than that.
