Spyderco HAP40 Thread

I've carried my Delica everyday for the last month and I don't think i've even looked at the lamination line. Oh, don't get me wrong....my ocd can act up over other stuff, (like blade play) but the line on the blade? Meh, they all cut the same. ;)

---of course now i'm going to have to go look at mine.
I'm the exact same. Never cared about the line. Has no functional difference, that's why.

Now where's that Dragonfly!?

the Stretch HAP40 vying for pocket time

I was surprised how thin I keep the edge on my Cara Cara in comparison to this new contender

I prefer the handle and deeper choil on the Cara Cara and think it is the best EDC I've found for my needs, but my ego wants something that says "I'm a knife nut" in my pocket. I think the HAP40 Stretch is a close 2nd on the ergo's and am looking forward to carrying it for a long time.

Hi Rooster, it looks the opposite to me. Looks like the Cara Cara is thicker (sharpened at a significantly more obtuse angle) to me. Or when you say "thin" do you mean the width of the visible edge bevel?

BTW, I too have found the choil on the Stretch to be not quite deep enough for my taste. That was one of the things that changed on the new Stretch 2. Mine is arriving today and it will be the first time I will actually have a chance to carry and use this model. I am determined to give it a fair chance and plenty of carry time. We shall see. :)

Hmmm? it "feels" thinner behind the edge which I guess is close to 30 deg. inclusive. I have attempted to thin the edge over time to a full flat (probably with a inevitable small convex, with a thin bevel edge).

I intend to pose the question in the maintenance section on how to get a manufactures edge as I'm curious how they get that toothy edge and have a bur free finished apex after playing with this Stretch. I debur on a paper wheel or a 1x30 leather belt and inevitably end up with a polished edge (perhaps a lighter touch is needed?). My polish edges cut paper and shave better that these factory edges, but these factory edges (like on my stretch) feel so sharp when giving them a three finger touch and I'd like to know how to achieve such an edge.

BTW, I love looking through your fishing photo's from time to time. Life looks good!

I agree with you, Rooster. I've wanted to know how to recreate the Spyderco factory edge for awhile. I can do the hair whittling, parlor trick polished edges too, but the Spydie factory edge has got to be my favorite. I'm definitely someone who uses their edge as long as possible before sharpening.

You'll want to check out the thread in Maintenance then - http://http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1369755-how-to-achieve-factory-like-edge?p=15779659#post15779659

Gotcha. I might have misunderstood what you were saying. :)

I believe Spyderco sharpens on a fairly coarse belt and then power strops the edge. (Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.) You can do the same thing at home wth diamond stones and a strop. I like the finish I get off of the corners of the medium rods with a VERY light touch. Still screaming sharpen but with lots of bite.

Lance,

Thank you for being an enabler:D
I agree the recently released Seki FRN F & F is great. My new E4 SG VG10 is also screaming sharp unlike my older one. The HAP 40 also arrived face dry shave nicely. Haven't check its dps though

I am really impressed with my hap40 delica. I was using a super blue before it, and I decided to swap the scales because I like the dull gray so much. I work farmers markets on weekends, so I use my knives hard for cutting boxes, commercial plastic wrap, sampling tomatoes, melons, cutting broccoli straps, fennel tops, etc. The hap40 really holds its edge and can still push cut paper after light stropping and doing a few markets. The super blue on the other hand, needs more maintenance but sharpens up really easily like butter. I haven't had to sharpen the hap40 yet.

Update after about a months worth of daily use (restaraunt work, cutting produce bags and normal EDC work). I gave it about 10 strokes (5ea side) on the SM medium stones to take out a couple micro chips a week after use and I havent had to touch it since. It still slices paper like a hot knife through butter. This steel is amazing.
