I have a question for all the Spyderco fans and owners, how is their knife quality?????
The reason I ask, is about 15 years ago I bought one of their folders as my EDC/ work knife. I litteraly hated that knife
the quality was horrable, I could not get it to hold an edge, and after using it for several weeks I finally just through it away.
Since then i have had Kershaw, Leatherman , Case, and others . Currently I carry a benchmade.
The Question I have are there knives better know??????????????
I had a chance to Take a look at a Southard last week and it seemed to be a well built knife.
Have they always been good and I just got a junk one, or have they improved over the years?
Looking forward to some seasoned reviews, thanks

I don't know if spyderco knives were being faked 15 yrs ago, but maybe you got a fake. Do you remember the blade steel? I've owned several spydercos and have never had any issues regarding quality.

You may have just gotten a lemon, I own 3 and have handled many more and they are fantastic. Maybe I've really lucked out but all 3 of mine have fantastic fit and finish, especially for the price. I also had the opportunity to handle a Southard this weekend and I am lusting over that knife.

Like any other brand...some suck and some are great...what I think sucks might be the best another has ever owned.

I have always been a fan of the Police and Military.

Spyderco is the only brand i collect. Since ive started buying them their quality in my opionion is top notch. I have no complaints with any of the spydercos i own. All the way from the cheaper lower end to the higher end knives they are all great in my opinion. The native 5, sage 3, pm2 and manix 2 are my favorites and if you are thinking of giving them another shot i would look into one of those they are great in every aspect in my eyes.

To the best of my knowledge Spyderco has always made quality knives. I bought my first one about 15 years ago as well (a combo edge Delica) and I cannot fault it. I wonder if you managed to get a fake one? Alternately I know they used softer steel like AUS6 on some knives - my Meerkat was in AUS6 but I'm no expert in Spyderco build history so couldn't tell you what else it was used in. Even so, their AUS6 took and held a pretty decent edge - certainly nothing to complain about.

To answer the question though - Spyderco are a very highly regarded brand and make an excellent product.

You may have had a bad experience. I did not own spyderco until a year ago. But, they have a forever customer in me, based on quality, price point, comfort and real world EDU ing.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

15 years ago Spyderco almost closed up shop in big part because of counterfeits flooding the market so it is a possibility.

I love spyderco! Not sure about the southard though. People seem to love it, but the price for a knife made outside the us is a lot. Pretty much anything made in golden is really good. I have a wave endura that is really good to though.

I have more spydercos than anything else and all I have to say is that they have very good, consistent quality. I have had a couple small issues with some like slightly off centered blades and whatnot but never a bad knife from spyderco. There are many reasons why they are so popular so dont hesitate to give them another chance.

I'm not sure what steels they were using back then or what exactly you were using the knife for or if it was an authentic Spydie or not but your experience sounds abnormal.

Most people here are either fans of Spyderco or at least recognize they make a quality product. So, you either got a fake, were expecting more than is reasonable of a pocket knife or you just found a knife that doesn't suit your needs.

My problem is I have Sage taste and a Byrd budget. Don't get me wrong, I like most of their lineup, but quality varies across their options

The one I got to handle over the weekend was every bit as good as the sprint run Manix 2 I had in my pocket. The flipper action was buttery smooth and the lock up was perfect. I couldn't find anything wrong with that knife.

You threw the knife away?! I don't have enough info. here to comment on the edge retention nor the quality, but do you remember which model it was? Which steel it had?

If you buy another one and experience these same issues, please don't throw it away. Send it to me!

Go to the Spyderco sub forum and use the search function.

There are reviews all over the place. Not hard to find.

Spyderco is probably one of the best, if not the best in consistant quality, in all of its products (cheapest of the cheap, to the expensive ones), and in customer service.

Im more of a benchmade fan personally, but ive never even read anything negative about Spyderco.

You bought a fake, or some crap knife you incorrectly remember to be a Spyderco. I'm sure the odd knife slips out of their factories with QC issues once in a blue moon, but seriously purchase with confidence. Depending on the factory and model you're either getting a solid, well-made knife or a really solid, incredibly well-made knife.
