spyderco???? good EDC??

If you are only spending $50 and want a good Spyderco, get the Endura.

+1 But eventually you're going to get more. It just happens. I think the paramilitary is the ultimate edc knife but it's a little up there in price. Get the Endura if you want an affordable quality folder or a Tenacious for a less expensive, less quality alternative.

Buy a lightly used Sage1 on the exchange. Or just save your money and wait and get a Sage 1. IMO the Sage knives are some of the best mid range production folders being made.

My vote is for the Tenacious. It has been pretty much my main carry blade for 6 months now. I have beat the crap out of it and it is still ticking.

Im new to this and I been watching alot of good reviews online about spyderco. Im considering getting one as my first EDC knife, I would like to hear your opinions on spyderco.
I think Spyderco makes great knives. Well made, well designed and first rate materials. Although there are other companies that are probably as good, I don't think anyone makes a better production knife than Spyderco. I have several in my own EDC rotation, including a Delica which is probably my favorite EDC knife.

Look at the Spydero Cat. It's small, about 2.2" blade length, but it's priced at 50 and you get superb steel. Other than that, the Endura, Delica are also fine choices.

If you want self defense, learn a martial art. Using a knife for self defense is a colossally bad idea unless you've been specifically trained to use one.

Honestly, not a personal attack towards you: But as a personal peeve, all these survivalist/knife forums where people say they need a knife for self defense, I think is pathetic. Learn to use your fists people. Besides, knives aren't much use against a bigger weapon like a stick, and you certainly don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

All that said, if you want a cheaper knife for self defense. Don't get a spyderco. They deploy slowly. A great, cheap EDC that can be had on amazon for around 20 bucks, is the Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) M16-10kz. It has a tanto point for stabbing, and a partially serrated edge for tearing flesh. Also, it features a carson flipper that deploys extremely quickly for a 50 state legal knife. After a few practices, and if your knife is adjusted and lubricated properly, it should open as fast as a switchblade. It's a quality, durable, very light knife for EDC. The only drawback is that while the locking mechanism is strong, it takes two hands to close the knife.

If you are looking for a quality knife that also deploys quick and you are willing to spend a bit more money, I would look at a benchmade knife that features the axis lock. It's a bit higher quality than spyderco overall in my opinion. Check out the mini griptilian, fantastic knife.

If you are set on spyderco, you won't be dissapointed. You can get a delica for around 40-50 bucks, and spyderco makes fantastic knives. I have a delica in my pocket right now in fact.

Good luck,

-Freq

Spyderco has some of the best, most useful designs in my opinion. If you're into them, I'd pick up one of those brand new flat-ground Delicas or Enduras.

I agree with this! The new flat ground blades should be excellent slicers & cutters or for what ever else my need them for!

Kershaw is better
look at the shallot its 3.5"

Dont choose a knife by the company almost all of the major ones that come up allot spyderco, kershaw, benchmade, CRKT etc will be good companies to buy from just find a knife you like

I would recommend a kershaw groove for a 3.5" blade. I have the tanto version and it fits my hand like a glove. however, due to the blade shape, not the best for utility purposes. The clip point groove is the same size and would make an excellent edc. it is hard to beat a delica or endura tho. also i would check out nononsenseselfdefense dot com and its knife articles before you carry a knife for self defense. knives are first and foremost cutting tools. good luck in your search for an edc!

Just chiming in that I too love my delica, and the delica wave has the added advantage of being really good for opening bottles.

I agree with some of the above posts, go with the endura. It's one of the best Spyderco models and the design has been around a long time. I've recommended it in the past (to my cousin) and he very happy with it.

NOTE: Beware, Spyderco's tend to multiply after you get your first.

My local store had the endura ad delica($59) , both feels very solid but the handle is a bit too thin for me. I think the g10 handle will work best. Prob will get a tenacious for $30 for now

Spydercos are weak. What you are looking for is this:

Strength, as in spear point, tanto, ~or~ a modified tanto as in the Wagner reality
based self defense folder or other robustly constructed knife, ... Spyderco is generally
no good in this aspect [flame suit: activated].

Sharpness, nuff said.

Grippiness, as in checkered / slotted G-10 or Micarta done correctly.

Speed, speed is life, so a waved knife is optimum. There are some members here
who are very adept at waving many kinds of knives. A Cold Steel ak-47 from ebay maybe
[the G-10 one] would fit all or almost all of what you said you wanted.

A knife with some mass to it is helpful, another area where Spyderco is 2nd rate.
[they are the most over-rated knife around, Benchmade and Kershaw are over-rated as well]

I understand you might not be able to afford what all I am talking about in a knife right away [and others have said] but bear it in mind for the future. Welcome to BF.
