I didn't know they got paid every time a hole was put in a blade, thats pretty interesting. I wonder if they still get paid for things like that?

Interesting that it says that clips and serrations were not protectable, as I'm pretty sure the clip on their Voyagers was the only thing that Cold Steel was paying royalties for at that time (CS knives with opening holes and their version of the Axis lock came later I believe).

And from a BF post I found by Sal in 2003:

"I might also add that Cold Steel was the only company that elected to pay Royalties to Spyderco on our clothing clip. Most companies just "borrowed" it without so much as a "thank you". (Al Mar had asked permission)."

I still have my Voyager!
...And the clip is broken.

That was a definite downside of that design. There is an eBay seller that has replacement handles for the 29LT, which is the 4" Tanto version, so if that's the one you have could give it a try.

No, I have the 3" plain edge clip point blade.
I also have the 4" serrated edge and the pocket clip on that one is still all intact!

I guess the key word in Sal's post is "elected". So I'm thinking they couldn't legally make anybody pay to use the pocket clip but cold steel stepped up and payed anyway.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I can’t imagine carrying a folder everyday without a pocket clip. It seems like Spyderco really changed how people can carry and use knives, for the better! ( I know the buck 110 is legendary, and I love it, but a clip is so much more practical.) And they are still pushing the envelope so to speak as far as new and different steels are concerned...think maxamet, Rex 45, CruWear, 51200, etc. I think it’s great what they’re doing for the knife community as a whole.
And before anyone calls me a Spyderco fanboy, I only own 3 of them and about 30+ ZTs. I love em, but I wish ZT would push the envelope like Spyderco has been doing all these years. I know they have the capabilities.

Why title it "Spyderco Honors Benchmade" - they are (were) thanking everyone who pays (paid) a licensing fee IN 1997!

Lots more people since then pay those fees. Still do.

Seems a little click bait.
