Spyderco HAP40 Thread

Same here... I run all my Superblue and M4 (and many of the higher carbide steels) at low angles with a 15 deg micro, without durability issues.
When I had an M4 knife (Gayle Bradley) I was running it at 15 dps with impressive results so was wondering if it's a "disservice" to this steel to run it more obtuse than that.

Sharpmaker has 2 options?

My bad, I'm definitely the novice here, especially when it comes to the angles. Using the SM @ 30 exclusively didn't dawn on me. When I have used the 30 degree position, which is rare, I always follow it up on the 40 degree for my final edge. I didn't realize the shallower angle setting was this viable/popular.

I don't know if I want the Stretch, but the Dragonfly? Very much want. We'll see what the price comes to up here and if I want it as badly as I wanted my Delica.

My only HAP40 so far is the Delica. Still my newest folder, but I've been using it and I've really fallen in love with the design in general. The Delica is a wicked cutter. It's lightweight but doesn't feel cheap. The ergonomics offer excellent control of the edge and point. It rides really well in pocket and while I've always preferred larger folders, the Delica by contrast to others in its size feels very capable and dependable to me.

Very nice sharpening...that doesn't look like the factory edge. What did you take the angle to and what sharpening equipment did you use?

What did you use to get your 9 dps? Curious if you use the sharpmaker with one of the "techniques". Thx

A sharpmaker rod placed under the center of the SM. Do that on the 30 degree setting and see-saw back and forth and you will get 9-10 dps.

Curious why the 20 degree micro rather than 15?

I find it gives a more durable edge with no perceivable change in performance. It is also easier to get a really clean apex at 40. Just a few super light passes and you've got a hair whittling edge. The microbevel can barely be seen with a 10x loupe. Resharpening is also ridiculously easy. 3-4 passes and you are back to hair whittling. I have micro beveled at 30 and it is a little more of a "fussy" process and I am unable to note any difference in attainable sharpness or performance. This is just what I've found works best for me...I'm sure others get good results with a 30 degree mb.

I was going to ask why you are using the safety rod in your photos, but then I got to thinking about that thing see-sawing back and forth. Better safety rod than sorry :)

Very cool. Thanks for the response. Looking even more forward to the Stretch now. [emoji106]

Ha, I put the rod in for the photo if I remember correctly. I should really use it more often. I use them more now than I used to. They don't get in the way so there really is no reason not to use them. When you get truly proficient with this thing you can get going pretty fast when reprofiling.

When I am reprofiling I do not see or saw every stroke. I might do a ton on each side and switch back and forth that way until I am closer to apexing. It is more the speed that is the hazard for me.

Loving my HAP40 Delica, it's been riding shotgun in my right front pocket since I got it, about 3 weeks ago. I'm not going to pretend like I know anything about steels but this stuff is amazing. Holds an edge very well, only touched up once on the sharpmaker, with 3 weeks of moderate use. I work in the produce business so I am always cutting up fresh fruit for "quality control" purposes (and I get hungry) and hasn't developed any patina. Maybe one day I'll force a patina.

The Delica 4 was my first spydie and is what lead me down this rabbit...errrr spydie hole of addiction. I don't see anything kicking this out of my pocket anytime soon. Well, maybe a hap40 dragonfly!

Here's a pic I took when I first received it, set against the back drop of a...tissue box? Yes, the coolest tissue box I've ever come across...

Someday I'll have the muscle memory to go samurai on the Sharpmaker. Right now it only gets consistent if I use slow, steady strokes.

Great photo, Brian D!

The Dragonfly will be sweet. The Delica and Dragonfly are what started my Spyderco obsession.

Wow, I hadn't thought of propping up the SM under a rod at the center either. Even with my limited experience and technique, I've been very happy with the results I've gotten from the SM. I may try a shallower bevel on my HAP40 Stretch when it comes in just to tinker a bit.

I guess it isn't a factory edge anymore! :)

I used a Sharpmaker with just the standard fine rods at 15 DPS with a 20 DPS microbevel. Dunno how much this matters but I also honed it a good bit on a small steel. I'm actually far from good at sharpening (give me a stone and I'll ruin an edge with it, haha); I owe all my sharpening success to Sal.

Thanks! The last two times I called my sister to tell her where to get these, she was too late. So this time I just bought her one and called to congratulate her lol.
