Spyderco knife used on poster in the UK.

SNIP

I do my bit to educate "at risk" children (the ones who might just give you a beating when you come out of the chip shop with your girlfriend). WTF do you lot do but moan and bicker about stuff that goes on in other people's countries.

I was a public school teacher for 14 years. I saw my share of tough kids as well. I'm not naive enough not to know that any one of them could have killed me with a pencil if they had wanted. It's the behavior, not the tool. At least here we are still allowed the means to protect ourselves from them when we're leaving the chip shop (if we actually had chip shops here).

Trying to wrap yourself in nobility because you work with kids doesn't work on me. I've spent most of my adult life in education, some of it with 'disadvantaged' kids. What of it? This isn't a pissing match about who is the better person.

You can obviously for the most part carry what ever you want in the UK. It's only if the police actually stop
you (for a reason that warrants a search) you will have problems if you're carrying an "illegal" knife.

It would seem some people are under the impression we all have a personal police
officer that keeps tabs on us at all times :p................well, not yet any way :(

I think you took that comment the wrong way, I didn't think of it as a "my country is better than yours", indeed far from it, the opposite I was thinking.

I think Americans have a rather quaint idea that because Britain isn't armed, then there's no violence here. There are some very rough and dangerous people here. Hence my suggestion to leave your guns behind and to come and do a tour of British cities, visiting the worst council estates in each one.

Perhaps some of you might get an idea what's going on.

In fact, the next time any of you are in the UK why not visit Merseyside on a Friday and Saturday night, I recommend the Toxteth area especially.

That poster doesn't in anyway make any knife law changes. Things are still the same, EDC and "reason" to carry non EDC.

Rather, it's aimed at a local community where street violence and weapon carry happens. It offers protection to witnesses of street violence, asking them to come forward and name the perpetrators (who obviously live in the local area).

As Haze says you can carry what you want until you get searched.

One would think that inner-city youths (who are known to the police) get stop and searched fairly regularly (for drugs and weapons).

I've never been stop and searched, neither has anyone I've known.

So what happens to you if you happen to be stopped with an illegal knife? Would you expect to be jailed or fined, or do they just confiscate it?

So what is it a pissing match about?

A poster in Merseyside (significant information that all of you missed).

I gave my response to that and then had to explain my own personal thoughts and position.

I singled none of you out, unlike you and others have done of me.

So back to Spyderco, in English law is it possible for them to sue on this issue?

An illegal knife would be a balisong or automatic.

They would confiscate it and the matter would go to court (as would happen if you had a non EDC, or an axe, bill hook etc.. without a "justifiable" reason).

I haven't read the entire thread yet, so please forgive me if this has been mentioned already. Does anyone seriously think the type of knife pictured would matter? Hell, i think it could've been a Swiss Army Classic and still have the same general reaction. Remember, those who are anti-knife rarely have a logical reason for their ideals. Irrational thoughts cannot be swayed very easily. This poster is just another sad, sad indicator of that fact.

You could pretty much expect to have it confiscated and get a fine, if you're
known to police or have previous then you can expect a bit more trouble. *

If your not known to the police you could even get away with it all together if you're
lucky, depending on the situation you're in and the police officers dealing with you.

(* illegal would be a locking folder or fixed blade with out a reason for carrying it)

What an absurd and ridiculously ignorant and innacurrate statement.

sure, cause we can't access news and statistics. awesome blanket statement

Agreed...

Perfect answer!

You can access news like the bogus UK scout knife ban, spread it all over forums like these and wail away to your hearts content about "what the UK has come to".

Or you can post local police posters and then make assumptions on the whole of the UK being knife draconian for every member of society.

It seems it's not just me who makes blanket statements here. :)

The interesting thing about this thread is that whoever picked the photo of the knife for the poster edited out the makers name and other details. When actually the hole on the blade is a trademark and identifies the knife as a Spyderco.

So.... under English law could Spyderco sue?

Can't access the UK trademark search at the moment... So, does Spyderco have that trademark in the UK?

Didn't I asked why carry knives with you all day ( " EDC " ).You can " defend " yourself with knife, you don't need knife for fast food, you can't hunt on the streets ( but it's good idea ). Yes, knives are not killers, they are " weapon of crime " if someone got hurt. Knives like Benchmade Dejavoo can make it easier to cut or stab someone if attacks you. Still, you are that who doing crime.
Dejavoo is for military and police, or hunters and outdoor enthusiasts ( like myself ), not " EDC ". In my country you can't carry knife on the public place ( street is all so public place ). I didn't mentioned Dejavoo with no reason - this knife one of most dangerous folding knives of all times, of course if is in wrong hands. On this knife line of tip goes right in the middle line of grip - pure dagger. Lock is weak? Just try it! Blade has maximum length for this size. If you are policemen who stab this knife in bag in search for drug - OK, but if you attacked and frightened this knife can do such carnage to a man all most like fixed combat blade. In split of second turn you in to killer. Such knives don't belong to a public places. I think policemen on streets shouldn't carry such knives, not to mention regular people ( " RG " )!

I don't know but all UK shops selling Spydercos refer to the hole as a "trademark".

Would Spyderco even want to sue? Would it be worth it?

If you had a child and you found his pic photo shopped on a "get tough on crime" poster that made him look like a thug you wouldnt be mad?

That's a different scenario because it's a knife in the picture, not a child (do you seriously expect me to answer your question?:D).

Have you read the britishblades link and what Sal had to say on the matter?

Im still in shcool (Ky, USA) and because of my attitude my teachers have no problem with me carrying a blade, I have had my teachers ask me for my knife before, Ive had them ask me for my light (I edc a flashlight) but you know what, Ive gotten in trouble for the light but NEVER for my benchmade. Its all about the person carrying and their attitude about it

BTW I carry a 6150... yea an auto

I wouldn't be doing my civic duty if I didn't remind you that carrying an auto in a K-12 school in this state EVEN WITH A CCW is a criminal act.

By school I assume you don't mean college. My sense is that you've been very lucky you haven't been hauled off to jail. If I were you I think I would invest in a manual opener to carry at school.

Just some friendly advice.

I got the impression you thought your opinion was more informed than mine by virtue of the fact you work with tough kids. I thought that was why you interjected your work with kids into the discussion. If that was not your reason for detailing your background then I apologize.

But I still think you're wrong. And I still don't know if Sal can sue.:D

Yikes...

Has there been a slew of knife related assaults with $100+ knives that I am unaware of?

Unsavory criminals getting a taste for high quality folders?

Clearly people should not be allowed to carry them. After all, they "don't belong in a public place."

How about you punish the actual people who commit crimes?
