Spyderco HAP40 Thread

I sharpen, I have the skill, I have the tools, I still hate sharpening S110V.

I'll take hap40 anytime.

Some argue what makes a great knife steel is the balance between how will a steel sharpens and holds an edge. Hap40

Some don't care about ease of Sharpening and what the wear resistance jacked up to its highest potential.
These people either don't sharpen there own knives or have the right abrasives and skill to get the job done. S110v

Which one are you?

The latter for sure

And that's why they make chocolate and vanilla! :D I like it that they are offering steels like s110v. I like it even more though that they are managing to do it while still offering steels like hap40 that are more to my taste.

@ElBee what angle did you go with?

Since Spyderco usually puts such good secondary bevels on their blades, sometimes even <15 dps, I just find myself touching up with the Sharpmaker at 20 degrees which gives an almost nonexistent microbevel, and feel like it'd take a couple years or more at the rate I touch up before I have to grind the shoulders back.

I put a 15 degree edge on it. Even got the Angle Cube out to dial it in since I wanted to do it right It's a serious slicer, and I love the steel

Both my HAP40 Delica and Endura have the best fit and finish of any FRN Spyderco I've handled previously. Zero blade play in any direction. Smooth opening and centered blades. The lamination lines are not perfect, but they are pretty good. I think I just got lucky.

Ok.... Now that the honeymoon period is over, I am thinking of taking the edge down to 10 dps and micro it at 15.

Has anyone noticed any chipping on factory edge? I didn't find any on my so far, not sure how thinner edge will hold up

Mine came from the factory at 10 dps. I have reprofiled once and kept it at 9-10 dps. I have had no chipping issues. I do, however, use a 40 degree microbevel rather than 30.

I've run S90V at 9-10 degrees per side with a 15 degree microbevel with no issues, you should have no issues running HAP 40 that acute. Actually, my Manix 2 in S90V was 10 degrees per side from the factory. I think many people are too accustomed to hearing they need to run 20 degrees per side edges that they really limit their cutting performance by not going more acute. After I use my HAP 40 Stretch I plan to run mine at 7 per side with a 15 per side microbevel to compare it to my ZDP/CF Stretch. I highly doubt I'll run into any issues with those angle for light and medium cutting assuming the heat treat is good, and it would be highly unlikely to get one with a bad heat treat.

I agree. The fit and finish on both my Delica and Stretch are superb. Perfect centering that does not wander like others I've had and very smooth. Perfect lamination lines on my Delica and near perfect on my Stretch I was fortunate to both hand pick. They're a mixed bag though. The first Stretch I got that I still need to sell has lines on one side that run almost into the secondary bevel.

My factory Stretch edge is so good, I've just been stropping it to maintain so far. I've been debating whether I just want to touch it up with a 20 degree microbevel or go with a full-on sharpening at 30 inclusive. The Sharpmaker is easier, but I'm leaning towards 30 inclusive so I can compare it to the GB I used to have. Still debating at what point I would want to stop on the stones. I've ran my S30V PM2 and M4 GB at 30 inclusive in the past with results I can't complain about so I think HAP40 will be fine.

Lamination lines are not so great on the three Hap40 Delica's I've gotten. Compared to my Superblues its night and day .Awaiting my Hap 40 Stretch this week and DFly when it drops hopefully there better.

On my Delica, I've proceeded exactly this way. Stropping initially kept the edge nearly perfect and now I've just started gentle touch ups on the 40 deg Sharpmaker slots. So far so good.

I've carried my Delica everyday for the last month and I don't think i've even looked at the lamination line. Oh, don't get me wrong....my ocd can act up over other stuff, (like blade play) but the line on the blade? Meh, they all cut the same. ;)

---of course now i'm going to have to go look at mine.
